Unpack my reduction fired gas kiln with me! This week, I'm inviting you along to unload my Rohde KG-340 kiln, to see all the thrown and trimmed and glazed pots inside. I also discuss how I tidy the work up the bases of my wares with diamond pads, and how I grind the lids of my jars to a glassy smooth finish. A slower, more considered film, that hopefully demonstrates what it's like unpacking a pottery kiln. Thanks for watching!

When you pulled your book out of the kiln, it reminded me of the time my pottery teacher was giving a lecture on wax resist. She said that if you screw up and wax somewhere you don’t want waxed, the only way to get it out was by re-firing the piece, and that if you spilled any on your shoes, it’d never come out. EVER. One of the students asked, “Not even if you fire them?” The entire class cackled.

After hearing recent comments of you concerning your relationship with making, I purchased your book. It arrived last week, and I am savoring it.

Really enjoyed the focus on unpacking the kiln and bringing us an understanding why you thought certain pieces were more successful than others. As a non-potter, it helps us appreciate another aspect of your craft. Thanks again.

CANNOT recommend the book By My Hands enough! I struggled with reading my whole life (ADHD), and Florian's story is quiet, contemplative, and wholesome. I am nearly done with it-I plan to punctuate it with a purchase of one of his pots after I finish! Another well done video, my friend!

The teapot was lovely, however the pieces with the trapped carbon on the rim, I liked alot. My favourite has to be the angled pot or vase. I look forward to watching you developing this further. The colour difference within the pieces, depending where their placed in the kiln is a magical mystery, please keep doing what you do so that I can continue to enjoy your videos. Thankyou 😊

I love the way that seemingly useless materials can be turned into beautiful and useable pieces of art like this. What an incredible process!

Read your book over Christmas break finding it as enjoyable as your videos. Also a great general primer for a beginning potter. Your channel is a prime example of the positive potential of online media. Cheers!!

There's so many interesting pots and cups and mugs and ceramics that intrigue me to no end in this video alone, let alone your other videos, let alone other potters across RU-vid, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Endless fascination.

The book fired really well in the back i wonder if you cuould brush on a little soot or lamp black on the rims of some bowls or mugs to artifically add some carbon trapping

In a long ago video you mentioned that you really should fire some of your intermediate work product (in that case it was a tall vase after the first trimming left a strong spiral). I would love to see that.

The metallic bowl (one of your five) is my favorite, along with another metallic bowl, the reddish one that was sitting on top of a prop. Absolutely stunning! I love your typical work, but the refires you do blow me away.

I know it sounds weird, but if you have a chopstick (singular), use it to stir coffee in your french press. Less grounds will stick to it and it's actually easier to stir with.

Such a great video for potters. Do you have a video of extensively going over a bisque firing? I have a manual kiln and it scares me 😂

Great video as usual. How long does it usually take you to produce enough pots to fill your kiln ? I feel like there's A LOT of items in there.

You mentioned that there was a bowl that would have been better glazed in the darker green glaze. Have you reglaze pieces first with a glaze and then with another glaze?

once you've made a video of a sanding pad that sticks on top of the wheel head. I was wondering why you still prefer using a standard sanding paper over that sanding pad? also, I'm curious what you do with exceptional pots, such as the carbon trapped examples shown in this video. can you sell them on your online shop as part of your collection or do you need to make for them an individual listing, considering they're different from the product shots? or do you simply not sell them at all?

Curious - What becomes of the melted cones? Are they trash at that point?

More or less. I keep mine, as do lots of potters. In theory you could grind them up to a fine powder and add it back to clay to act as grog.

I was thinking about the bronze filings- if they were much much smaller, would they work like iron oxide does in a slip?
