Remarks by Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, BJ '77, ninth commander of U.S.Special Operations Command, Texas Exes Life Member, and Distinguished Alumnus. University-Wide Commencement The University of Texas at Austin, May 17, 2014.
This guy is a living legend. I recently reached out to him to help support and inspire my Dad to go through some important medical procedures that he was scared of and refusing. I didn't expect much but 2 days later he called Dad and managed to convince him. He has told me to call him anytime Dad needs anything. Completely blown away by his generosity of spirit. Furthermore he lives by the principals. Never miss the chance to inspire.
Saw this speech 1 year ago. I am 50 years old. I started to make our bed every day. After 3 months my wife said: " You have changed. You are more positive as you ever was." This speech changed me. I was always positive, but now I feel that I can still change everything I want when I believe in myself. Greetings from Austria.
many of us say that anyone who is smart enough to do that job - is too smart to want that job - but you are correct - wouldn't that be great to have a president like him - we have been blessed with a few in our history - but not nearly enough I'm afraid
Exactly why McRaven wrote his Editorial in the NYT about the dangers of "leaders" like Trump. Not that McRaven wants to be President, but that he thinks we can do far better in choosing our leaders. I agree 1000%.
This is a good one i agree. But my favorite speech (a diffrent genre entierly) is Alexander the Great guilt tripping his whole army to stay with him. Look up "The greatest Speech in History? Alexander the Great & The Opis"
@@jonathanbelmares8241 Thanks. I just listened to it. Was a brilliant speech as well. In the beginning, the text says that his exact words are unknown, but his words must've been powerful to get those soldiers to follow him and beg for forgiveness.

At almost the lowest point in my life ramdomly came across this speech. Not in a battlefield but my mine field was jobless, spouse very delicate brain sugery, son hit by a car, did not see how to move forward. Was going to have to give up our home but had to find a way to keep it. Had to fix the home by myself to get a loan. Took 2½ years to secure the loan. All repairs done by me. Got all done but the last step was repairing roof. I skitterred all over the roof repairing securing the tiles. Trimmed trees by standing on the roof. At last done & came down my ladder but............woke up on ground head bleeding ............. just stood up blood streaming my sides. Went inside washed the blood off & immediately continued sanding the house im prep for painting. My car blew the seals so only way to get groceries was walk. Did that made dinner. That night though was in pain like I never knew ~ my back was screaming ~ allowed myself tylenol ~ next day I knew had to keep painting ~ had to finish pullng all the weeds out of the yard & trim all the bushes prune all bushes. Got my inspection got my loan. Continued to walk 3-4 miles daily for groceries carried on my back til 2 years later but started to fall down a lot. Then in March too much lack of balance & pain. Well keep going. Do not have good medical care so tough it out. I do not like canes but finally gave in a month ago though with my momentum just start running without the cane. Keep moving. Keep moving. Keep moving. Yard is a mess again plumbing needs repair roof needs more repair ....... but McRaven's tinder resonates through my inner sanctum ~ keep moving keep moving keep moving ~ ride over pain like surfing a huge wave 🌊🏄♀️ keep moving keep moving keep moving ~ 🪜🧗♀️🏊♀️🏃♂️🦘

Admiral McRaven is one of the most modest humble men I have ever known, and yes I really do know him he was my commander. He was the calming men you will ever see. When things got tense he was at his best. I don't think he would want to be the president of the United States, he is to honest to be a politician. Enjoy your life Sir, you deserve that
I don't think America needs or wants another politician, we need a leader. I really hope he's open to being president because America needs him now more than ever. 2020 is a frightening time to live in and we could really use a calming influence.
Every time that I feel like it wasn't worth it all the efforts and the sacrifices made, I come back to this video and regain hope within my darkest moments. This speech is a real motivational exercise.

I worked with the Admiral on some real technical items when I was stationed in DC. He was easily the most intelligent, thoughtful, understanding, competent, and professional leader. I would work with 15 Admirals at a time, and without even opening his mouth he was by far the shining star. I would go to combat anytime, anywhere, and lay my life down for him. Unfortunately, we have no senior military officers like him and never will again.
A friend of mine is a high school teacher. He has a special role. He is given all the problem kids... .... this video is the first thing he shows them. I proud to say that I was the man who introduced him to this clip. At the age of 61 I still come back and watch this video to get myself back on track. This is leadership... I don't know this man... but he is my leader.
My father was a sergeant in the US Army before I was born. One of the things he taught me when I was very young was to make my bed. He wasn't mean about it, didn't yell at me when I did a bad job, but it stuck in my head. The Admiral is right, that simple task was the start of a disciplined, fulfilling life. Thanks Dad. Miss you so very much.
May your dad Rest In Peace 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 forever a hero and will always be in our hearts. He was one of the many brave people that keep us safe everyday and risk everything for us, nothing but respect and love towards him. God bless him🇺🇸❤️
Miss my father to! He was US Air Force in the early 1950's. The first thing we did as children in the morning was make our beds. I always wondered why! Now I know. I still roll out of the sack and the first thing accomplished after turning off the alarm clock is....... Make my bed!
This was during my graduation from UT in 2014! I always refer to this commencement speech when I feel uninspired. Thank you, Admiral, for lifting us up. HOOK'EM
I thing it is amazing that you heard this speech on your graduation - I cannot imagine how it feels when a casual speech turns into something such inspiring. Although it was somewhat coincidence that you heard this back int he days - I congratulate you for this experience!
Im 31 years old was feeling down and unhappy about life two years ago. I kept thinking this cant just be it. I watched this. I have always wanted to serve in the Military but was scared to fail. I just enlisted and leave for MEPS tomorrow im so pumped and excited for this new journey in my life.
Mr. McRaven: One of my university professors told us to read your book, "Make your bed", which I absolutely LOVED. Then, he also reccomended we hear your speech, if we wanted. I did. I must say, both the book and your amazing oratory have given me a new way to see and go through life. I'm forever grateful for that. Thank you, Mr. McRaven!!
Its not over till you say it is. Dont ring that bell. No matter how down you are, you still have power to change 10 lives. You have got this. Best of luck my friend

Five years ago when I was a freshman at Viet Nam university, one of my professors there showed my class this video and told us to write an essay about the video. 5 years later, I'm now a postgraduate student at UT Austin... what a coincidence
Your comment made me think of a few questions: First of all, are you still a Vietnamese citizen? Second, are you now back in Vietnam? Third, why would a Communist country show this video? Fourth, what are your current political beliefs? 5th, how were you able to attend UT Austin? 6th, Are your parents members of the Communist Party in Vietnam?

I listened to this in 2015, I was working in Japan and it was a rough time for me. I started to make my bed every morning, just to try, 3 years later my work was a success and my boss who was a bully lost the fight because my work flawless. Admiral McRaven thank you !
As the Chair of the UT System Faculty Advisory Council, I had the privilege of working with Admiral McRaven for three years--he is the real deal. He was an inspiring and empowering supporter of teaching and learning and of students and faculty. I will be forever thankful that I got to sit in his office and talk with him about these matters. I wish he'd run for governor or president!
I am depressed, passing through a very tough time in my life right now. I listen to this speech quite often, it gives me hope that things are going to get better. I hope I will come out of this dark tunnel my life has turned into.

.. and what exactly is great about him? Maybe his greatest achievement will be to get people to make their beds in the morning. Somehow, many of us in civilian life are managing just fine and don't need a nanny as some of America's toy soldiers do!
.. yes, we know about 4 star hotels - just below a 5 star and above a 3 star, big deal. So what exactly is special operations? .. making sure all soldiers can make their bed in the morning? Amazing! Hopefully they'll soon qualify to cope with the reality of civilian life where they have to work and be independent and cook their own food instead of having a nanny to coddle them.
My sister died and a friend sent me this link... I was in a really bad place... I'm a black English woman of Caribbean extraction and this spoke to me. I got up. I made my bed. I sent this man an email, not to receive a response, but just to let him know that he helped me. Saved me from agoraphobia and alcoholism... He changed my life for the better. He actually replied... Years after this speech. I still make my bed. I thank him for that. I owe him for that. I make my bed as that first step every damn day. 👊🏿

Thank You for sharing your experience that illustrates with yet another example why Admiral McRaven is such an outstanding man...helping you go from a really bad place to having a life changed for the better....can't do much better than that! @@michaellombardo1535 I don't know that he could not do a greater job of spreading his message of hope and discipline from the civilian side of life than as the Commander-in-Chief(aka As President). The role/job and duties of a President like most other roles/jobs has been pretty well defined and it makes it very hard to stray from the job description.

Honestly we don't deserve him. Media would find a way to tear him down, call him every kind of -ism in the book, and further divide this country. I have no words to actually thanks Admiral McRaven for these speech. Neither I can describe how much he transform my life, because these video came to me in a "hell of a week". Five years ago, Puerto Rico was hit by "Hurricane María". My life as I knew it was shattered and I felt deeply in pain and lost. But somehow his speech inspired me to moved forward by taking care of others, in a way I never experienced before. Afterwards, I had heard this speech over 20 times and I had shared it twice as much. Last week, Hurricane #Fiona hits us in a way I didn't expected. Like a "mantra" I repeated to myself, "you must be calm, you must be composed". Every minute of last weekend, felted awful and disorienting, but I remembered McRaven's voice..."you must be calm, you must be composed", words that helped me to be focused and aware of my inner self. Right know, I don’t really know what's next. But I do know that " I need to be calm and composed". I also know, that it's time to summons all my strength, abilities and knowledge to swim through these "sharks" or be ready to "punch them in their snouts", metaphorically speaking. I honestly believe that McRavens experiences, change my mindset and world through all these years. I respectfully salute the Admiral and I'm thankful for his service. Blessings 🙌
Im sorry wait a second. Agreed great speech, amazing quote, especially pertaining to events nowadays. Also, youre amazingly gorgeous and you like Skyrim.
My dad is a retired three-star. McCraven spoke at his retirement and I've had the honor of hanging out with him at a few dinners. He's an amazing guy. Down to earth and well-spoken. His son is a Ph.D. in Physics.
This speech still gives me chills every time I hear it. It was played by commanders when I was in uniform and it's been played by teachers and employers since I've been out. This is one of the greatest motivational speeches ever.
This video has changed my life and was a big part of me being able to finish strong and avoid crashing hard during a terrible high school experience. I will never allow myself, or any of those I know, to ever be in a situation like I was again. I was really struggling during those times. I needed help finding the courage deep down to refuse to let go of my visions, to see the light in the distance. When McRaven mentions that there was “no ambient light”, that really resonated with me. I applied underqualified and out of state to UT Austin specifically mentioning my story listening this and how it kept me moving forward. To my surprise ended up getting in. I’ve ultimately decided to take scholarship money at TCU with it being a better fit, sorry Longhorn fans, but thank you Admiral McRaven for inspiring me to find myself through challenge. I will always come back to this video.
I play this in the morning while I’m making breakfast. My 7 year old absolutely loves it. During quarantine I got in a bit of a funk & came out to the kitchen where my sweet boy had everything needed for pancakes laid out with this encouraging speech playing on the tv. He said “We are NOT sugar cookies! Let’s do this together!” I burst into tears. Pulled up my big girl pants & took a lesson from my child. We don’t give up just because things look different. ❤️
If I ever find myself in a position to point people towards this video, especially younger folk. I always do it. This is my favorite speech I have ever heard.
Mr. McRaven, unlike your commencement speaker when you were graduating, you will be remembered for your brilliant speech, by many many thousands, if not millions of people throughout the world as the guy who made everyone make their beds in the morning. And you shall not be forgotten. The beds around the world will remember your deeds for generations to come.

+The Marshmallow Man I give more than 2 shits and i'm in Italy. Im pretty grown up and marrried, but i did start making my bed only a few months ago when i first saw this vid. Plus, it got me interested in the training he speaks about which i then studied. And while studying i learned, and i bought more books, and studied more, and got involved in the physiscs and psycology of it all. And now, guess what, i have a completely new perception of my phisical and mental limits, or lack of thereofs. In the end it is my credit, but this speech ultimately got me to become a better person.
Man...that's not the point after those 20 minutes of speech...what he wants to say is make a small difference...do small things in a positive way ....and not make your bed perfectly each day......

Amazing speech! A friend of mine was in his class (the short kind that swam and run the fastest, the Greek-American - he's not that short, like 5'8"-5'9"). He is now in his 60s and competing in international cycling competitions, beating, (in sprint of all things), guys in their 20s! Once a warrior, always a warrior.
I return to this often... to unshackle myself and remember to keep stepping forward though every difficult moment that weighs heavy and through every glorious day to not be taken for granted.
Really an example of the finest of men. Us watching this video could barely dream to accomplish what this man has. A complete inspiration. A shame, then, to think that today there are many who belittle him just because of political differences.
SirbgWanker Dude! I always wondered why they make them do crazy cruel things like crawl through mud... I had NO idea they had to stand in it all NIGHT in the cold. I learned a lot from this speech, a hell of a lot. I felt very bad about having been disrespectful toward military types in the past... I loved how meaning that could be applied to real everyday life situations arose out of the various examples of training he gave. I was, quite literally, stunned.
SirbgWanker God yeah!! I don't understand how they SURVIVE it!! I'm truly embarrassed by my own ignorance sometimes. But ~ I'll always admit I was wrong, when corrected. I also watched a couple of vids about shell-shock victims from WW1, I think...? Some very stupid and mean comments on those... These men suffered for ALL OF US! WTF have I been doing with my life?? You know what my biggest problem is? Misguided idealism... I think...

How I WISH I had heard this speech much younger in my life. It would have helped me to avoid some painful choices. Still, I managed to follow MOST of his admonitions and muddle through. In life, we ALL need heroes. I challenge the young people in the audience to listen to what this gentlemen has to say and to try to live your life by his words. You will find your hero if you do.
Gavin Sloma yeah gavin don't stoop down to that lvl. Yesterday this video was shown at our LISD convocation for the 2023-2024 year, all our staff saw it. I had already seen it and would like to thank Admiral W.H. McRaven for such an awesome speech. May God bless you.
This is the sort of video that I would go back and watch when I need a spiritual pick-me-up. I've watched this video twice and both times the ten lessons he refers to speak to me in a way that feels personal. It's difficult to pick a favorite lesson talked about in this video since every lesson spoken about is so profoundly inspiring, but if I had to I would choose lesson number nine; "If you want to change the world, start singing when you are up to your neck in mud." The reason I chose lesson number nine as my favorite is because I resonate so much with trying to find hope in the most trying of times. I had a very difficult upbringing and I won't bore anyone with the specifics, but hope is what kept me going. I have sung my heart out time and time again when I was up to my neck in the mud of my own life and hearing Naval Admiral William H. McRaven speak about learning this lesson moved me. If I had to give anyone going through a difficult time any piece of advice, it would be this.

I need to study hard to become skilled in the job I'm currently doing. And you told me not to be afraid of doing extra circuses. I had very difficult times. And you told me not to ever ring the bell. I had given it all, but I ended up with a project failed. I have to accept that I'm in a sugar cookie position now. Thanks Admiral!
This gentleman inspired me from sixth form, through to an undergraduate degree, to an attempt at Sandhurst (sadly a fail), to now, a PhD candidate. Even as a civilian, I salute you sir, God bless
I saw this speech about 1.5 years ago, as a teenager going through an existential crisis who has been searching for motivational speeches, I strangely found this speech the most inspirational. And just the fact that an action so small, can change the course of our day, fascinates me. So I fixed my bed every day, even on days when I had to change the sheets right after, because 1. It looks and makes me feel tidier and 2. For the reason this great man said, it's the first step in changing the world, as peculiar as it may sound. I must say, it definitely changed my look on life and honed my discipline.
Good to hear and I agree this is one of the best motivational speeches I’ve heard. I was making my bed neatly before I even saw this speech and I never quite understood why. This speech help put that need into perspective. I also feel like it helps give a person a sense of order and a way of controlling the things in your life that you can dictate.
