Unreal Engine 4 & 5 - Take Recorder demo - record physics animation

Quickly record physics on an object so you don't need to hand animate your object - let gravity can do for you! This is a simple example that can open your eyes to a tool that can be a great time saver! Take Recorder will create keyframes of the animation, which you can then apply to your object in your level sequence.
NOTE: This demo assumes you've got some basic knowledge of UE already - if not, check out my Jumpstart tutorial on this same channel... and also the sequencer video... then come back here for this one!

Super Alternate Button Pressing Order Tip!: My fellow UE Fellowship "fellow" Brendan Carroll mentioned you can also press play, then pause real quick - then start the take recorder recording, then unpause and capture the dynamics. You'll get some head room on the beginning of the action that way, in case that is useful too - and trim out what you don't need. Thanks, Brendan!

Just wanted to thank you. I used this same idea to try and capture a Chaos Vehicle I rigged up and animated using the Car Game mode. Sure enough. I can apply the animation clip to the original blueprint in Anim mode so that the wheels spin and turn and the car cambers/leans and use together with the Transform keys so the car actually rotates and translates correctly. Same concept.. just on a more complex asset and it worked. Saved the day honestly. 🤘😎🤘

I enabled physics on a car and first recorded a "jump". Then I put that animation in a different scene so the car behaved differently as it interacted with other objects in that scene.

You are an amazing tutor!!! thank you for the effort you put into this! I have been struggling to enable collision in sequencer my characters are always going through the tables and chairs; even having a character walk up a ramp is impossible for me because the character goes through it and not on it! can you please help with that I kind of reached a dead end!

So I spent the better part of a day trying to understand the vehicle destruction videos from the Matrix demo, but seeing this really brought the idea home (I think). Correct me if I'm wrong, but essentially I could do a take record of multiple cars and the physics that make them crash individually, and then "paste" the XYZ for each actor into a new sequence?

thanks , very helpful . but when i want to using Take Recorder to record cloth simulation , it does not work , the cloth mesh not take effect when play in sequencer.

Thanks, I didn't think this was possible! Just wondering if anyone else is having issues with 5.0.2/3 where take recorder is recording more objects than requested? I've only set 1 object as a source, but take recorder is recording Camera Cuts, my camera and subsequences into new recordings (which creates a bit of a mess).

Is there a way in UE to press play on the game, run around and do stuff, and have that whole session recorded where you could go back and put in cameras on the replay to make a shortfilm?

hi, i tried to do the same with the ue4 manequin , i opened an animation, and played the run on LOOP,, i selected hip bone, and i presse record but it asked me to createa new file. do you know if theres a way to avoid this? so it could just overwrite the existant anim its being played/recorded. im thinking on some kind of tool that allows to update animation on every loop, so you can keep adjusting new bones and make a kind of motion capture with mouse ( of course only for single bones, or IK controls) , specially with VR that will be a game changing to prototype animations. TVORI VR does that, but still not released.

Really appreciate your content! I have some questions as I was using live link to make my metahuman track my facial expression. I've been researching but haven't found any solutions. I was wondering if you do private sessions to help solve specific problems on unreal engine. thx!

help. I put a character on a motorcycle or car and record it with take recorder, but a problem occurs. It's normal in the preview screen, but when I render it, the bikes and cars are not displayed correctly, and I'm having a lot of trouble with just the character. I have physics turned off when rendering, but it doesn't look right. I would like to know how to solve it so that it renders correctly.

thank you for this amazing tutorial! I would like to know if it's possible to render it in the movie sequencer? When I'm trying to render this, it plays the game and starts to simulate and doesn't consider my baked animation.

Yes indeed, you can do that. Once the recording is done, you wanna turn off physics for that asset. It's a little messy from there, but now in your content browser you'll find a cinematics folder that recorded your object's action. Then, into your "real" level sequence, you add a "subsequences track" and grab the take-recorded level sequence in the cinematics/takes/date folder (depends on your naming conventions where it is...). Sorry, it's a bit bumpy of a process... keep kicking tho, you'll find it :)

Dear JC - would you know how i can add a chaos fracture simulation on the sequencer ? I have been looking for a week now with no luck and that was how i stumbled on your tutorial. I tried recording my fracture but of course it did not work. But i am quite at my wits end how to trigger my fracture not with game play by hitting the play button. any advice is much appreciated :)

5:10 how do I do multiple objects? Like running into a newspaper stand and a bunch of papers fall out, like 50 items? Going back and forth between sequencer, level sequence, and take folders is a headache and nightmare!!!? has to be another way....

Hi there. I'm spawning a blueprint of people every 3 seconds that "walk" along a spline. I'm trying to have the spline path packed with the queues of walking people before my actual sequence has begun recording. I thought the Take Recorder could help me record the people way past the point where they get to the end of the line and use the parts of the recording where the path is already full of moving people in my sequence. I can't get it to record the spawned people though - Or get the people to start spawning at -200 frames in my sequence so that the paths are already full of walking people when my actual needed frames arrive. If I'm making any sense. This has had me scratching my head way too long. Thanks for all the brilliant work on your tutorials - I think I've watched everyone of them the last week.

Hello! Thanks for the tutorial, I just have one question tho, is it possible to bake the animation of the chair to get just an animation file and use it in the world without a sequencer? I would like to spawn it with a blueprint :) Or maybe take a record of multiple mesh at the same time and convert it to an animation linked to a skeleton mesh? I don't really how it works :/

I wasn’t sure either, but did a lil test… you can rt-click and export the chair (or whatever) from sequencer as an fbx, and check the animation options too. Then import that export as an animated fbx asset, and it’ll seem to do what you want… lemme know?

Thanks a lot for your reply, I did some test too and sadly exporting/importing the mesh doesn't give me the animation and also I couldn't find a way to export multiple mesh or record multiple mesh at once and link them together :/ Just to explain, I have multiple cube with physics on that attracted to a "black hole", i would like to conver that situation to a single animation (to have a much more optimized scene), I wonder what can I do for that

I'm using City sample vehicles but after capturing with take recorder, wheels stay in place while the chassis moves.

I'll open the scene and confirm later but I think it is likely a blueprint and while it is capturing the motion of the mesh, the data isn't getting to the wheels thru the blueprint to spin them... may need to get a bit trickier on that one...

Why don't you simulate physics directly in sequencer? Just drop your spher into sequencer as an actor, add static mesh component to the binding object and body instance > simulate physics property to the component, set key frames when you want your simulation to start and end. Now by default if you click play button on sequencer simulation will not run, you have to go and click 3 dots beside the play game simulation button on top of your screen, some option will drop down, you have to set it to simulate, then if you click play button on sequencer, simulation will start.

That is possible too, but you won't have control over the motion from sim to sim. The prupose of using take recorder is so you can capture the animation - kinda like mocap - and then be able to make slight changes if needed, and then have the same animation play back every time (or make changes per supervisor notes). Basically for the flexibility. But you are correct, if you don't need specific control over an animation, you can just let it run in sequencer - thanks for adding that option!

does it only work for static meshes ? or can it be work on a movable player object something like a car ? ı mean my goal is the click play button and driving the car via blueprints, then ı am gonna use this motion in sequencer.

Yup, that should work, just put whatever you want recorded in the source field of the take recorder.

Probably put it in the level sequencer, then use movie render queue (or legacy render)!

@@tarekwayne9193 yea. Its not laid out like u'd think , you know "export fbx" . Its something a bit stupid and fiddly. It was in sequencer, im sure it was the first drop down menu. A great super advanced australian youtuber caled aiden , im sure he talked about it. Very good channel.

The take recorder will not record at 30fps. The most non intuitive recording system on earth, Ive never been more frustrated with a recording platform
