If you search attentively enough through his writings and videos, you find he says new things relevant to current events. In 2016 I was disappointed that he was not here to discuss the election. People used his videos trashing the Clintons to justify voting for Trump. Recently I've found several videos where he talks about Trump, either implicitly or even explicitly.
Hitchens was such a compelling speaker that I found myself fastforwarding past Isham. Hitchens had an incredible ability to make complex subjects sound interesting. Sadly missed.
@Comrade Sky Ny dear comrade Sir, agree 💯 x a million, Hitch was too brilliant to be confined to any of these so call political denominations, he would have Hitchslap the shit out of the left and right, much to their chagrin, they would have not been able to contain him.
Is this evidence of an intelligent conversation/host on an American news program? :O There's no shouting or talking over guests... What is this strange place?
The peace Prize is little more than political banter, the eu was given the prize for goodness sake and it has literally caused the fall of democracy's and mass poverty. It is a political award, nothing more.
Putting a title like ''sir'' in front of a person's name..doesn't matter...the world is full of gangsters and scumbags with sir in their name...hitchens would of laughed at it...
@shwwnn True. I agree with Christopher Hitchens that the Swedish Academy would do better if they added a Human Rights Prize to the Alfred Nobel Prizes. After all, there are many worthy champions of Human Rights who unfortunately get overlooked by the Nobel Committee because their work does not fit the criteria for the Peace Prize. Unfortunately, I doubt that the Swedish Committee has that prerogative, or would even do anything if they did have it.
The US only got directly involved in WW2 after the bombing of Peal Harbour. Most Americans saw WW2 as a European conflict and wanted no part of it. The US was initially founded as an isolationist country. The founders wanted no direct involvement in international conflicts and thought that each country had to arrive at their own solutions to their own problems.
It Should also be noted that Trump hasn't actually got a plan as to what will be negotiated because Trump says many things. He is just SAYING he wants to negotiate, he doesn't actually know that will happen and has reaffirmed that we will remain in afganistan if the Taliban doesn't agree to a deal which is utter nonsense as we should NOT CARE if they want a deal or not-we should just leave. Let the President of Afghanistan deal with that trash. Its been 18 years, now. Try.p knows full well these people wont negotiate. When he went to visit the troops in Afghanistan Nov 28, the white house press secretary Stephanie Grisham went ahead and assured the press that his meeting with the president was more about the troops than actual negotiation because trump is JUST saying popular things (for the American people). He shoots from the hip, thats who he is. Thats why u cant trust what he says and should instead focus on what he DOES. Since we still have troops there, since he increased drone strikes and loosened the rules of engagement, since he is moving troops around the map-it is therefore safe to say this was just another trump comment not meant to be taken seriously. Like his "I am not a puppet to my donners!" (He took money during the campaign). He is as big a liar as Hillary Clinton.
Honestly, building model boats in a navy bomb shelter sounds like a dream job. Sure, maybe a surface level workshop with fresh air and sunlight would be better, but building model boats for a living? That's just awesome.
They ought to abridge the title of hte award to "Nobel Prize" as peace is not the most desireable of values as it were. I prefer truth, justice, and reason to name a few.
My point was to be objective. I'm not either supporting the act or condemning it outright. You have to look at it in its historical context and not issue condemnations based on personal taste.
Have to totally agree on analysis of Obama’s acceptance of Noble. This “honor” in anticipation that he would one day do something for peace was absolutely inappropriate and silly but was eclipsed by his fatuous acceptance of it.
Indeed, some seem to think that such past irresonsibility allows them to shrike responsibility now. A non-sequitor on a scale which i've never seen before.
But he didn't do that because he isn't a great figure with substance and statesmanship. He's a political opportunist plugged into the authoritarian mode of governance.
once barry accepted the noble prize that prize to me lost all meaning, all value, it was shamful and i will never have the respect for barry or the noble prize as i once did.
"Shaping" Means turning the country's policies so that it economically suits America and the American economy.. never mind the consequences of thousands of slaughtered civilians. But of course in the name of democracy. Hitchens supported the Iraq war not for the reasons underlying which was to shape their oil trade so that it would benefit America
But you are not looking at its historical context. There is no evidence to suggest that Iran would invade. Iran didn't have the ability to invade since their military was crippled. Hussein however had made statements regarding an invasion of Iran up to 6 months prior to the event. He has also made numerous statements regarding creating one Arab State.
They were on the cusp of a religious revolution and after the Ayatollah took power it was safe to assume that such a theocracy MIGHT act aggrssivly. I'm more inclined to give the benefit of the doubt the western democracies than to religious fundamentalists.
There are three things I really admired about Christopher Hitchens. 1. He was very articulate and had a huge library of words to use inside his brain. 2. He was an alcoholic. 3. He could drink/be drunk and still come across as very intelligent/sharp(which is my favorite thing about him.)
CBS SUCKS FOR ADDING DELTA AIRLINE COMMERCIALS! Hitchens, as usual, is brilliant... Commercials on RU-vid will only cause me to avoid those advertisers such as Delta...
Pirates that were attacking American trade ships. Of course you take action against this. When free trade is stopped by international piracy one of your two principles has to give, either isolationism or free trade. By stopping the attacks they sacrificed isolationism temporarily to maintain free trade indefinitely.
@writersblock26 some people think it's a prestigious prize, I think that prize is a joke. they gave it to henry kissinger for goodness sake. Looking at the other people they gave it to (including Obama), they're not trying to hide the fact that it's a joke or care about its reputation. And it's apparent that the prize has not affected Obama's policies. But I agree with you that it's not necessary for him to turn it down. I don't think this whole thing is very important anyway.
Norway (the ones responsible) truly made the worst of what we gave them. it's become a populist, "what's in the news at this very moment"-award. It would be like the literature award was given to the New York Times best seller of the year. It's ashame.
@ChollieD Well, I agree with the first part of your statement, and as much as I respect Christopher Hitchens, I feel he does not fully appreciate the negative political consequences of turning down such a prestigious prize (and it is a prestigious prize, regardless of whether some feel the award has not merited its reputation).
obama said he doesnt deserve it himself.. like hitchens said he probably had to think on the fly like most presidents have to and thats why obama himself feels now he doesnt deserve it or atleast not yet.... i mean granted he has attempted to help but a nobel prize isnt for some help its when peace has been created hence the noble peace prize
@zoobalac sounds like a good pint u made though some actual african that are no longer freezing to death may disagree.. but yeah in general your probably right this country should learn to help itself much more before attempting to do it elsewhere..
The three heads on display are shiny. But you single out Christopher Hitchens. Says everything about you. It's what is inside his head that interests me, and many others. We know what's inside yours.
OMG..he was not a perfect man??!!...you must be perfect!!..I wish I was you!.... hypocrite judger!!...he was an intellectual genius...your comment makes obvious you are NOT!!
