I’m an unschooling mom too! Melancholic/choleric here! Our school days vary from dreamy and perfectly curated with tea and snacks… to chaotic and completely spontaneous. Most of our schooling is read alouds. Learning happens organically here! My kids are not the keenest on sit down curriculum worksheet super structure kind of schooling. They just want to sit with tea and listen to a great story (fiction or nonfiction) and lots of discussion. It’s so beautiful and natural. Not forced at all. I think more people would love to unschool but like you said, it’s kind of got a bad reputation and we are so engrained with the idea that if a trained professional didn’t make the curriculum or teach the curriculum, it’s not sufficient. Once we break free of those limits a wide world of academic freedom opens!

My daughter is going into 2nd grade in a private school we love. Every morning is so stressful and she’s always late. When we don’t have school we are both happier. The thought of teaching early childhood basics stressed me out but now that she knows how to read I’m considering homeschool. Thank you for this video

Homeschooling is so easy and definitely a little ones needs to be fun and playful. I homeschool all ages successfully and I don't even know English like you. There are many curriculums that can help you so you don't feel like teacher of all subjects. Seriously nothing to be afraid

Thank you .... Thank you so much for this video. I am a homeschooling mama of 3 with horrible health issues and I have been fighting for 10 years. I joined the Catholic Church 2 years ago. God has been healing me ever since I started taking the Eucharist. I try so hard to homeschool every day but most days it was just reading, writing and math. I feel so much better now knowing that is enough. I thank God for you and to hear your story! I wish I could work for you in some way donate my time to your mission. You are so lovely! ❤

Thanks for the encouragement. I’m a homeschool mama of 4. Our last baby came in august, and our homeschooling has been relaxed. I just couldn’t keep up with a “regular” curriculum and a new baby. But I’m just doing what we can, not killing myself, reading books and playing outside, and my kids are learning!

Cameron I find it interesting I clicked this video as I don’t typically watch among the Lilies. I’m so glad I did. I am a mom of 4 who has also had 3 miscarriages and when you talked about it breaking you tears spring to my eyes. Clearly my body is holding that pain and I *think* I’m at the tail end of a really hard few years. Thank you for using your platform to talk about that. Praying for you and for your health. We are quite similar in personalities and school emotional relationships, etc. I will look forward to watching more!

Absolutely every family is different. It’s not for us though. We have decided to do Catholic school and we love our local school and the families that attend. So far it’s just my oldest in school now and she loves it. But she’s also an extreme extrovert social butterfly. She’s the type that doesn’t like being on break too long and gets sad when she’s sick and misses school. My second will be starting kindergarten after the summer. He has a completely different temperament. I have discussed with my husband if he does not do well then we need to discuss other options like homeschooling. I don’t feel confident in doing it. But if my son needs it we will make it happen no matter what

Carnivore diet has changed my life! I went from chronically ill with autoimmune diseases to being able to show up for my family, being able to work out regularly, being able to function all day! Been down the rabbit hole in scientific research and tried about everything. Carnivore diet has been the game changer. Been exactly what you have ... Nothing left to lose, willing to do anything. Carnivore you gotta give time though. I am coming up to 1 year and it has been slow steady improvement.

Iron fixed it 16 years later. Going to warm climates and closer to the sun helped alot. It's the vitimine d. Your body absorbed total and complete minerals from your swim. It absorbs it better than supplements.

I remember listening to Bonnie Landry on your podcast and I started listening to Make Joy Normal ever since. I am leaning into being a more unschooling mom more and more each day. l also want to point out that its frustrating when people assume you are neglecting your kids education and that they are not actually learning when you dont adopt a typical, school-like method or curriculum. For two main reasons : 1) learning only through a medium of pencils and paper and using an apparatus like a hard chair/desk/table is so idiotically arbitrary and senseless and 2)as an unschooling leaning mom I feel like it takes me just as much time or more of focused attention on my kids education. Reading takes up a significant portion of our day as well as saying yes to all the projects, experiments, baking and cooking, field trips and research tangents they are curious in and also providing materials and opportunities for their interests.

My brain/ body broke at age 30 after my 3rd baby. Mostly neurological problems, migraines, inability to sleep, and extreme fatigue. It sent me on a mission to figure out how to fix myself. I had lots of medical testing but never received answers. I don't know what went wrong, but I got better over the years with flare ups along the way. What seemed to help? Lowering carbs, increasing animal fats and protein. And high amounts of salt. And rest. And sun. But home schooling 6 kids made it super hard to rest. Also felt super guilty for not being wife and mother they needed. The body is really a mystery. Is it my brain, is it my hormones, is it my nutrition, is it the stress, is it because I can't sleep? Why can't I sleep? It's so frustrating. I'm really thankful when I'm full of energy.

I think he could still get into college if he gets a diploma and passes the ACT or SAT with high enough scores. I’m not sure what requirements there would be for a diploma, probably depends on your state, and probably would require passing graduation exams from your state. At higher levels (like high school) they may require a real curriculum or grades though.

We've had our kids attend private classical schools, homeschool and charter throughout the years...I can't tell you how many kids I've seen homeschooled where very little education was done at home and 5th graders were reading at 1st grade level and parents expect a school to make up for years of education missed. Homeschooling done well is a beautiful thing, but also rare.
@anzot6903
@anzot6903 Год назад
I have been around hundreds of homeschoolers all my life, and I have never experienced any sort of educational neglect like that. Most of my acquaintances are incredible and successful adults. That sounds like a situation to get CPS involved in. I'm sorry you haven't witnessed the beauty of homeschooling the way most people do it.
@alqoshgirl
@alqoshgirl Год назад
@@anzot6903 you can’t just say that though. Great that it’s so positive for you, but it simply isn’t like that for everyone. And to think that then they must be abused is absurd. Many loving parents are sometimes clueless about their kids needs. I know I would struggle with homeschooling my kids and I’m a very loving mother and highly educated. Everyone needs to discern things for themselves and the type of kids they have. Not every child is the same. Not every household is the same.
@alqoshgirl
@alqoshgirl Год назад
I agree Jamie. Some absolutely loving and well intentioned parents hurt their kids development. I can absolutely see homeschooling being great for some, but it simply is not for everyone. We’re doing the Catholic school route too and have been very happy with it so far
@anzot6903
@anzot6903 Год назад
@@alqoshgirl the specific assertion was that good homeschooling is rare. The studies regarding the academic success of homeschoolers vs. Public and private schoolchildren is quite indicative of the opposite writ large. There are some outlying cases of actual neglect and abuse, along with well-meaning but ignorant parents, but those are few and far between both in my experience and according to statistical analysis. The academic success of homeschoolers is also marvelous given that a significant portion of them are statistically more likely to have diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabilities (which is frequently one of the reasons parents pull kids from trad. school, they realize their child doesn't thrive in that setting. Public schools only receive funding to help those struggling students who are two to three years behind their peers, and so there is no incentive to test or remediate for a struggling child sooner than that. Private schools rarely have any support for SPED children). To say that good homeschooling families are rare is not true, and it discourages those who can benefit from it from pursuing it due to fear of failure.

I still can't walk and can now talk a bit - couldn't talk at all before... ANYWAY, when I was diagnosed with MS, I went the unschooling route - SO GOOD. I taught all of my kids to read using the word lists in the Why Johnny Can't Read book and I STRONGLY recommend that approach! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_Johnny_Can%27t_Read (My Mom homeschooled the last 3 kids in my family and I picked that up from her.)
