Unpacking more boxes and sorting out random boxes of stuff on our minimalist journey. But when I'm done unpacking and decluttering, life feels simple again. Simple living is intentional and purposeful but we still live among boxes in our house. We have less than 30ish boxes left to unpack and decide what to keep, what to donate, what to sell, what and how to declutter.

@@monaminchau4798 I personally would not miss my wedding guest book. Only a few pages were used and the rest of the book was blank. Such a waste. Most people just signed their names, no personal message to make it interesting to read later, and often you couldn't read their handwriting and had to wonder who that was!! LOL

I'll say C: Keep the books on a bookshelf and just have the candles tray and the lamp on the surface. Easier on the eye as the picture wall already attracts attention, and easier to clean when it's time to dust!

My opinion that goes against decorating trends. Books aren’t decor to me, put them away or be currently reading one. It looks messy to me having stacks of books out. Either get a book shelf or a basket to contain them. I also think placing books backwards makes no sense. You need to be able to access them. That’s why libraries arrange books by subject matter with spines facing out.

Ruth Lloyd, you are a woman after my own heart! I don't understand this trend of using books as decor. I like my books on a bookshelf, spines facing out to see the title. I don't see any beauty in buying old books that you have no intention of reading and using them as 'decor' because they are the right colour, as I have seen in many interior design videos. And facing the pages out is just silly, IMHO. ;) No offense intended to you, Erica, as I'm sure the books you have on the table are at least ones that you read. ♥

Ruth, I think the same way. They look messy stacked up, I don’t even have a bookcase. I read a book and then take them to the book exchange where you can swap them for another book.

Picture b but try it with NO books? Empty space is incredible especially with all of those pictures. The books makes your eyes read them instead of admiring all of your beautiful pictures

just an idea. you had 4 "my first year " frames. and 3 of them are a same size. just the one for your youngest isnt the same. When you really want to finish it and then hang them, the 3 same size frames might look better together. :) I love your unpack and declutter series

In my past life I would have said B but since being on this journey with Dawn and the gang I would have to say that I wouldn’t go with either. You have created such a beautiful wall gallery snd everything else apart from the lamp detracts from it - not criticism, just a thought from fellow minimalist still on the journey. More peaceful, calm, visually pleasing and easy to clean (!) without any books! ❤️ love the videos. Sentimental is HARD. I haven’t got to that yet!! X

Don’t know if it’s just how I’m wired or if it’s learned, but I really thought about this when decluttering: what would I be sad about if the whole house burned down (obviously assuming all people and animals got out safely)...I came to the conclusion that I’d really only miss photos and those I have digitally stored in a safe deposit box. So, other than the extreme hassle and inconvenience, I would just be thankful for the life that was preserved. Everything else can be replaced, rebuilt, or just remembered.

Those poor "thirds"! ;) I did the same thing, made baby albums for my first two, and started with my third, but didn't finish. For Christmas when she was out eight, I finally developed her old baby photos and filled her album, and she was so happy... actually, more like I was so happy to have finished, and finally rid myself of that mom guilt! ;)

Definitely B, but because three is more pleasing to the eye than four. And I suppose I personally prefer the spines showing. But I’d put the books in the middle and move the cute tray vignette to the right. The gallery wall looks amazing!! Well done!!

I would also take pictures of the items from wedding and let them go :) If they are just packed away, they are not giving joy. I know it can be difficult to let go of things that are made by others, but even that can be clutter if not used. But I am maybe further along in decluttering and I am enjoying less and less stuff on top of things, inside things or on the walls. You are working hard.

Please don't save things from your wedding to pass onto your children. One program can be kept with your wedding things for them to look at if they want while not placing the burden of ownership on them.

I disagree .I have three adult kids none are married yet .I've kept some of their baby stuff .I don't keep all of their stuff. My mom kept all her wedding stuff, because her mom made her dress in 62 .Sometimes grandkids want to wear their grandparents or parents wedding dress for sentimental reasons .

It's very easy to fall into the trap of what if, maybe, someday. That's how so much accumulates. They do take up space. They also take up time and energy. The wedding was between her and her husband and anything they keep they should want. If their kids end up wanting it, too, even better. If they're saving something just because their kids might maybe, possibly, someday, I'd use caution.

Picture B with one stack of books. Looks neater in my opinion. I like the picture collage on the wall. Great wedding picture. Thanks for another great video. Lots of very good ideas. And always nice to see all that you uncover. I wish to thank those who helped my with picture declutter ideas. I dropped to six bins from 17 bins. I also found out that there is a market for old photographs. Old black and white photos. So I was able to make some money for some family members who needed it by selling the old unwanted pictures for them. Who knew there was a market for that? Lol. I also donated pictures to historical museums in their local towns to help fill out their local history sections and represent the family. Things that only came to light as I was decluttering the pictures. It feels so good to get that done. The family is happy with my choices for keepers and donations. They are all okay with the money they made with the photos too. Thanks everyone. This is a great channel. Thanks Erica for making it possible.

Picture B, it looks less cluttered. Your picture wall turned out beautiful, especially with your wedding picture in the middle. And I like your idea of using part of the tiered tray. Also, I so respect your thought process of where exactly your decluttered items have to go, since I find this chore difficult at times.

My big China hutch is now EMPTY and going to my daughter along with the 8 seater table, matching sofa table, 2 side tables, a coffee table and a roll top desk! I will dance like a mad woman in all the space then move my great grandparents table and buffet into the space. I'm beyond thrilled to empty that huge hutch. Don't fall for it, you will buy to fill!

I liked picture B. And I like what you did with the "tray" with candles and plant. I almost teared up when you said "get this put up today" and there was hubby putting it up "today". I have lots of things I want to get done "today" but can't always get help "today" so I have to be super super patient. Love your channel and the inspiration I get from you. Picture A looks as if the stack of books was put down for a moment and someone is going to school or library. Picture B looks more intentional and decorative. I choose B 📚 which is also how I display my sentimental books. I actually use a stack of hardbound books from my childhood as a monitor stand for my second monitor. Thank you for allowing us into your home and lives and along your journey. You are very inspirational. With the mountain you had before you, Erica you are scaling that mountain with grace, strength and a great sense of humor. I love all the support your husband gives to you and how you can see the true love you have for each other.

i like B better but you should also remove that tray with the candles in it... looks way too cluttered. Maybe just keep the plant but removing it all together would look 100x better

The B photo is best. Also, remove the bins from your basement once they are empty. You will feel better about your decluttered space and less tempted to fill them up again.

I just decluttered (for the third go-round) my collection of sentimental birthday and Christmas cards by taking photos of them and putting them in a cloud album. As the recycling truck came by, I had a few minutes of sadness and loss but that was all! Keeping 3 copies of your wedding programs for your kids is excessive, to my mind! Your kids will NOT want them! It was your memory, not theirs!

Agreed! My mom kept stuff for me of memories like that and tried to give it to me when I started my family. The *last* thing I wanted pregnant was to deal with her old stuff! It took multiple conversations and hurt feelings on her end for her to understand it wasn’t special to me unfortunately.

I also would not save three wedding programs for the kids. You don't want to burden the kids with sentimental. Maybe scan in the program and have a slide show of the wedding that includes the scan.

You make going thru the sentimental items"look"easy. I know it's not. Photos are a huge hang up for me and I'm usually in tears seeing photos I haven't seen in a long time.

The photo wall is the focus. Adding the impersonal decor below takes the focus away from the personal. I would clear everything off the table.

Option B. I think groups of odd items are a design school trick. Lamp, tray stack of books. Move books and tray slightly right to create some open space on the furniture! Nice work on the sentimental items.

I definitely like the picture be better, the one with one stack of books and you can see the spines. Three items on a surface feels nicer, i’ve actually heard that as a tip, and seeing the books is much more friendly and usable and approachable… My vote for sure!

My mother saved the guest book from her wedding and we’ve used it for all our weddings and at their 25 & 50 year anniversaries. It’s a wonderful keepsake

Definitely picture B. I had to stop saying I am saving this for my children. Because honestly they may not care. I save the keepsakes for myself and if one day my children enjoy them great otherwise I wouldn't want to clutter their lives with what they would think is junk.

You reminded me of a comic strip i found hillarious decades ago when i was a child. The baby, probably about one-ish, is crawling past the bookshelf complaining that the parents treat the earlier children better. 6 nicely annotated and aranged photo albums for (eldest child), one slimmer photo album for (second child). Crawls to next part of the shelf, gestures dramatically 'and half a roll of film in the camera for me!'.

Picture B. In decor, objects are generally better in groups of odd numbers, better balance and more restful. Three candles in the tray, instead of four, might look more balanced and less cluttered as well. Love the picture wall, especially how you got it done right off!

Sentimental items are difficult to let go of, but they must not overtake our space. The older we get, the more sentimental items we accumulate. Keeping everything in boxes is not going to be feasible. How about taking photos of cherished items and loading them onto electronic picture frames, for example?

I like even numbers. But will go with B because it looks less cluttered. They say in odd numbers looks better.

I like B. Odd number of items (lamp, tray, 1 stack of books) are more pleasing to the eye.

I like B - it seems less fussy - but to be honest both are an absolutely beautiful use of the space - it's just a charming blessed little corner.

I love looking at the spines of books, so I will choose B. Also, your wedding dress was so beautiful! the lace and applique details on the sleeves are so scrumptious.

I loved Andy's fire face! 😄 Also B. Spines out always. If you want more books out, try bookends instead for a more purposeful look. Most important is that you like how it looks. My natural inclination is to have it completely clear, but the more I get rid of clutter and am actually able to keep surfaces clear, the more I am appreciating the cosyness of stuff that just looks pretty.
