I definitely would use a visa agent. I am using one just to do a 30 day tourist extension. It is just too complicated and time consuming to do on my own. If I do decide to live here I will give Rhys a call. Great and informative video, thank you, Tony.

Rhys is great to work with! I used his service Assist back when we lived in CM for my marriage based visa one year because the queue system was so hard. I have to say it was so impressive. Went to transfer METV across to new passport at Jomtien. They said they couldn't do it as it was a sticker. Im wondering wether that was not true and an agent would have helped. Anyway I've notified aus embassy and thai embassy in aus so people dont get their holidays ruined like mine and correct information is posted on websites. I find most problems are simply due to poor communication between agencies. The end result is the poor traveller cops the problem.

I'll be visiting Chiang Mai in October, and plan to stop in at Assist to prepare for moving next year around May or June. Set for a retirement visa, so should be pretty clear cut.

Great info Tony. Thanks for taking the effort and bringing in the team for all the info. Visa system in Thai is crazy but one interesting thing that I came across which is not very expensive is Employer of Record (EOR). This is done by special companies that give you a work permit(mostly for remote working foreigners in IT) and after you complete the 3 years in Thailand with that you can easily get a PR. Most of these companies charge a monthly flat fee like Thai Assist for handling the paperwork for all this(taxes, reporting and other stuff) but you can get a work permit without actually hunting or getting jobs there if you have some remote job and that can be extended for 3 years and finally get a PR to stay as much as we want. Not an option for retirees but for people who are not 50 and want to settle long term in Thailand.

Can you guys confirm that Thai bank accounts can no longer be opened with a tourist visa? This means the "old route" of tourist visa-open bank account-obtain 90-day retirement visa (O) visa-extend to one year visa and then renew annually is now closed. Now a Non-Immigrant Visa (retirement) has to be obtained in your home country to enable a bank account to be opened in Thailand. In short the "old route' allowed you to go to Thailand and then transfer funds to the Thai bank account. Now the financial requirements, proof of 65,000 baht income per month or 800,000 baht in bank account for at least two months, have to be in force at time of applying for the Non-Immigrant O in home country.....money up front - not later when in Thailand as before.

A US Citizen coming to Thailand for 30 days or less will get a stamp in their passport at immigration permitting a 30 day stay. There is no charge for this. 🇹🇭😊

My issue is I'm a retired US military veteran married no kids but my age is 46. Wonder if this is an issue as most can retire from the military at an earlier age.

There is definitely an age requirement for the retirement visa, which is 50 and older. Unfortunately, Thailand does not care if you’re actually retired, but they are looking for the age.
