It isn't even that she let it bite her. When I was a kid we used to do that all the time with anoles on our earlobes. The dumb part was that for some reason, she expected it to magically know when she was done with her "look at me" photo and automatically let go.

In fact, that entire chapter deals with the necessity of pairing works with faith for Salvation, and how the works will PROVE the faith you have. Not necessarily to God (Who knows our very hearts and deepest thoughts), but to those you live among, to bear witness of God's great power and mercy and to possibly lead others not only to true faith but to Salvation for them.
