wow! another incredible performance from st john's. mckeown and devine-stoneman are two of the best contestants i've ever seen on this show, and i've been watching since i was ten years old and my dad would give me 5p for every answer i got right.
Nice comment, W H - you had a fabulous start (often the way to appreciating the intrinsic value of something starts with its instrumentality, it seems). What a truly brilliant team. Of course, Midgley, Foot, Murdoch are all well known internationally (as is Anscombe), but I suppose that would be considered highly specialised knowledge to students at that new university in East Anglia ;)
Every member of the St Johns team had a hand in their win. Over all the years I've watched University Challenge, and it's been many years, they are the most complete team I've ever seen. If they don't win this series, I'll be absolutely flabbergasted.
No doubt about how good St Johns were! But Edinburgh was the nicest team in the whole contest and did extremely well I thought - great attitude and good sports throughout!
McKeown absolutely on fire on this one, with THE DEVINE STONEMAN being slightly overshadowed (he did pull some impressive ones towards the end). Nothing much Edinburgh could do, no shame in losing to these monsters. Merton's are the favourites for the other final, but it will be harder than this one. Twelve right answers for me.
Feeling pleased with myself - I scored 18 correct answers. However, I confess I paused my sky-plus for approx 5-7 seconds after each question as I just cant think as quickly as them.
The Gertrude Stein picture round was, methinks, a bit too easy at this stage, especially since the picture of Picasso was of him much older than he was when he frequented the fat lady's salon.
And Brubeck was a pupil of Schoenberg? I thought I knew a lot about the man, but that last music question flipped me! You learn something new every day....
Nicholas Farrington Correct. I always knew Brubeck was influenced by Shoenberg - he spoke of him often in interviews - but I wasn't aware he actually took tuition from him.
Every time I watch this, when they say "Asking the Questions " I still think "Bamber Gascoigne" just before they say Jeremy Paxman lol...showing my age.
John's were just superb. I love how you can see McKeown's ears prick up when she latches onto some fact in the question and thinks 'aha'. McKeown is my knowledge goddess for this year - but she is an unreachable goddess, unknowable and distant. We look to her prophets Levin and Devine-Stoneman, and hope she is kind, for I imagine her wrath is great (probably not as much as Woodland tho)
jonathan coalecanth Oh I imagine she is kind. Because unless she's Raoul Silva from Skyfall, you can't really take someone with a lisp seriously if they don't mean well. In my opinion.
I agree but I think if you were in her bad books you'd know about it. The John's team are, put simply, adorable. Newcastle and Merton, I like and enjoy but they don't have the cult factor. McKeown and co for the win!!
Of the John's team, I only find McKeown adorable because of that lisp, which just makes it hard to take her seriously if she was, as you say, an enraged goddess. You would know that you were in her bad books if she were a normal person, however.
The full title is Nocturnes : Five stories of music and nightfalls. The question asked was the word that linked ...the correct answer was therefore ' nocturne '
Sandroid Pity that Brainiac faces Newcastle next week because Stone kneeled before him before and she could have done it again. Metaphorically, of course.
Adam Walker Guess u cant take a hint so Ill spell it out. Good riddance as she didn't deserve to be on UC much less the semis. Edinburgh paid the price. End of... move on... and think about the remaining very smart, attractive, deserving females :P
Sandroid That's ironic considering you hated Woodland, the first time Merton were on. And it's also ironic that you claim that University Challenge IS NOT A FASHION CONTEST! IT'S AN INTELLECTUAL CONTEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but look at your comments regarding Mr. Wiberg... But at the same time, my punctuated comment was meant to be read in the 300 style and if you thought I was mad at you for hating Stone, you're a bigger fool than you make her out to be.
