Absolute carry-job from Broadbent at times there! Open are a very likeable team and unfortunate not to make it through the first time. Thanks as always, Pumpkin 🎃😁 A very appropriate username given the time of year!
Such a shame Oxford Brookes couldn't make it! I was really rooting for them as the underdog in the overall competition, although props to Open University for really improving their performance since last time. Really surprising. I really thought it was going to go the other way.
Wow Open absolutely smashed that. I always enjoy rooting for them since they are often a more diverse group of majors and ages but typically their performance is middling but this years team has some serious chops.
I found 20 pairs of states that have a last-two/first-two connection, and only the three they gave border each other. Next closest is Wisconsin and Indiana; they both border Illinois and Michigan but not each other. In the pairings, there's a string of 5 (Alabama, Maine, New Mexico, Connecticut, Utah), but no infinite loops.
Exciting match! Great work by G and D in the Open team...good knowledge. Oxford Brookes a bit lethargic except for Broadbent...liked his personality a lot! Thanks for this eagerly awaited weekly video😀
Incredible performance by the right half of the winning team, with good support. Does feel like the questions fell right for them... felt like lots of film and arts stuff. We'll see going forward if that feeling is mistaken. They certainly could contend.
What a great way to close out the first round :) - that's our sixth game of the year with an aggregate of 400+. Strangely Oxford Brookes answered as many starters as their first game - their bonus rate wasn't quite as good as last time though. Warwick vs Trinity next week to begin what looks like a fiery bloodbath of a second round ❤🔥 - the way scores have fallen it will be far from the first stacked game we'll see over the next few weeks 😍.
A complete shocking performance from Brookes I would say after being the highest scoring loser in the 1st round. But Broadbent did exceptionally well and almost carried the team. They were looking for a comeback but my gid what a performance from Davidson! He was so quick on the buzzer and was knowledgeable on the bonuses as well. The Captain of Open University is amazing as well and listens to her team very well. Hoped that Brookes would be in the semis after their performance in the 1st round but Open changed that.
Agreed! When I ehar "Edinburgh Festival" I think of the International Festival, which was Edinburgh's first festival and is the high-brow counterpoint to the Festival Fringe.
Pumpkin, thanks for posting these shows! This episode S53E16 is missing from the playlist for the series and is a bit difficult to find. You might want to add it.
Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! Once again, I played my pre-match game of picking who I thought would win, and once again, I was wrong. So, so wrong. This was a runaway, and I'm still scratching my head over the winning team's previous match loss. Were their opponents just that good? Or did they just improve from first to second match? With the right set of questions, this team can beat any other. The losing team never had a chance in this, and they were a very likeable team. My best to each team, and to each individual.
Thanks again CosmicPumpkin. I think I'm only nine months behind 😁 Is it just me or does Gavaghan have a N. American accent? She says she's from London. Maybe she means London, Ontario, Canada.
Thanks CosmicPumpkin, appreciated by those of us not allowed to watch live TV because we don't pay the BBC for the privilege, and it's a criminal offence if we do. Disgraceful. Impressive win, literally a smashing score. Hard luck for the losers coming up against a team they probably underestimated.
When I was in high school, we had a quiz in French class about theater terms. For setting, I wrote mise en scene. I was marked wrong and when I questioned it the teacher said the answer should have been lieu. Was I wrong? Well, at least I know what mise en scene means.
I haven't watched for a very long time, but have they changed the rules about interrupting the question with their answer? I thought it always used to be that they had to wait.
There would be no point to disallowing interruptions in the bonus questions. The team answering the questions is not competing against the other team as they are in the starter questions (the penalty for wrong answers that interrupt is weighed against the advantage in buzzing in at the earliest possible moment) so whether they wait till the end of the question or interrupt it is entirely up to them.
Extremely disappointing performance from Oxford Brookes! Their captain looked as if he was on holiday, and gave off unbelievably leisurely vibes. Most times he seemed more interested in scanning his surroundings and smiling benignly at his teammates than in answering questions. Broadbent and Gardner made for a striking contrast, but got going too late. Congrats to the Open University, who looked so incredibly switched on, they could have powered an entire village with their energy. I cannot wait to see them again!
The question was about the common name, so it's correct. Biologically, it's not a bear, but commonly it is known as a "bear". A coconut is not a nut, but who cares.
In Australia they are only known as Koala, we never say koala bear. Tourists and other countries persist in calling them by the incorrect term. They will catch on eventually
Nobody has agreed to anything. Rule no 1: don't look at the comments until you have watched the video. The board is normally used to discuss the video, which is impossible to do without menitoning the result.
Well, to quote Wikipedia "The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), sometimes called koala bear". Both Koala and Koala Bear refer to Phascolarctos cinereus. The question was not "Is the Koala a bear?".
A KOALA IS NOT A BEAR and I cannot believe that Uni Challenge accepted the answer given (and then had the host confirm it). The koala is a marsupial. It's closest living relative is a wombat, which is also a marsupial and also not a bloody bear. For a show that's all about high-level intellectual rigour this is a massive error. Do better, UC.
I don't care what incorrect term people use, I expect the question setters on University Challenge to require contestants to answer their questions correctly. @@vig6321
Au contraire, she is attractive in so many ways. Looking deep into those limpid eyes through those enormous lenses, she would mesmerise you with her voice, dazzle you with her intellect, and bewitch you with her inner beauty. An afternoon in her company would be well spent. I must confess also being somewhat taken with her physical appearance, but that is a secondary consideration.
The show is edited for television, there's a high chance that they speed some things up in the process. I remember reading a few years ago that Paxman himself said that they will cut chunks out if neither team knows any answers over a long period of time!
I noticed that Gavaghan did not confer regarding her answers but I took it merely as an indication that she was confident about her responses and didn’t need to confer. (Sometimes you just know the answer.) That she didn’t lose any points while not conferring was consistent with that impression.
