“If I could produce an artist, support them in doing their best work, without ever meeting or speaking to them, that would be the highest form of it - I have not achieved that level yet.” I respectfully disagree. You’ve done just that for so many of us for decades! The irony is that the highest form of achievement for many of us is to be able to work directly with you. 🙏🏾🙏🏽🙏🏿 You’re an incredible vessel Rick Rubin✨
the very first part of that is “produce an artist”, as in directly. Sure he’s inspired and supporter strangers but not produce for them. So no he has not reached that level yet
But it’s multidimensional- and simultaneous. It’s ok to let the speaker - speak and leave air around the thought gor it to forment withou addition and or subtraction.
I've said that same thing about Rick .... HE IS DOING THAT! I FEEL HIS PRESENCE ..... Just listen to interviews, the book and I feel inspired ... I don't even need to listen to the words .... that's just his Way of Being and I give thanks it's contagious :)
Two of my favorite voices talking about magic. It's nearly impossible to explain how these men do what they do but god it's fun listening to them try. I learn something every time.
i HAD THE LUCK AND THE HONOR TO BE RICK RUBINS AND FAMILY PRIVATE CHEF FOR TWO WEEKS IN ITALY. RICK RUBIN IS A PERSON THAT HAS A UNIQUE PERSONALITY AND WISDOM ALL AROUND HIM. COOKING EVERYDAY WAS A DELIGHT AND TOTALY FUN AND I ALWAYS GAVE MY BEST, HE MAKES YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE. LISTENING TO HIM IS COMPLETLY RELAXING AND INSPIRING. HIS POWER , WISDOM AND VULNERABILITY MAKE HIM CLOSE AND HUMAN. I WOULD LIKE TO MEET HIM AGAIN!
How blessed you were @dreamchef1626 to be able to spend time with him. I have known him only from a distance, first heard about him when a friend of mine worked for him at Shangra La - he worked for him for 5 years as a studio engineer and just loved him and every minute he got to spend with him! Around the time of covid, Rick told him he thought my friend should work with SZA and he introduced them and as a result my friend won 3 Grammy's this year .... was nominate for EIGHT! He's only about 32 years old ... and a really wonderful guy as well .... Anyways I feel Rick IS my MENTOR even if from a distance and hope to meet him someday! :)
My goodness Rich uses the word apocryphal at the 1:11:45 mark like ppl use it in conversation everyday. It means a story or statement of doubtful authenticity, although widely circulated as being true. Love you Rich for making us not only healthier but keeping us smart!
A great interview about art and creation. It was a very nice journey. The sounds in the background were actually welcome. As I was listening to the podcast while running, it felt like I was sitting outside alongside you two having your conversation.
nature functions on immutable (natural) laws. every individual functions on the same (natural) laws. you might have different preferences, and your own history of abuse / damage, but that does not change the underlying rules.
...why do I hear Rich speaking more than Rick during the course of this conversation? Every time Rick makes a fantastic point I hear Rich moving right on to his next point and then a question but rarely if ever a follow-up question or much evidence he is listening...over talking right to the very end.
I had a bad taste in my mouth re: his connection with Adria Petty who forced Tom Petty's wife out of the creative control of his posthumous work can't help it which makes this whole interview suspect. Especially re: Johnny Cash who was produced by Tom Petty, someone who never takes credit for working with other artists and reveres his hero. He chose Rubin to work with at a point where he no longer needed someone with musical knowledge and the accumulated knowledge of a life time about making records; Rubin I.e. hung around with suggestions as a non musician. Jacob Dylan subsequently worked with him and was intensely frustrated with the experience as he was looking for someone with true technical musical knowledge. Disregard my subjective distrust, wanted to give him a chance, not convinced at all..... and re: the way he handled his transition out of veganism, last straw.
I think I’ll skip this interview as well - and thank you to @Evelyn Baron for the extra perspective. Bashing Veganism is not cool, just because you sat around and ate junk food for years….Rick.
Literally interrupted when he’s basically beatboxing showing us how the magic happens :( I was like nooooo just be quiet and let him finish. This is why they say we have two ears and one mouth. We’re supposed to listen twice as much as we talk …
I could listen to that man for hours. Thank God for Rick Rubin. (And thank you Rich Roll for that great interview!). I'm "binge listening" to his interviews about his book and can't wait to read it. (Also, his story about how he asked the Universe for a sign made me cry. I'm stuck these days, and can't find any answers really. Gonna keep asking. - And I precise that I'm a meditation teacher, so I guess, quite open and connected! Sometimes we're just stuck and we have to accept it...)
I'm a bit stuck on this month too and whenever that happens, I ask myself "maybe I'm supposed to be learning something new" So yeah, it's really good to stay open because maybe you're supposed to get tough this month (or however long) maybe I'm supposed to learn something new, I better pay attention! Just my two cents (not sure it's even worth that much😅)
There are cycles in everything. In lunar cycle it’s the dark moon in seasons it’s winter as rumi said and don’t think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter. It’s quiet but the roots are down there riotous. Listen closely your next state, phase, project is calling you x
Not sure why the interviewer keeps cutting him off to the point of saying,"Let me finish my thought"??? I'm here for Rick Rubin not this joker. It is to Rubin's credit that he is so patient.
I love how Rick is talking about paying attention and attuning our antennae, because that's what I was doing when this podcast, this book and the interview with Andrew Huberman all fell onto my radar on the same day. All while I've been journalling about my own creative process in an attempt to receive better and create more freely.
I listened to the book on Audible while painting in my studio. It’s the most inspiring work I’ve listened to in a long time! Just love the concepts, will listen to this book over and over!!!
interviewer did not allow Rick to finish answering how he solved the problem of translating rap as a music to the general public via code, aka toys in the attic break. interviewers: let your subject ruminate... allow them to explore their answer, which provides value to them.
Inspiring and empowering on many levels. I will be listening to this one again to get everything I missed the first time. Thanks guys for sharing the experience and stories on your creative journey, this is priceless.
I've always said I see the world as a giant painting. I'm an artist, a painter. And when I say that, I get funny looks. But this is it... It is my way of being. Everything is art. There is a painting in every face, in every moment, no matter how mundane or extravagant... And it's just how I see life. I get it now. Rick Rubin made me understand myself more. Thank you for this podcast. My brain cracked open and let in a new world.
Apparently Neil Young was fond of asking session musos to play an instrument they had no experience on. "You're the guitar player? Right, it's keyboards for you today" I could totally see Neil doing that.
I am glad Rick is coming out in the internet age, I found a deep respect listening to this man & hope to read that book soon. Rubin ain't no fool in...
I'd just like to put it out there that Rich Roll (for me) is the greatest voice in healing media since Krista Tippett's On Being. Funny, real, gets guests to disclose deeply and sincerely. Not afraid of real topics that are relevant threads in so many different people. He always brings it back to the similarities, the common, the shared pov. Rick gets us to decloak, shed that skin Ive been living in as to embrace what is God given or in other corners given by the universe. Namaste, both of you!
I like to listen to him but he is a little too "new age" for my liking. "White rich people looking for spirituality" is a boring story that gets told again and again. You either have soul - or you don't! Some obvious but worth mentioning points made here. I will check out his book. Thanks for bringing up Madonna. Her role in music history (especially in support of black artists and the development of Rap and Hip hop) is still very underrated. By the way at 1:25:35 it would be so nice of him to say who you quote, when you quote them: “There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.” __Martha Graham
Mind blowing! 🤯 Hearing this interview was my mystical experience. 🙌🏼🌟✨💎 I wish I could hug both of you. What a gem!!!!!!!!!! I was really opened to an answer for my search and then I ended up bumping into this content God know how, and then 💥🤯🎉🎆🔥OMG! I'm buying his book now. Thank you for making room for a real conversation. You guys hold so much wisdom. I'm looking forward to the next episode. Much love and gratitude for this immense share of inspiration and motivation - pure art. ❤️
If I might add something to the vegans here in the comment section who are angry with Rick R: maybe he isn't bashing veganism. his experiences and beliefs tell him that veganism doesn't work for him. that's okay. that is honesty and that is life. accepting reality is life. now... Rick, you, me, all of us- we are in the middle somewhere of our life experiences and our wisdom and clarity of mind development. widening and contracting our circles of compassion. and i think when we don't at least attempt to find compassion for folks who think differently from us (ethical vegans)- we lose and the animals lose. helping animals and changing the way humans look at them in terms of food, service, clothing, experimentation, entertainment, etc, is not a sprint. and if we are not listening, we fail straight away. so i hear Rick say veganism didn't work for him. that is his truth today and i accept that and him. i feel i would be foolish not to listen, and think about it. aanndd...veganizing one person at a time is not a good strategy, i am sorry to say. so i would like to suggest finding other ways to be in service of change rather than criticizing folks like this. your hearts are huge and they hurt. how do i know this? i have been a full time community organizer for farmed animals for almost a decade (though covid and the subsequent loss of funding killed the nonprofit i worked for) and have seen things i can hardly believe are legal, let alone commonplace. i know your pain. i hope this year we can each find our brightest paths for being of service. may all beings be free from suffering. may all beings be free.
He's definitely gone out of his way to talk about it in a negative light. His intentions may not be to cause harm but the fact that he's starting eating animals again means he's not seriously considering the victims of his choices. Anger can be a helpful emotion to help social change if used to take positive action. If you're apathetic or just accept things as they are then nothing will change. People who think differently than us are contributing to horrific atrocities and while it won't change overnight it does at times require criticizing those who are spreading hurtful ideas, beliefs that ultimately result in more bloodshed.
whats absolutely key is that people who say veganism isn't for them still don't place animals on the same plane as humans...that humans can do whatever we want to them, just as we can invade countries and kill civilians for our reasons because we have the mightier military and "suvival of the fittest". those of us who are vegan for the animals can see this and become angry with the dissociation from this fact. the frustration is in the overall commonplace practice of allowing the conversation to place veganism in the category of "lifestyle choice", like choosing one's wardrobe. we who are vegan for the animals understand that it is a matter of life and death. not "live and let live". we are being asked in truth to "live and let suffer and die horribly". veganism is not at all a lifestyle choice or dietary choice. it is activism against horrific abuses. when people are blatantly racist or want to "shoot all mexicans" as certain presidents have actually said, we don't say "live and let live", or "equality just isn't for him, big deal".
I often ask activists, “ Do you want to be right or do you want to be considered, and effective?” Criticizing people in online comment sections is not activism and is not effective. If you are really determined to make the world a better place, get strategic. Study. Think. Talk to a lot of people. This movement could use some help getting shit done. Peace.
You Guys hit the very Perfect G Spot on the Timeline of my Life. I Am impressed and thankful for the Magic you're able to share. Energy is flowing earthly brothers and sisters. Get out of your own way and keep it coming Jah
I realized pretty early on that there was a common thread between most of my favorite music before I was even out of high school. That common thread was Rick Rubin. He was the first producer I followed the way I follow certain artists. I hope to work with him sooner than later.
Amazing. Recently saw a few videos from Rick Rubin 's perspective and precious wise thoughts and actions such as his recent powerful relationship with Laird Hamilton and thought to myself: "Here's a very good one for Rich Roll's podcast". And here it is. Thank you, Universe.
I interview 60, 70, 80, 90 + year olds around Australia for a living. As you both said - it's an important historical time capsule for families - to record their voice and how they see/saw the world. The conversations are profound, silly, endearing and will live beyond the physical form. All the best, Heath piper
I also think that Aerosmith jumped on board because Steve Tyler knew he was black and had black lineage even back then, although he couldn't really come right out with it till recently! What a beautiful merging way to go Rick Rubin!
It might be a good time to pull out Willaim James' VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE and go to Lectures 16 &17 Mysticism. The Mystical Experience is the At-Oneness With The Absolute Experience which is the Love of God Experience.
I just had the coolest synchronicity while listening to you guys talking about acting on an idea you have. I thought hey that's what Elizabeth Gilbert said in her book and then Rich said that's like what Elizabeth Gilbert said in her book! Wild! I really enjoyed her book (Big Magic), and for me the most memorable part was the story she told about another writer using her idea because it was in the field, and she didn't act on it in time. I wonder how often that happens? I also love Rick's book,❤and I love hearing him speak.
Love Rick Rubins unique talent and the philosophy of "living" that he has evolved. He has brought immense to joy music fans, satisfied the angst of young rebels, and captured pop culture moments like lightning in a bottle. -- Thank you Rich for pursuing the elusive interview.
Rick should have met former podcast guests Ray Cronise or Juliana Hever. Might have helped him lose weight healthfully while still helping the planet eating plants instead of jumping ship. Carbs don't make you fat, excess calories, vegan junk food and nut butter will. Penn Jellet someone you should talk too..
1:00:00 All of us make creative choices, but I must depart from the the concensus being shared in the podcast (and frankly I’m surprised that Rubin concedes). Although everyone makes creative choices NOT EVERYONE is an artist. Rubin himself earlier said he lives on the fringes with a fringe POV. And for better or worse, an artist cannot be like everyone else. That is what makes them an artist. It doesn’t make them better but it does make them different. An artist feels a compulsion to turn that creative impulse into something. Oh, I didn’t know. Maybe I’m wrong. But I just don’t think everyone is an artist because being an artist is really hard. Not hard in the ways most people think. The intellectual demands, the emotional demands, the courage it takes. It’s just not something that everyone does, even though arguably EVERY act is creative. Starting with a baby’s first poo. And I’m not being glib. If as an adult one has ever been constipated then one has an up close and personal experience with the visceral creativity of that scatalogical act. Anyway….🤷🏻♀️

Wow, thank you so much Rich for this thought provoking interview. I will share it with those who I believe, hope will be open to it. Another life altering episode to ponder.blessungs from Canada
Cold dead stop with the phrase "NYU Dorm Room". Spare us with the punk rock and democratization jazz. That's not what this is at all. These are very rich, privileged boys from families that already had connections moving into the music business. A very far cry from the rest of us who grew up in the boros making music as lower or middle class. This is not magic or manifestation, this is business as usual.
Thank you guys for the perspectives that you have, from an artist standpoint sometimes you can see through the blockages of your perfect view of your art. I can see everything you were talking about and how I can just be myself. ❤
As the plack above the front door of a well known studio says. Leave your ego at the door. If you hadn't done the work, you wouldnt be here. Attempting to mystify creating takes credit away from the work it takes to get there. Its work, years and years of hard work that makes good art, regardless of the medium. There is nothing, nothing magical or mystical about making art. The magic is in experiencing the work the artists laid down. That is the only magic.
Outstanding interview Rich!!! Rick Rubin has so much to offer the world with his approach to life. You did an excellent job bringing that out. You and your team made a work of art. 🙏
I wouldn't be surprised if Rick has read and is a fan of the Seth material.. The vibration & reverberation of these two voices in my body and my being, rrrrr 🪷
It might also be a good time to review Abraham Maslow's THE FARTHER REACHES OF HUMAN NATURE and the Chapters titled THE CREATIVE ATTITUDE, A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CREATIVITY, EMOTIONAL BLOCKS TO CREATIVITY, THE NEED FOR CREATIVE PEOPLE.
Anybody who is commenting God bless you. Some amazing conversation about rational thought. Music is such conduit of possibilities that has taken me on a personal journey. As an artist I love creative work and how it just comes to me!
Great Interview. Thanks. Just one note: In the End Rick says we should envision a 'desert'. This is not correct afaik. What we should envision is a 'field'. Because the status of this envisioned field (dry, green, trimmed, chaotic, even, hilly, steep...) is part of the test, afaik. So saying it is a desert, already gives this part of it away. Maybe he saw a desert the first time he made the test? Never the less. Great stuff. Thank you guys.
