In today's demo, we are showcasing the Univibe tones in the R. Weaver FX Violet Vibe, Kingtone Vibe 1968, Sabbadius Funky Vibe, & Sabbadius Tiny Vibe. Listen to each univibe circuit in a band context and soloed on its own. The guitar was plugged straight into the vibe pedalboard (no buffer between the guitar and univibes), which in turn was plugged into the amp's input. We also share some thoughts on each vibe and tips on what you may want to listen for when trying to find the Univibe circuit that best suits your style of playing.

Thanks, Wayne. I appreciate the sub. Univibe is such a cool effect, but it seems to be a hard effect for pedal makers to pull off well. IMO, there are a lot of mediocre Univibe pedals on the market. I wanted to offer a properly recorded comparison of some the better ones I've gotten mine hands on. Hopefully this video will save one you guys some time and money when deciding on the best vibe for you.

The Violet Vibe in this video is a couple of years old. I spoke with Rick at R Weaver FX and he informed me that his current builds are utilizing old Japanese bulbs and photocells. He says this has drastically improved the range of useable intensity on his vibes compared to what's heard in this video. The Funky Vibe in this video is from 2020. I spoke with Nico of Sabbadius and he told me that any of his vibes built after November 2022 utilize new photocells that improves the upper frequency sweep of the modulation. He said that any post Nov '22 Funky Vibe will sound more like the Tiny Vibe in the video. Also I want to thank Jesse at Kingtone for pointing out a setting issue with his pedal in a prior version of this video. Jesse informed me that internal mix control was not at the factory setting when he heard the prior clip of the Vibe 1968. Thanks to his feedback, I was able to correct that and re-film the demo using his vibe to represent it more accurately. PSA: if you buy this pedal used be sure to doublecheck the internal trim controls to ensure a previous owner returned them to their intended settings. Kingtone has a video on it on his RU-vid channel.

The Violet Vibe and Tiny Vibe were my two favs tonally speaking. I ended up buying a Midnight Vibe (version 2) from R Weaver FX after I made this video. I like it more than the Violet Vibe in this video (which I loved). The Version 2 has a more useable range of intensity and a little extra upper frequency extension over the Violet Vibe in this video. If you have the space, a vibe from R Weaver FX is the best bang for the buck amongst the high dollar vibes. The Sabbadius Tiny Vibe is the way to go if you’re willing to spend a little more and are in need of a smaller footprint. It’s the best sounding vibe in a small enclosure. Tonally they both make me happy but they’re a little different. The Sabbadius sounds more like Hendrix recordings to my ears; you’re getting the pros and cons of that specific late 60s vibe tone. The R Weaver FX sounds like how I want an ideal vibe to sound. It addresses the quirks about the classic circuit that at times I wish were different. The preamp voicing pairs great with any guitar. The classic univibe circuit design sounds great with strats, but not as sweet with other guitars. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.

Great video! I’ve tried all of these and several others except for the Tiny Vibe. I ended up with the KT 1968 on my board as the trim pots inside and the insane amount of tone shaping with the hidden features allowed me to get it almost identical to my Sir Henry vibe but with a smaller footprint. The modern features and tweak-ability might not be for everyone, but if you trust your ears you can really tailor it to your tastes!

Thanks! I've found vibes to be so different from one builder to the next. They really are subject to the build approach and parts. The Kingtone 1968 is a great vibe for the player who isn't afraid to tweak. If you've got the coin, it's a good one. I've always wanted to try the Sir Henry. Rick at R Weaver FX speaks highly of Dustin at Tinsley Audio. Thanks for watching!

I got the Funky Vibe as soon as it was released, single digit serial #. In my experience, The Chorus mode does darken the sound quite a bit -- but on the other hand, the Vibrato mode adds some presence, higher mids maybe. I use the latter a lot as a "secret sauce". Lowering the depth and ratio below 9 o clock--gives it a nice subtle warped old tape texture. Gotta love it
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
Very cool! My Funky Vibe is #249. I actually use the vibrato mode more than the chorus mode when playing and recording. I love the warble it adds. I've used it guitar and rhodes. Like you said, it sounds like an old tape. I like the depth around 2 o'clock and the speed around 10 o'clock for that slow sea sick vibrato. It's a must-use effect when playing chords in ballads.

Excellent comparison of some of the best Uni Vibes out there. I went with the Kingtone, after debating over real estate vs an expression pedal option, which for the Sabbadius, meant a bit more money. The Kingtone won out, and I’ve used it in quite a few gigs, with quite a few other players as well as non musicians, asking what I was using to get the sound. I think I sold at least two for Kingtone, by way of me playing Hey Baby and Maggot Brain with one, as well as a few other songs. I ended up with a discount from a previous purchase, and a holiday discount, that made it possible to get the 1968 for $120 off. Even if to just resell it, was worth buying it to try it out. They didn’t cost as much as I’m seeing many places now, either. I really love how tweakable it is. It’s nearly made me forget about the expression pedal issue, but for playing something like Machine Gun or to use the Vibrato like a want, the expression pedal makes a difference. I really would’ve loved the Sabbadius in a Tiny Vibe enclosure, with a standard expression pedal option. I have to give a shout-out to the Mojo Hand FX Villanova. It’s the best photocell Uni Vibe, in an actual small enclosure. It has a mix control, and a tone knob, instead of a Chorus/Vibe switch, and a volume knob, with at least 10 db of boost, maybe a little more. It gets very close to the best Uni Vibe sound, while being able to get a blend with that mix knob, that is just a unique sound. A bit like the Earthquaker The Depths, can do, but just has something special, that’s kept me from ever trading or selling it.
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
I've not come across the Mojo Hand FX Villanova. Thanks for the heads up. If I come across one I'll have to try it out. It's not surprising to hear of a builder moving the W/D mix up top on a dial for the user to play with. Most manufacturers opt to set and forget that internally to honor the original layout, but the Villanova sounds like a fun take on the controls. The Kingtone Vibe is the one to get if you value tweak-ability, a small footprint, & the dual settings feature. It wasn't my favorite of these tonally but A) that's super subjective and B) that doesn't mean it sounded bad. It still sounds miles better than the majority of other vibes on the market. It's a great sounding vibe. You were lucky to score one $120 off MSRP bc it has the steepest price tag of the whole lot. That said, it also has my favorite control layout of all of them. Jesse is a wizard when it comes to that stuff. It's evident, that in addition to the sound, a lot of thought & intention goes into the user experience with his pedals. I wouldn't be surprised to see @sabbadius eventually offer a Tiny Vibe with a TRS jack for use with an optional speed pedal. It might not be possible bc there's not a lot of room in the Tiny Vibe enclosure, but it wouldn't surprise me if Nico pulled it off. He is relentless when it comes to refining his vibe circuits. I really admire that about him.

@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
I’ve not tried the Shiftee Vibe but I’d like to. I have the Tiny Vibe on my board at the moment as it’s sitting at the sweet spot between size and tone for me, but these all have their merits. I purchased a current production (2023) Midnight Vibe that arrived yesterday from Rick at R Weaver FX. He’s using an old Japanese bulb and revised photocells in his current production vibes, a difference from the 2020 Violet Vibe in the video. Im beyond impressed with sound of his current production vibe. The Violet Vibe in vid sounds great. However the new Midnight Vibe sounds even better and has a more useable range of tones on the controls. His vibes are easily the best value for the money and among my two favs tonally speaking. GREAT vid, Jim! Killer playing- and one of my favorite Jimi songs ("Hey Baby" - I first heard it on the Rainbow Bridge album). I have been a UniVibe guy for a LONG time. But, it has been way too many years since I had a good one. This shootout really digs in. I am really torn - I like both the Sabbadius (in fact both the big one and the mini) and the R Weaver. I guess I need to come over and try both. Or better yet - get you to bring all 3 over to try with my rigs!!!
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
Thanks Matt. I also was introduced to that tune via the Rainbow Bridge record. As far as the vibes go, you can’t go wrong with any of these. It’s just preference, which best suits your application, and budget really. The Violet Vibe is easily the best value ($350) and is tied for my preferred tonally. The next up price wise are the Sabbadius Tiny Vibe 68 and Kingtone Vibe 1968 around $500. Then the Funky Vibe 68 around $550. Sabbadius has a lot of variants based on different Jimi recordings; which is cool if you’re a Jimi fan. The Funky Vibes are for the players who want that old school Shin-ei aesthetic. The Tiny Vibe is for the player who wants that tone but in a pedalboard friendly size. The Kingtone Vibe 1968 is appealing for its tone tweaking capabilities, the dual setting feature, & smaller foot print. Pick your poison.

I bought R Weaver FX’s Midnight Vibe v2 after I made this video. It’s a little sweeter and has wider useable range of depth compared to the Violet Vibe heard here thanks to Rick’s updates. I have it and the Sabbadius Tiny Vibe ‘68. You can’t go wrong with either. The 2023 ‘69 Funky Vibe shouldn’t sound too different from a current production Tiny Vibe ‘69. I think Nico was using the new custom made LDRs in both, which I felt were an improvement over the old ones that were in my 2020 Funky Vibe ‘68.

Taking care of good power helps ( 18V and good safety buffer on current (mA)). I bought a current double adapter for my Cioks Dc5 to combine 2 x 18V outlets and I had the impression it feels even more syrupy and vibey (no scientific A/B )

Does the Strymon Lex qualify as a Uni Vibe, or is it a leslie simulator? What is the difference?
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
Strymon Lex is emulates the old Leslie Rotary Speaker and Horn cab. A common misconception is that the Univibe was made to emulate a Leslie cab, but this apocryphal myth isn't actually true. Fumio Mieda, the engineer behind who created the Univibe, designed it to emulate the modulation he heard in Russian radio signals bouncing off the atmosphere before the signals reached Japan. While there is some overlap between something like Strymon Lex and a Univibe, there is a lot of difference too. Hopefully that helps! Thanks for watching.

What's your thoughts on using an EQ before or after the univibe to have more control over frequency?
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
I've not experimented with using EQ to compensate for a vibe's frequency response, but I'm sure you could get great results going that route. I'd rather just find the vibe that has a frequency response that I like that doesn't require additional work/gear. For the video I was only using: guitar -> vibe -> buffer -> amp in the chain. No buffer between the guitar and vibe. Off camera, I did experiment adding a buffer between the guitar and vibe and it helped add some sparkle in the upper frequenciies with vibes that had a warmer upper frequency response (Funky Vibe and Kingtone Vibe 1968). I like both of these vibes more with the buffer between the guitar and vibe more than without. I also experimented off camera with vibe placement relative to drives and fuzzes. I like the Sabbadius vibes after dirt and fuzz. They sound murkier in the mid frequencies before the dirt pedals. The Violet Vibe sounds almost the same before or after drive pedals, but I still prefer it after my drives. The Kingtone Vibe 1968 sounded much better before drives. It sounded brighter (in a good way ) than what you hear in the video. I was surprised that these four vibes seemed to lean their own way in regards to their placement relative to other pedals. I'd recommend trying pre and post drive placement with whatever vibe you use since these four seemed to be all over the place in regards to how they sounded placement wise.

of the pedals, what preamp do you like the best and why?
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 5 месяцев назад
If you want the vintage Univibe preamp sound (aka rolls off upper frequency information) go with the Sabbadius Tiny Vibe. If you want something that sounds a little more modern (aka not as dark sounding / brighter than a typical Univibe preamp) go with the R Weaver Midnight Vibe. I have both of these vibes still. They’re both great. The preamp in the Sabbadius seems more vintage correct to me but I prefer the preamp in the R Weaver FX which is voiced slightly brighter than an old school Univibe preamp. Both sound great just slightly different flavors.

Hi, I'm looking for a uni-vibe pedal that doesn't affect the sound, or rather, as natural as possible, because some completely change the sound, which one do you recommend?
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 8 месяцев назад
Most of them color your signal, but some do this more than others. The ones that strictly recreate the vintage circuit do it the most. The R Weaver FX does it less than those. The Kingtone has an option internally to adjust the input impedance so you can get some top end back. Supposedly the new Thorpy ER-2 vibe has a more neutral preamp too but I’ve yet to play through that one. Best of luck on your search!

I've heard high praise for each of those. I wish I could've included every reputablt, current production Univibe circuit but I couldn't justify the cost of doing that just to make a video. I wish I could have. Thanks for watching!

Which would you recommend best to use with a les paul? That has the least amount of low end?
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 10 месяцев назад
That is a great question. When I made this video, I didn't have a Les Paul. I have one now, but I don't own all of these vibes. I bought a R Weaver FX Midnight Vibe after I made this video and I still own the Sabbadius Tiny Vibe. I sold the other two I probably would go with the R Weaver FX if I had the pedalboard space. If I didn't have the space, I'd go with the Sabbadius Tiny Vibe '68. I might would even experiment with an EQ pedal before the Vibe if I could get my hands on one simply to tailor the lower frequency content to my liking for the neck pickup.

@@Funk11147 Nice! I think you'll be pleased with your decision. The Midnight Vibe is currently on my main board. I'm still loving it. It sounds at least as good as vibes that are twice its price, arguably better. Circle back after you've played it some and let me know what you think. Cheers!

Regarding the Funky Vibe. I own both the Fillmore East (2020) and the Woodstock (2021) The Fillmore uses old vintage photocells and the Woodstock uses "the new 7mm custom-made CdS photocells" Where did you get the information about new photocells post 2022??
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
Nice! I’ve always wanted to try the Fillmore East and Woodstock editions. How would you describe the difference between the two? Nico actually provided me that info about the photocells used pre/post Nov ‘22. He’s very friendly and approachable if you ever buy from him directly.

I haven’t had the chance to play one in person but I thought the clips of it online sounded great. It’s around the same price as the R Weaver FX offerings IIRC.

I'd love to try one of those, but I haven't played one. The cool thing about the Korg Nu Vibe is that it was designed by Fumio Mieda, the engineer behind the original Honey/Shin-Ei Univibe.

It was from American Eagle of all places. Maybe like 2014 or 2015. Check eBay. The sizing runs small so get one size bigger than you think.

All these vibe clones don't have a very strong "Double Pulse" which all the engineers have failed to look into making the vibe design have a very strong double pulse effect
@tonecast1
@tonecast1 Год назад
The Funky Vibe and Kingtone Vibe 1968 have a pretty good double pulse. What I played here didn’t really showcase it, but you add some fuzz and play an E chord, and you’d hear that they both double pulse pretty nicely in the lower frequencies. Thanks for chiming in!

Hahaha! I’ve played so many different vibes before arriving at these so I feel your pain. MicroVibe, DryBell Vibe , Castledine Vibe, Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe, etc… I feels like most makers miss the mark on the Univibe. The vibes in this video are among the best I’ve played to date. These definitely stand out from the other i mentioned. I’d like to also try the Tinsley Audio Sir Henry and the Formula B Vintage Vibe. Thanks for watching!
