The striated pattern proves that the entropy wasn’t reversed
@femsplainer
@femsplainer 3 года назад
@@sirmorningwood2707 The striations actually prove nothing about entropy being maintained or reversed. As he pointed out that is just a side effect of the way they mixed it. If done properly, the laminar flow would return the liquid back to its original position without striation. In any case the original premise is flawed, because you are not actually undoing entropy by returning the liquid to its original state, any more than melting an ice cube and then freezing it again means that you have reversed entropy. The energy (and subsequent heat) that went into the system to "mix" the liquid was also required to then "unmix" the liquid. As such, the continued entropy of the universe was maintained. That being said, I have long held that the Entropy is a severely flawed theory because if the ball must always roll downhill, then how did the ball get to the top of the hill in the first place? Even if we follow a multiverse theory where our universe splintered off of another universe through an extreme amount of energy focused on a very tiny point (Michio Kaku posited this at least), and assuming that the laws of physics are constant across universes, then you'd still have the problem of explaining how our parent universe got it's initial energy and so on.
@nradicic
@nradicic 3 года назад
the title is a bit misleading - nothing is unmixing, because nothing was mixed - the hint is in the rest of the title "ultra LAMINAR flow" - which means he didn't cross the "streams" and the pockets of dye could be mechanically reformed by reversibly compressing the "stretched" pockets of dye - really only possible because over the timeframe of the experiment, there was so little diffusion of the dye pockets into their surroundings - thus the requirement for a really viscous/thick liquid. The law of entropy always increasing was still demonstrated because the "after" pockets were more distorted than the "before" pockets - because of an increase of entropy throughout the experiment.
@femsplainer
@femsplainer 3 года назад
@@nradicic Well I think that all comes down to what your definition of "mixing" is. Considering that the corn syrup is already homogenized and the only difference is the food coloring, one could say that it is already mixed even before he starts turning the handle.

Wow. The experiment was great but what I found more touching was your explanation of how it compares to life . I myself have been through a lot and struggle to see the light at the end of the tunnel at the moment but you have just given me a light. A reason to keep on trying and keep on believing that with effort and with the write steps we can make things good again instead if staying in a mess and thinking there is not hope. I know it may not make sense what im trying to explain but in short I just want to say thank you. You have given me hope. Things (life paths) can be fixed and can be reversed.

Hey Destin! I watched this video like a year ago - but then today I suddenly had an ‘aha!’ moment as a result! I have this globe on my desk that is suspended inside a plastic globe, and a clear fluid - essentially free-spinning inside the ball. I couldn’t get it to work properly and spin, without going backwards - but it was supposed to just keep going in the direction the earth actually turns. I looked over at it today - and this video came to mind - and it clicked. I needed to spin the outside globe in the right direction to ‘wind up’ the fluids inside - which then pull the interior globe in the same direction. Mind blown. Thanks man!

Hey Destin, I came across something quite interesting recently. I was making hot chocolate and to cool it off I placed an ice cube in the cup. What happened next surprised me, the liquid started to swirl as if I had just stirred it. I found this fascinating enough to where I did it again; on my third time around nothing happened. Assuming it was the heat of the water acting on the melting ice I made another cup and sure enough, it started swirling again. The ice I was using was cylindrical in shape and around 2.5cm. I did this again tonight and decided to measure the variables. At my altitude of 239M above sea level, the temperature of the water had to be no less than 79C, and the ice, if larger than 3.3cm wouldn't produce this effect. The cup was 11cm in diameter and 10cm tall. Now that all of that is on the table, here's my question. Do you know what causes this, or would you be able to help me figure this out? I understand that it isn't very interesting for most, but it is baffling me as to why it happens. Thanks!
@CappeSun
@CappeSun 3 года назад
I belive the ice cube cooling down the liquid causes it to sink and thus creating a swirl. I read about a phenomenon that caused a gigantic ice circle to spin for no apparent reason. It was later revealed that this was caused by the same reason that is affecting your ice cube. Not sure about the variables though.

I'm going with 'Significant discontinuity' on the surface of the cylindrical ice cube. Of course, the cube is melting on all sides, but at a particular point, there is what I imagine to be a linear indentation allowing the melting to be focused and directed in a specific direction, causing the spin.
