At the top of Pikes Peak I got to interview Sebastian Lamour, the lead aero designer of the Pikes Peak Enviate Hypercar by Lovefab. This is one seriously cool piece of kit, Sebastian is a current Sauber F1 employee and spent a lot of hours on designing this car for maximum downforce.

Thanks Kyle, Seb is an amazing resource for a little team like ours to have, he is not only crazy bright and experienced but as you can see is the exact opposite of the supposedly pretentious folks in F1, just a joy to work with. I will also point out that the car drove exactly as his modeling predicted as far aero balance and migration with speed, it was all perfect. He, one other engineer from Sauber, (Manuel Grenier) and Aric Streeter nailed the chassis as well. It was a treat to drive and we can't wait until next year!

This was great Kyle. This re-affirmed all of my understanding and practice on aerodynamics on racecars at a pro-am level in motorsports over the last several years and all the literature i've gone over. This is a great design and hearing it explained so simply from a person who has a very advanced understanding of how it actually works.

Deep, deep respect for the people racing Pikes Peak. I've ridden Pikes Peak on my motorcycle, at a very leisurely pace, that mountain is scary! The other issue for designing the aero for a competitive car is that the air on top of Pikes Peak is a lot less dense than at the bottom. It was very noticeable how thin the air is on top.

Very surprised to see the lack of a gurney flap on the trailing edge of the rear bodywork. He was talking about trying to increase the extraction of air from the diffuser and that seems like the best way to do it in conjunction with the rear wing. Sure you might have to raise the rear wing a bit to keep that laminar, low pressure, air attached to the wing but it would be an excellent addition.
@cliffordbradford8910
@cliffordbradford8910 7 лет назад
You only need gurneys when you're planform limited or you need a bandaid. This is an unlimited car so they can add downforce in less draggy ways. I think from another video the builder basically said they had as much rear downforce as they needed.
@Biffsteki
@Biffsteki 6 лет назад
a gurney flap would probably render the leading edge of the rear bodywork not energizing the low pressure zone of the wing as much by introducing low energy turbulence, and then making the whole setup work less like a full multi-element rear end. Gurneys do not exist on mulit element wings unless maybe on the final element.
@Biffsteki
@Biffsteki 6 лет назад
i guess a gurney flap ELEMENT could have effect but without seeing an actual analysis on how the trailing edge of the body works with the defusor and wing its hard to make any calls tbh.,

can the wheel/wheel spokes be made to act as vanes to draw air from under the car?
@christopherbrooke2142
@christopherbrooke2142 5 лет назад
People make turbine wheels, Mercedes put them on the McLaren SLR, and Pagani put them on the Huayra, but they’re not as effective as you might think. The air they do throw out of the wheel is used mainly as brake cooling

I can't help but wonder what percent of british aerodynamicists are employed by F1. Speaking of F1, I've been wondering why tire compliance doesn't interfere with aerodynamics but suspension compliance does. I learned recently that tire manufacturers don't really like making F1's weird tires, because nothing else uses anything even similar. And speaking of Sauber, I can't help but think that their funny intake design is meant to shrink the effective size of the inlet at high speed to reduce drag.

At the end of the day it's probably like this: there's this list of stuff that you can do to improve a cars handling or aerodynamics and the more you can tick off the list the better. Even if it might not have all the big things checked off it might work as a vehicle, but the more of the big things the car's got together the better the end product/result is.

Awesome video about the aero of this car. I'm just curious, with the less dense air at the top of the mountain, what effect does that have on the overall downforce on a car? I genuinely don't know. Do you lose a significant amount of downforce due to the less dense air or is it negligible to the driver? Also, you were stating about the static ride height, how much would you expect the height to change as you approach top speed? It will be due to the compression of the suspension, of course, but would 5-10mm be expected or is that too much? I have a fascination with the science of aero 😉Cheers
@mitchhifi9192
@mitchhifi9192 2 года назад
Yes the less air density means you can't corner as fast and you rely upon mechanical grip. Spring compression isn't to bad as you have high and low spring compression built into the dampeners, it will go a little bit down but impossible to say how much as you tune the low and high speed compression. Low speed being like cars weight from Aero and corners, high speed being bumps etc.

pretty cool discussion. The wing position relative to the diffuser is similar to the old Toyota and Jaguar IMSA cars. IIRC the IMSA cars back in the day ran a lot more downforce than the FIA cars because a lot of the US races were on tight street courses or speedway infield courses. What would've been interesting is for him to just have noted quickly where the car has features that break the current LMP1/2 aero rules. They may have missed a trick with the low nose Since Pikes Peak unlimiteds are open I wonder whether unsprung wings back and front, side skirts and maybe even fan sucking with some active aero features might be the way to go? This is the only current place I know of where you can basically run anything and I'd love to see somebody really push the configurations.

@Serenelove520

I could understand the part where he said about keep the rear wheel open so positive pressure can build up and increase down force?? I understand how positive pressure can build up in front of the rear wheel, but how does that play into the “increase down force”? Edit: ohhh, I get it! Is it because the air pressure build up in the wheel house would start to lift the car causing a negative down force?

Is downforce measured in kgs?
@Nagby3
@Nagby3 7 лет назад
well a force should be in newton but considering earth gravity, you can use a mass unit to help visualize (so kgforce) or you could define it by a coefficient depending on the drag force, front surface, relative air speed and such
@TheGamingHungary
@TheGamingHungary 7 лет назад
I have somewhat heard about that, it just bothers my mind to use inappropriate units for different quantities.:)
@ASJC27
@ASJC27 7 лет назад
Kgf is just another unit of force. It is not the standard unit of Newton that follows all of the equations but kgf is very common in many practices. Especially useful for talking about downforce since what matters for car performance is the downforce per mass and not the downforce itself.

@BasuSatwik

godtux you mean unsprung aero?
@godtux
@godtux 7 лет назад
yes ! To get the load directly on the tires. May be the road is too bumpy and this add too much unsprung weight. Active aéro could also be interesting.
@BasuSatwik
@BasuSatwik 7 лет назад
godtux unsprung weight isn't a good thing at all. And with such huge aero parts it is a big no no. So active aero is the best but requires lot of research and resources.
@godtux
@godtux 7 лет назад
Well, i wonder how much weight a carbon wing would add to the (massive) whells, hub and disk brake. Might not be so important ? And it could allow a lower spring rate to be used. With the actual heavy downforce, springs must be stiff, and so the right must be rally unconfotable and bumpy...
@BasuSatwik
@BasuSatwik 7 лет назад
godtux the real thing I don't understand about unsprung aero is that once the downforce comes into play the unsprung weight is going to be huge as the speed increases. Isn't that bad for the car? The handling and everything will change by a huge margin.

might not be as worth it as youd expect, i looked around a bit and the best i could find was a 2001 arrow car for $215k +tax. the car also doesnt include an engine, or hydraulic and electric systems. this car wasnt good in its time in f1 scoring only 1 point, and is also at this point 22 years old. i think it would be cheaper and also would allow for a far more free design to just start from scratch
@JulesBrunoJjBaggy
@JulesBrunoJjBaggy 2 года назад
@@carlofrunzio6989 tour de force will sell you a hybrid era chassis with 800hp built by f1 engineers for $850k. I'm not talking about getting on the mountain in a golf with a wing, i think a modern f1 car would smoke this car and probably beat the idr which certainly cost more than 1 mil.
