For anyone trashing Corpus Christi, Joseph Krol went on to captain a combined Cambridge team to victory against Oxford last year, and then again earlier this year in the British Student Quiz Championships. Obviously no-one is going to read this on a two year old clip of University Challenge, but just for posterity, they weren't quite as bad as people here are making out!
I've just read your comment and agree with you. Corpus Christi were not bad, but it is a brutal game. If you miss buzzing in by a split second the other team have probably got ten points. You are then shut out of the game for minutes while they add a potential fifteen points. You only have to experience that cycle a few times to be well adrift. And in this case the opposition were generally faster, that is how it is won and lost.
Krol is one of the best buzzer players about, and these were the opponents we were dreading the most. The second round is brutal and Corpus should have got a lot further this series.
Seemed to me that Corpus Christi consistently got questions that were esoteric as compared to those their opponents got: a fluke, of course. Pretty sure they could've answered a good many of their opponents' winning questions but were just not fast enough on the buzzer.
Think he was merely pleased, really, since the poem is as famous as 'The Waste Land', meaning anyone studying literature will be familiar with it. The same goes for the following excerpts.
McKeown and Devine-Stoneman were great! Roberts seemed to be the only one awake in the Corpus Christi team. Looking forward to seeing St John's in their next match!
Thanks for the speedy upload psimanjuntak! What a great game! I would be willing to bet that one of these teams wins the trophy. Impressive performance!
Welcome to our planet, visitor! You'll find that most of us humans make jokes and light-hearted comments about inconsequential things, so try to keep that in mind; it'll make it easier for you to blend in with the natives! :P
Along with everybody else, I'll say St Johns for the final. I'd love to say the champions right now, but stranger things have happened. McKeown did a lot of the work here, but they're all very smart cookies. Also, I think I'm developing a crush on the aforementioned person... Sigh....
I reckon the DVNSTMN was enough alone to make them semi-final material, but with this episode clearly showing McKeown's prowess at anything literary, I reckon they are now the most likely team to win. The number of genuinely hard questions she aced was really impressive.
Pax: - "What language..." Devine-Stoneman: - "Don Carlos?" Pax: - "No, it was French" XD The show brought it upon themselves though for writing such a long question... the begining of it tends to be forgotten. XD
- "Go for it" Roberts is wearing a "In space no one can hear you insist that there are only two genders shirt" which is kinda stupid since in space, no one can hear insist that there aren't just two either. Just wear a gay pride flag shirt next time. - RIP Corpus Christi, no shame in losing to the eventual champions. - You know it's a proper quiz team when they know semi-obscure chess terms and poets and their collections, but not cricketing terms or a Romanian deadlift.
Way to drag an irrelevant political point into the game Roberts... McKeown was on amazing form, without her St John's wouldn't have scored half the points they did.
I couldn't agree more. He had a similar shirt the other time around (something with pronouns). I must say I'm very happy for st. John's though, they were my favourites after the first round. McKeown was simply outstanding.
Thanks Psi! Brilliant thumbnail aptly describes Krols WTF frustration as he drops from 9 starters in R1 to just scraping in at the end with one! Sad to see him go. Maybe the aim is to have females in this final after all :) 'Game' tailored to showcase the two Mc-Keown-Dougall's obvious knowledge of classics tho wondering where the latter's head was ... as the former snapped up 5 classics starters: Katherine Parr, TS Eliot, habanera, Elizabeth and 1930's. Then of course there were the 4 bonuses on Handmaid's Tale, poetry, SP plays & Norwegian writers! A grand total of 110 points up for grabs. A full 25 points on Argenteuil last season AND Olympia, screwed up both. Moral of the story: watch my Art compilation :) Good on Roberts for his 5 starters but not a fan of his tee ... use another platform pleez.
ALL HAIL the Devine Stoneman and, especially, Queen McKeown!!! Not to brag (or maybe yes), but I somehow had a premonition about this, see my comment on S47E13: "Krol, as good as he is, just comes across as a complete wanker to me... Hope the Divine Stoneman will punish him. Many easy questions tonight, I thought, got 21." I was delighted to see one of the most annoying teams ever get annihilated. Krol lost his swagger and sip-tic really quickly. Roberts with yet another t-shirt no-one older than 18 would find funny (regardless of the message, with which I'd agree) and McDougall eternally sounding like someone who's doing you a huge favour by opening his mouth to talk. Glad I won't be seeing them again. thanks for the upload, as usual.
Uncle Roger I suppose it doesn't help that Roberts looks like this years Bath. If you cut his hair, shaved his beard a bit and he was from West Yorkshire instead of Buckinghamshire. Why he even came from Buckinghamshire, I have no idea.

Sandra, if my results are anything to go by, I reckon Corpus Christi might have looked much better than they actually were in their first episode (S47E13) because said episode might have had easier questions (I myself got 21 right on that and I usually get around a dozen).
Paxo may want to, but can't really say to an obviously smart team that loses badly: 'Well guys, none of you has the right plumbing we want in the final to shut our critics up about more women on the show. At least meet us halfway by having a trans on the team next time.' :)
Sandra27HK Last year, they did just that because a trans got to the quarter finals. But the BBC turned to Warwick and told them (though obviously not to their face): "You have outlived your usefulness." then turned to Wolfson and said "They must be eliminated! We need an all male Oxbridge final fast."
