I know right, but she stronger than skinny/slim girls so those girls need to watchout and not have a tone 😂 But yeah, she's definitely insecure about men. Cause no matter how strong she gets, she can't take on a man of any stature
We do, but most ppl are too shy to ask. I also left my rack to help someone next to me with deadlift form. Calm down matta6593 😂 it's one "powerlifter" don't make us all guilty by association.
Not everyones goal is strength either. For those going for hypertrophy full rom with controlled reps and really feeling that muscle get destroyed is what matters. Weight is irrelevant.
The fact that they feel the need to “feel” something by comparing themselves to others means they’re not happy with themselves. That they live off of others opinions of them, instead of their own. And if they see this or anyone like that sees this, just do it to be better than how YOU used to be. No one else. People’s journeys are different, along with their genetic make up. Only strive to beat your previous self.
Everyone lifts with different goals. As a sprinter, I cannot bulk up without reducing my athletic performance so I do not lift for hypertrophy. Others want to bulk up. Each has its own place and is simply different, not better or worse.
That's a bad attitude she has. As weightlifting coach, I can be a dooshbag and say "olympic weightlifters are better than powerlifters", but I don't think this way. Because our purpose in life is to lift others, not to have an elitist attitude and bring others down.
I agree. As a PL there is alot of tension between us, but i personally know some olympic lifters and i myself use CJ and snatches at times since they are great to develop explosive power and i wouldnt be able to perform them without the tips from them. Same as I show the my technical details when they do deadlifts for general power. Better to learn from each other than harass and slander
@@knagen exactly bro!! Thanks for the feedback. And believe it or not, I also use PL techniques I learned from West Side to help my lifters get really strong.
I taught this lesson to my daughter at five. Unless you win the gold in the Olympics, there is always someone better than you. So just be the best Miriam you can be and don't worry about what others can and cannot do.
This is so true. And even then, there is probably someone better than you. They just haven't had the opportunities to compete and go to the Olympics. So everyone should stay humble.
I have a mixed group at my gym. Some older folks, like me, but also some young people. Even high school kids, I've noticed. And different body types, as well; some really fit individuals, and some people just starting out who are overweight and soft, and every type in between. The thing is, we're all friendly and none of us judge or shame anyone else. I love my gym!
It's strange though... I'm leaving this comment as a former powerlifter. Some of us are a weird bunch. Powerlifting becomes our identity and it seems like the world revolves around making 45's clang together. At the same time we're some of the most kind and helpful people in the gym. This girl probably entered one powerlifting meet, she was the only one in her division and won a trophy.
I used to know a female powerlifter who once told me that she would silently mock guys that lifted less than her and then she asked if I did the same. I was like..why would I do that? I don't know where they are in their lifting journeys. She was kinda quiet after that.
@@someguyik I just entered my 50's and the lifting culture for me has been to ALWAYS be positive in the gym. Everyone in the gym is giving it an effort and everyone should be encouraged. This new culture of ripping on people while recording has to stop. It's nice we have people like Joey calling it out 👍🏻
I see videos like this as a reaching out for help. Being in a lonely place is not a fun place to be. The GYM is not a lonely place like social media. The gym is supposed to be the opposite of everything that social media has become. Put the phone down. Look somoene in the eye. Make a freind. Change your life. Lift with the heart! ♥♥♥♥
Hate to say this every single video but the entitlement in these times is not only astonishing but disturbing.. it’s absolutely ludicrous. Come on people wake up and act better already!
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. - 2 Timothy 3:1-7
I was doing bjj for 8 years in my mid to 40s to early 50s, got a purple belt. One day a very fit and strong young lady came in, she was a personal trainer, and had a bit of arrogant attitude. I'm 5'9" 165lb dude, she was about the same size, muscular, 25 years younger, had much better cardio. After our training session ended, I was totally exhausted and one of the coaches asked me to do a light role with her. Dare I say I had no issues with her strength, didn't want to humiliate her but also showed that being humble only makes people to respect you more. Unfortunately she didn't show up after this session.
Lifting heavier weights with proper form means you are stronger than another person lifting lighter weights with proper from. The water is made of water and when 60 seconds pass in africa 60 seconds pass around the world
That is not how powerlifting works it's about encouraging each other and helping and watching people from all walks of life get a personal al record. I have trained with some of the best lifters who have worked records and most were at regular gyms or all in one places. It does not matter if you are maxing out with 100 or 800 encouraging each other needs to be mandatory. Plus I am not better than anyone cause I powerlift. I'm just fatter jk.
It's impressive when you see a strong person at a gym. Everyone has different goals and some people play a sport where lifting weights isn't a priority. You can do all kinds of comparison. For example, she maybe be strong and can out lift the average person, but there's gonna be a person that can run 5 miles no problem while she struggles with maybe just a mile or two. Then there's someone who looks skinny and weak, but actually have 6 years of boxing experience and can knock you out if they wanted to. See where I'm going with? Trying to hype yourself up and thinking you're better than others is silly and insecure. No doubt, being confident is a good thing, but there's a different between being confident and cocky.
Don't tell me, she goes to a CrossFit gym and lifts plastic weights? Just because you have a powerlifting belt doesn't make you a powerlifter. Plus, I know women who are not powerlifters squat more than her.
I've seen women squatting 205 for reps and they are way smaller than her. They both weigh in between 120-130 lbs and very athletic but they don't go around acting like they're better than anyone. Cool and humble ladies.
My only competition was me, not others, unless of course you're taking part in a competition, that said I always helped others and appreciated others who offered to help me. This woman needs to learn what the word humble means...and yes, she really does need to do better!
I powerlift in a mostly conventional gym and I love when one of the guys I became friends with a 280kg deadlift or the strongmen with 100kg log presses come in because it reminds me that while I'm sitll pretty strong, in the grand scheme of things I ain't shit
I don't think that's what she was saying. It actually sounds pretty humble to me, like she is way under average at the powerlifting gym and here she is *slightly* above average. I feel good too when I go to a gym where I'm relatively strong, not because I think I am better but because it puts a different perspective on where I am. Most of the time I compare myself with stronger people around me or with me at my peak when I last PRed..
Ok, why do you feel the need to compare to other's? Why not compare to your chart and prior lifts? As pointed out many times on this thread, not everyone has same goals. So you feel better if you see a "newbie" with half the weight you use? Or someone who is a sprinter trying to add a little muscle and not bulk out? You can't get a perspective without the full story of each individual. Honestly.
@@kennethkonjura4418 Everybody compares to others. You are only "strong" in a relative sense. No, I don't feel better if I see a "newbie". I do feel better if I'm lifting more than 90% of a gym, it is just a bit comforting that I didn't waste years of work. Gains for me always came very slow. And I'm always happy to help someone who is new with their form or technique if they ask.
@@kennethkonjura4418 In any case, the point here is that Joey chose the most negative interpretation of the original post and shamed the poster here. I saw this before where the post was clearly a joke that Joey didn't get. Joey - you need to do better. Mind your own business! haha
no matter how strong, smart, good looking, rich, etc. there is always someone or will be someone better than you. What is most important is how good you are
I hope more powerlift influencers go to a commercial gym with this attitude, just so an old boomer whos been lifting since they were a teenager can humble tf out of them without them even realizing it's a competition 🤣
I appreciate this content, not sure if it is similar for anyone else, but serves as a great ego check for myself, I gotta stay more humble. Thank you Mr. Swoll!
The gym’s a dangerous place if you don’t respect it. I’ve been humbled many times getting cocky. I could be wrong & there’s always exceptions regarding the few running around with screws loose, but I don’t forget where I came from. I was a big kid that a few saw potential in, but I was a weak fat kid by comparison to others. In my mind I’ll never be as big or as well built as those guys. Have you tried the monohydrate by Garden of Life laced with the Subtilis Strain? There’s no going back, problem’s solved… Pure Gold Joey 👍🏻 I go Ancient Nutrition for my probiotics, ULT has specific strains for sport relatable complications. Just a word to the wise.
i dont think she meant it in a negative way, I think she just meant that at her gym she's not very strong but going to a commercial gym she would be perceived as very strong I don't train in a commercial gym for the same way, but it's something that I definitely understand.. when I'm in a weightlifting gym I am most definitely nowhere near the strongest, but in the commercial gym I'm at, I haven't seen anyone pushing as much weight as me at all I don't compare myself to anyone though or think anyone lifting less than me isn't as good as me, no one else is training the same as me so I wouldn't even compare them in the first place & I have at times seen people squat & commended them on their technique & positioning, one guy particularly at my gym has an absolutely beautiful looking squat with perfect positioning and extreme depth and even though i don't compare myself to the others at the gym... part of me does feel pretty nice inside knowing I'm one of the beasts of the gym, I assume there would be at least a few others but I haven't seen them yet I saw one guy squatting 117.5kg which is the strongest I've seen someone else do & no one ever deadlifts in my gym for some reason I think in weightlifting you don't really ever have the mind set of comparing to other people based on what they are lifting, you are constantly competing against yourself to beat your own previous bests & usually people are in admiration of others technique, sometimes someone will fluke amazing technique for a lift & at those moments everyone watching has a "PHWOAAAAAR!!!" moment where they all clap and cheer etc. Weight classes are a big thing too, if you're in the same weight class as someone you train with then there might be a bit of comparison but it's in a really good way & only really if you're sharing a platform with them as training buddies, which is the best when you got someone to train with like that imo I train solo now & send vids of my lifts to my coach for my coaching these days, can't afford the better gyms sadly :(
Joey -i guess- could also outlift and outperforme many of the People he critiques in this shorts. BUT he never does. He also has the right legimate reason and dont drop on their Level. Big respect.
I've just started going to the gym (at 53) and I'm conscious that I'm not lifting anything like as much as I probably should. However, my trainer delighted with my form and tempo. These people need to realise that they've got no idea what's going on with other people - that's why, as Joey says, they should "mind their own business".
It's funny you posted this one. I just had someone today ask why I don't bench more weight. My reply was I could throw 405 on and put it up 3 times, but I don't feel the muscle working. With 315x15 I can feel the muscle working. Max strength isn't my concern. Rounding and building muscle is.
I'm not trying to hurt myself. Recovery would be very slow at my age. My goal is to fight the ravages of gravity, keep everything toned. I'm not impressed or inspired by show offs. The 75 year old lady at my gym who jogs five miles, up hill on a treadmill, four times a week, impresses. Narcissist are everywhere. The gym is no exception. I find it's best to ignore them.
Eh. I think people are missing the point of her post. She's sharing that she's surrounded by people that are STRONGER than her and FEELS discouraged in her own journey. She's probably stronger than the average person of her age, size and gender but it doesn't seem like that. She didn't say better than them in general terms. She meant stronger physically. She said "slightly above average", technically it can be argued that this means 84th percentile. She probably means it more colloquially, above 50%. If you read the bottom She says " just to feel something". Joey, love your videos but I think this was an unfair response. I also don't know any context about anything else in the video or her other content. And yes, she should deal with this insecurity. This is her attempt to. Also, COMPARISON is used in therapy for this kind of situation. It's part of DBT ACCEPTS skills. Anywho, my 2 cents. Keeping putting in that work you all. Love the positive content from Joey.
@@warriorwarrior4958 I am asking to elaborate your point. If you say SHE FEELS BETTER because SHE LIFTS MORE THAN OTHER PEOPLE, what is the difference with what Joel says ? Hint : uppercases ;)
A few years ago, I was getting my swamp cooler ready for winter. I didn't notice that the half of the roof that wasn't exposed to the sun was covered in frost. I slipped off and fell two stories. The next 3 months, I was pretty much bedridden and my muscles atrophied quite a bit. That is what got me going to the gym, wanting to rebuild myself. It took some times, especially my left leg that I broke during the incident. It was a little embarrassing to do leg extensions with half the weight that a girl would do, but three years later, I am stronger than ever. Point of the story, you never know a person's health challenges which limit them. You might be smugly comparing yourself to someone with muscular dystrophy or other debilitation.
Personally, I always look at it as just because you are stronger doesn’t make you smarter, just because you are smarter doesn’t make you great looking, just because you are great looking doesn’t make you athletic. Every person has a strength and flaws to work on. No need to point out other people’s flaws when you have plenty yourself.
The strength makes me better argument is something I don't understand, some people train for endurance and others train for mass. Not everyone has the same goal.
Most people going to ANY gym are out of the norm by doing so, but a LOT of people working tough physical jobs are likewise strong, and a lot of people who can’t fit a gym into their routine are providing for families with sweat equity, even if it’s a too-sedentary occupation. Maybe people want to level up their understanding of how complicated real life gets before imagining some “average” they’re beating purely in their own heads. That level of empathy and sophistication of thought process seems all too rare online.
When you join a federation like USA Weightlifting, you sign off on an acknowledgement that you are an ambassador for the sport. I would assume that USA Powerlifting does something similar. So here's my opinion (unpopular, or not): athletes in the strength sports should work out in commercial gyms from time to time to share their passion for their sport and try to bring new people into it.
I'm sorry but I don't get the hate here. She's not claiming to be better than anyone, just that she is stronger than the average gym goer, which is factual and true. But at no point in the video did she say that this makes her better than them. Also, she is filming respectfully and she's not belittling anyone: you could argue that having to compare yourself to non-powerlifters to feel good about yourself is a bad mentality, but that's her problem. As long as she's not bothering anyone or filming strangers I don't see how this would be a problem for the community
Tbf to her, it didnt really sound that condescending, and there's some truth to what she said. If you've ever been to a powerlifting gym, it affects your perspective towards lift numbers quite a bit. And yes, youre above average in lift numberd in any commercial gym. And since the sport in literally about comparing numbers even on large platforms, i dont see a point in blaming a young'un just for doing what everyone is doing.
It's ok being a power lifter but most people go to a gym to either get fitter or put muscle on to get bigger. It doesn't matter how strong you are. It's how your muscles react to your strength threshold and what exercise works best for you 💪
lifting more weight does not make one better than another. The person lifting more weight may have incorrect technique or form. If that person did a proper rep or set, then he or she might lift less.
Yes has to stay unpopular, the unearned entitlement is crazy. The continent champion helped me a lot when I started and he was such a big brother to me
If you have to go to a commercial gym to “feel above average” occasionally, chances are, you are below average most of the time. How does that sound now?
Unpopular Opinion?: I 💯 agree that the amount you lift doesn't make you better or worse than anyone, but ngl I don't think the OP meant it that way. They used the word "slightly" which I read as "At my powerlifting gym I feel like I am weak sauce, but sometimes I need a reminder that my base is a little above average." May just be trying to rest their perspective a bit. I do BJJ and would probably be a high level blue belt or even at my purple if I showed up consistently enough. Have plenty of nights when I feel like I wanna quit because of the constant beatings. But when I roll with white belts/new blue belts and I understand I am a better fighter then most people walking the street, it puts things in perspective for me. Not saying anything about them or their skill. Just acknowledging my journey.
Everyone needs to do better! Making your entire life/ identity/ personality about your gym/ workout/ diet, is crazy! Don't these gym people have any other interests , other than talking about their protein intake and workout regimen? Who cares?
come on, some people need some validation from others for many different reasons. is that really going to hurt other people? They just want to impress people. I think it's an innocent insecurity. I'd certainly be impressed if a powerlifter came to my local gym.
It only proves that she has no self confidence and would rather make fun of those she deems as weaker than her to make herself feel better. Its bully behavior even when there isn’t a target
people should train however they choose whether it is powerlifting, bodybuilding, calisthenics, yoga, etc. No category is better than another. As long as one is happy and satisfied with themselves and they encourage other people to do what they think is best for them then who cares am i right? We are all in the same community.
I don’t really see any problem with this one tbh. She didn’t say “better than” she said “above average” in the context of lifting weights… which she probably is.
@@ethanparker7900 she isn’t cocky, it’s a fact that she’s “above average” and using the term “above average” is modest if anything. Also, how is she being selfish?
@@nerojay2105 are you that naive? She is above average and thats great but everyone is at different levels in their fitness journeys and boasting about it like that seems a bit arrogant to me because fitness is the type of community that should allow all people to train how they please without being put down by people who try to show off.
@@ethanparker7900 she didn’t put anyone down. She SIMPLY said she felt “slightly above average”. If the standard for “going too far” or “boasting” about your fitness journey is saying you feel slightly above average, the fitness scene is obviously WAAAAY too sensitive.
I ride motorcycles off road. Bulking up through powerlifting would hurt my performance. I think she should come ride with us to make me feel above average.. 😂
