I really enjoy Emmanuel. Seagull does a good job - he's got great breadth, and that leads him to sensible guesses when needed. Mostly, he makes sure he and his team are having a good time, and together they have a knowledge spread that's very UC-friendly.
This was not a good match, Venkatesh not as on the ball as he was on the previous rounds. Although I do think Emma have the most likeable team and I am happy for them.
14:22 Mahler is only “Austrian” in a purely technical sense. He was born and raised in Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic), which was then a part of the Austrian Empire, then Austria-Hungary. More accurate to refer to him as Czech rather than Austrian in today’s usage.
You make it seem like such a clear matter, but let me quote Mahler himself on this question: “I am thrice homeless: as a Bohemian in Austria, as an Austrian among the Germans, and as a Jew everywhere.” As you may see, Mahler wasn’t as sure as you are. And Czech, a name and nationality existing at the time, doesn’t appear in Mahler’s self-designation at all.
Well done to Emmanuel, but for a team with 2 maths and 1 physics specialists, they really bombed the fairly easy maths bonus early on. If 12 is abundant, then any multiple of 12 is abundant also (at the very least it could be easily deduced that twice 12 is abundant), so I don't know why they quickly abandoned 24. The history guy was the only one who expressed any hesitation at jumping all the way out to 60. And then on the next part the maths girl so confidently stated that 9 and 10 were coprime with 12.
Stinkers of questions! Still picking Emmanuel for the finals, but I just don't think they can go all the way. Having said that, I stand ready to eat my hat when they win convincingly...
It`s wonderful to be able to keep up with these thousands of miles from home. Thanks for uploading them. The only thing is, it appears to be in some weird format. Opera, at least by default, can`t cope, unlike with the vast majority of You Tube videos and I watch I have to revert to Big Brother Google`s Chrome. What`s going on here (and why not use something more standard)?
He often appears like he is guessing. He brainstorms a few possibilities, then gives the most likely answer. I really can't tell how what he really knows.
I was skeptical of his approach at first, but he won me over here. Having one member think through options may be good tactics, provided the others are able to multitask and use his 'monologue' to exclude or confirm options (and of course, provided they're given enough time to respond and he does it only when he thinks he's in a relatively good epistemic position). I'd find it difficult, but like the alertness that comes with it. And hey...statistics are on their side.
+ITubaUTuba Your username brings to mind ‘Tuba or not Tuba’ by Pamphlet (that’s a pro-tuba organization I founded that distributes various leaflets; our acronym stands for ‘Provisional Advice for Musical People too Hesitant or Lethargic to Enter Tubahood’). A recent release of ours was ‘Tuba or Trump - one or the other, please’, which became a hit with the Chinese. And next we’re planning a composition competition entitled ‘Me, myself, and I + mini-me: Concerto for Trump, trombone, triangle, and mini-tuba’, for which I’ve imported a custom-built one-valve tuba for small hands from the village of Höfen in Tirschenreuth in eastern Bavaria. Thanks for reading.
Can anyone explain why the answer to the question as 21:18 is not Greenland but Germany instead? Greenland is a country with a land area of more than 2 million km^2 while the answer given is Germany with a land area of only 300K km^2... Am I missing something from the question or is the question wrong?
I liked Emma until now but now I just want them to get beaten as quickly as possible. Please, what got over Seagull? I really want Corpus Christi to win the next few rounds (as long as they don't beat Balliol :p) - Venkatesh's awesome.
I find something extremely unpleasant about Geoffrey Paxman but I cant put my finger on what it is but the man makes my skin creep. Perhaps it his smoldering below-the-surface arrogance
I also dislike seagull's nasty cockyness and excesively long deliberate time wasting. Although the rest of the team is quite likable and smart, maybe enough to win. I don't have a favorite team but my favorite participants are Barton-singer, Rudd, Venkatesh and Monkman. They would certainly be the dream team.
Felipe Suárez Colmenares Well, the geography questions were such that they easily take a lot of time making sure it's correct even without the time play aspect. Not saying that happened but I'm pretty sure it would've been a bit slower hor any team.
IMHO Seagull is exceptionally bright and he is wearing what appears to be a rugby shirt. Good lad in my book. He is a "What You See Is What You Get" or WYSIWYG type, utterly devoid of bullpoo. Given your first sentence I'm not sure you would qualify.
