Razor is an additive synth. It doesn't have an output filter to rolloff before Nyquist - it just stops producing partials if Nyquist is about to be crossed over! What you're seeing in Spectrum is, I believe, the smoothing of the FFT algorithm used to generate the frequency response curve in the spectrum display.

@mechwarreir2
@mechwarreir2 Год назад
@@davidpereira4455 Mario is incorrect, additive synths tend to create a fixed number of partials (Harmor creates 528, Razor creates 320, Serum creates over 1000 but isn't additive engine). Additively processing ALL harmonics is difficult, so additive synths tend to have a limited range. Serum's higher harmonics do get cut off by the Nyquist of sample rate (44.1khz / 2 = 22khz), which also gets cut off if you play a sine wave above that frequency. If you increase sample rate to say 192khz you get EVEN MORE partials, but those higher partials are literally invisible to your ear and can cause Transient artifacts (which can be good or bad, depends on how used). Also over sampling can amplify Gibbs attenuation.

Oh yeah, Its not a filter, Its actually more of a static "spectral envelope" (Not envelope like a modulation envelope), but the output of one of those sine bank modules will always have that general shape ((I dont think that is changeable without an extensive workaround)). The line of thinking being that limiting amplitude of the partials approaching the Nyquist limit will help reduce any aliasing caused by processing downstream. Thank you for posting a video about modifying Razor! I love your content! p.s .Reaktor for life!!!

You will probably not find the requested filter in RAZOR itself. What you are looking at is the Anti Aliasing Filter of your DAW, which prevents you from going over the Nyquist frequency which in your case is at 22.05kHz if you're running on 44.1kHz BTW love your tutorials - keep them coming!

Higher sample rate = higher frequency range before the "Fletcher Munson" curve theory steps in. AU5 hopefully you see this comment because you can research this sound theory because I know it can help you. Any audio running at a processor at 44.1khz p/s will cut off around a little after 20khz. Set your sample rate higher and if your processor can handle it, it will be able to do the math and replicate the higher frequencies after 20k. Your sample rate at 44.1khz p/s "is" the filter cutting off your audio a little bit after 20khz. . Fletcher Munson curve theory.
@au5music
@au5music 4 года назад
The Fletcher Munson curve is an equal-loudness contour based on human perception. I believe you're referring to the Nyquist frequency. Setting sample rates higher than 44.1khz does give a higher quality sound within the human hearing range because it eliminates aliasing, particularly when doing FM or PM based synthesis where frequencies much higher than 22khz are being calculated. That said, compared to other synthesizers generation of sawtooth waves, which do have a roll-off frequency dependent on DAW sample rate, Reaktor's Nyquist filter seems to be much steeper and conservative than other synths.

This concept only applies to additive synths. Serum does have additive capabilities and goes up to 2048 partials iirc, which is plenty. In other synthesis something that parallels this concept would be something like sample resolution and aliasing artifacts, although that is a different type of degradation of sound.

Playing in those extreme low octaves makes the difference very clear, but why would you do that, it makes no sense? The fundamental is like two octaves or more lower than the threshold of hearing. It's a contrived way to make Razor sound bad, and then to "fix it"! (It reminds of that old joke: "Doctor, doctor, when i do this, it hurts!".... Doctor: "Then don't do it!") A better test is to bring up Razor on two tracks, one with the normal settings and one tweaked (i'm getting 5000, no problem). Then scroll through the same presets on both instances while playing in a normal frequency range. And switch between the two. On a few presets i hear a dramatic difference, but on about 90% i really can't hear any difference. I do have the feeling that in general it makes the reverbs a bit smoother.

@@au5music Razor is NOT a subtractive synth , it's an additive synth that uses partials and reorganizes them, it mimicks the effect of filtering, chorussing , frequency shifting etc..
