Initial inspection of a EF Johnson tube type Ham AM/CW transmitter. This one is a factory build unit. There was evidence of a cobbler playing around inside. Lucky, all was easily reversible. Obvious hazards and Power supply issues were corrected. Controlled start up is a must. Never just plug one of these transmitters in without making sure it is safe to operate. Always use a variac that has an amp meter so you can monitor for current spikes. Plus, keep in mind, high voltage is present. Approaching these without proper training could result in "lights out"! So be careful.

Thanks Terry. I've a lot of caps & resistors to replace in mine before I can even think about applying power. I'm dreading pulling the front panel to replace the mic connector. I've seen the vid you posted detailing that process. It's going to be fun :-) 73

Do you ever use a dim bulb circuit when you bring something like this up for the first time? Thanks for taking the time to share your expertise with us.

Never used one, always use a variac

And watch the blasted modulation transformer fry the 807's.

Was the modification to the 807s, plate modulation?

The transmitter had plate modulation using the pair of 807's. It looks like someone was feeding in external audio

I have a Heathkit sb102 that needs help. I think it's out of my league.
