I went to Beloit College in the 1980s. We had one biology professor who wore a Mao suit, in class in 1985. Another was also a communist and every year would go to communist Nicaragua and "pick coffee in solidarity" with the commies. Yes, these "concrete-heads" (as they say in German) existed. Three years before communism fell in the USSR.

Michael handled it well, but this was bizarrely contentious for no real reason. It's clear the interviewer lacked a basic understanding of Michael's position and seemed to obsess over nit-picky nonsense. TLDR: Do your homework, you hack.

I don't like hosts who try to appear more informed than their guests. I remember when Michael was asking for recommendations for personal accounts from the era in question. And then the host goes on and on about corrupt sources that Michael didn't use. And Michael sat politely waiting for him to finish his self-serving inaccurate rant. Yes, he brought up one name - but Michael clarified that for the incident he used her information, he also had cross references. In the end, it was good that Michael had a chance to verify is sources - but the host could have asked politely for Malice to do so.

Michael, Reagan was famous because he made a joke on a live mic about nuking Russia. He gave us "Star Wars," SDI. I am not saying you are wrong about him, but I lived through that era and I voted for Reagan in 1984 and I don't remember it that way that Reagan said he would not use nukes. He also had some real hawk advisors.

I was never "imprisoned in my house" during Covid. I live in Minnesota. The worst part was when they demanded that restaurants act like a Stasi police and take our vaccine IDs and take our names - which lasted about three weeks in 2020. That was authoritarian. But I was never not able to leave my house. Not once.

@jaybee557

I live in Melbourne, Aus - the lockdown capital of the world. We endured approx. 7 months of sever lockdown - only ‘allowed’ out for one hour per day of exercise and for essential food shopping. Playgrounds were cordoned off, police monitored parks and issued fines if your were ‘caught’. Schools completely closed in favour of online learning, cafes all closed …etc. etc. It was horrendous. Lots of people suffered loneliness and depression. All of this done in the name of ‘stopping the spread’, which it never did!

I respect this guy’s opinions. But he’s way too optimistic about where we are as a country. I understand a lot of people immigrate here from worse situations and therefore America seems like heaven. There’s no doubt in my mind, that the political leaders on the left especially since 2020 have been authoritarian. It may not be the Soviet or China yet but that’s we’re headed unless we stand up and do something about it before its too late. Again, I respect his opinion but I’ve heard and spoken to people who used to live under authoritarian regimes and they’ve said that a lot of the things that are happening in throughout our society today is how it started. He can choose to live lala land if he wants to but I believe he needs to wake up fast. Anyway, great show Thad. I’m a independent thinker and love listening to all these different opinions on the world today. Just subscribed👍

Equating "soviet" with "Russian" is unfair.. majority if initial upper communist cadre was intentionally not Russian, and not all soviet sins should land on Russia. Famine in Ukraine was run not by Russians but soviet commissars and ethnic Russian, Poles, Greeks, etc ... all who happened to live at territory of Ukraine Soviet Rep suffered. And this horror did not persist, I lived last 20 years in that system and described horrors were something from the past. To this day, many people [ majority in the provinces] in Russia or ex Soviet states still will tell you their life was better during Soviet times.

I don’t know, the USSR was more than its victims just like the USA is more than its victims. I think part of the origins of Soviet kitsch is the very interesting artwork & architecture that’s credited to it. There’s very little of that from Nazi Germany. In addition, Nazi Germany did not last all that long. Perhaps more importantly, the United States never actually fought a war against the Soviet Union, only proxy wars, unlike Nazi Germany. Lastly, there’s widespread knowledge of the victims of communism, and its considered established fact even in what people might consider “far left” discussions - there is no denial of it in most creditable circles.

Just look at what happened in Canada during the peaceful protest in Ottawa. Or January 6 guided tour. The slippery slope is real and currently nothing to be hopeful about. Also the Soviet people might have been good at seeing through the propaganda of the Soviet media but they were very naive in seeing in the American and western media which people then primarily heard on short wave radio

Malice is wrong about the masses. The problem isn’t that they don’t have power, the problem is them being awakened to the power they have. Either way, whether they’re awake or they’re asleep, they are determinative.

How disconnected from reality do you need to be to think Reagan did anything heroic? Go ask the Ukrainians how giving up their nukes worked for them. The two empires weren't giving up anything, they were just setting up the lambs to be defenseless. The INF treaty was only for land based nukes, to pretend that any treaty or security guaranty actually has any value is as stupid as believing Reagan was heroic. Just look at Reagan's two biggest self admitted mistakes, we can never go back and undo the damage he did to the US.
