How is everyone doing in the RPG Series?!! 😁 On the other day's poll you guys got me impressed by the majority following the series were already in the last episode, that's so crazy! In the next episode we will add a sort of "combo" system to the AI, so that he doesnt's spam the same attack anim, as that was just temporal.

In case anyone runs into the issue where the print strings do not appear to work at all, you may have inadvertantly disabled print messages in game. While running the level press the ` key. Just left of 1 on the keyboard. Then enter: ENABLEALLSCREENMESSAGES.

Wasn't expecting another video from the series til the weekend. However, you absolutely made my day with the video upload today! I'm enjoying this series heavily and for the range attack for the AI, we talking guns right??? I got a nice robot mesh for my enemies and would love to have them melee with a sword for example and from distance with a gun!

For those who facing an issue where the animation montage isn't playing, remember to add a "default slot" before the output pose in the AI's animation Blueprint.

I had the issue that after the delay node in the attack task, the task did not finish (checked with print debug, but after delay nothing is executed) and the BT does not reset, so the enemy attacks once and than stops attacking or chasing. I guessed the delay is longer than the task execution itself (not sure yet how all that stuff works exactly). When i erase the delay inside the attack task and put a sequence instead the attack task, with a wait task after the attack task than it works. With a custom wait task i guess i can passthrough the animation duration to that task, but i wanted to know, if i made any mistake to avoid that issue at all, cause i have no clue what i did wrong?

Can you show how to make AI to get back to its default location if PLayer steps outside the NavMEshVolume or make AI blind for few seconds so it goes patrolling back. Ai just stands and looks at you)

Thanks for this series Gorka! I always wanted to get into game dev and you are helping me greatly. Been a dev for 15 years and have been learning a lot from your guides. But part of me thinks this is really not that great, performance wise. I cant see blueprints being that good in the grand scheme of things. I am still early in the series, but do you plan to put some stuff into cpp?

Hey thanks, this series will remain in blueprints as it is also targeted towards beginners. But honestly blueprints performance have improved a lot through the years, and they are not that bad as people think, but yeah c++ would be more ideal

You're one of the best content creator when it comes to explain how to learn Unreal Engine 5. Do you have a course of your own to purchase it for full length tutorial on how to make a game from scratch? If not, can you recommend some tutorials that helped you learn how to make a game in Unreal?

@@ArezX3 Laley is good but I would check the comments depending on which tutorial you intend to follow as many of his videos don't account for the differences in Unreal Engine 5 so will teach some bad practice at points. I have had to fix myself anything I have followed from him.

Having trouble here, the ai will attack me and had the knock back from the attack but the actual animation isn’t playing though everything I can see seems connected right? Any suggestions?

@@westonshorts912 Yo, back in episode 20 theres a blink and youll miss it kinda deal. Go into the ABP_AI and make sure there is a "default slot" between locomotion and the finish pose. This fixed it for me

Why does the service not set the boolean to false? I've followed it and thrown in logs, the service only runs when the player is within range.

my enemy doesn't return to roaming after i get out of the navmesh area, and if im in a place where it can't reach inside the navmesh area it just gets stuck between idle and roaming and doesn't move from its spot, until im near it again and then he continues to chase me, but i want it to return to roaming if it cant reach me.

I have noticed the same. On startup, he doesnt move an inch, as though he thinks he's already in range. Then, after I get away from him, he does a random patrol, then a wait, then he's back to thinking he's in range and attacks the nearest wall. I believe our code is correct, but there should be some condition that make the enemy say 'If, on begin play / first condition , i dont see any player then i will random patrol'. I'm glad to see I'm not alone on this, and I'll see if I can figure it out.

Around 02:00 in the video, when I click on "save", unreal engine seems to be stuck on that screen. I've waited for a long time but it doesn't create a service or anything. I've tried it multiple times. Can someone help me with it please? Anyone had a similar problem?

If anyone is experiencing the same issue I found a way to fix it. Just change directx12 to directx11 from the project settings

Hey first thing I wanna say is THANK YOU for all your tutorials!! It's helped me a lot but I am having an issue with this one... The AI is attacking as soon as he sees me but not running to me first and once he reaches me he stops attacking and just chases me until he loses sight of me and then when he sees me again he just chases me without attacking. I can see that he is stuck in the behavior tree at the "Simplified Parallel" section of the behavior tree. Please if you or anyone reading this has the same issue and/or knows how to fix it I would be forever grateful!!

*FIX* I found the issue... At 4:22 In the BT_Task_GetDistanceToTarget I accidently put a "Greater than or Equal To" But I should have put a "Less than or Equal To" node which this gets the "MeleeAttackTargetDistance" and so basically it was backwards which made the enemy think it was in range when it wasn't and not in range when it was...

so iv noticed if i use the third-person starter map the AI works fine, however if i put it into a new map the AI doesn't move at all even with the navigation mesh, im not sure if this is addressed later on in the series but i have a feeling your not aware of this problem, its strange iv done everything else in a different test map and have had no problem its just this ai system seems to not like working in my own test level any advice or help is much appreciated

What are the floors made of in your own test map? You may have to add invisible overlapping 'walkable" geometry to your world so the AI navigation mesh can assign pathing.

@@0rokami made of the same basic meshes as the third person starter map, iv now just started making copies of the third person test map remove the unwanted meshes and start from there, no problems getting the ai to work when I use the third person starter map as the base of other maps. That all said il take a look and see if I can test what you have suggested thank you

I am trying to figure out the issue with the animation not playing.Everything is connecting fine and the settings the same with Gorka's.I have also the default slot in the the ABP_AI. When I test it, everything runs fine blueprint wise,but it doesnt play the animation.Like it cant run the attack function or play the animation montage. Its driving me crazy the last 2 days because I cant see where is the problem. I know that it attacks because I have put a print string in the AttackTarget BT_Task

@ruserious969 yes,just redo it. From scratch. I mean from the duplication of the character blueprint. I did the same things with my first attempt and it worked.

I found the problem. check in "BT_Task_AttackTarget" that you have the controlled pawn going to the attack function and not the owner controller

I am having an issue where if I or the AI gets hit mid attack the animation wont reset and the melee attacks no longer work. Is there a something additional I need to add to the attack system BPs?

@@jagolawgaming3377 I added the "Stop Combo" function from the attack system component to the health change/damage function. This resets the combo to the first attack in your array whenever your character or the AI is damaged. Sometimes it acts buggy for whatever reason but has worked pretty solidly so far.

Alot of these buggs people get is becouse they dont do the same as you. Maybe forgot drag something etc. Keep in mind to do the same as gorka if you want it to work :)

Hello Gorka. As always, a great video. It provides a lot of inspiration for my upcoming projects. - Among other things, I am now finally tackling my "Winter Wonderland" project. Originally, I wanted to create a special kind of Christmas residence for my ex-wife and me as part of my graphic and design studies. Since we are unfortunately no longer together, the idea is now to make a kind of RPG in which, for example, there is a catastrophe in the valley in which the whole thing is set, not a zombie attack, in which the character then has to fight his way with his neighbours to the next larger town. But now I'm stuck on character creating and I'm looking for a way to do something innovative. Could you please be so kind as to make a few videos as part of your RPG series that show how to create a basic framework for something like this that can certainly be expanded later. I think that could also be interesting for others.

Ok, so I think I found out why. Try changing the Melee Attack Distance to something like 100. If the attack range is high and if you run away but are still in that range, it will keep playing it. I could be wrong but it seems to work a bit better

I think i found out the problem. Try to put a small delay (i tried with 1.5 and 0.8 and It works much better) in the Chase target task, on AI move to, linked to on success.

I have the same issue, the AI will just keep running and spamming attack no matter how much I change values.

I've watched this 3 times to make sure I have everything set correctly, and the BP_AI just runs up to me and keeps trying to walk through me without attacking at all. It eventually puts itself in a position where it loses sight and runs away.

@@HlghV0LTag3 My responses don't appear to be applying. It might be because I'm trying to share a link to imgur. Basically, in the ABP for your RPG character, the AnimGraph shows "Main > Slot 'DefaultSlot' > Output Pose". The issue I had was I didn't copy that default slot over to the ABP_AI.
