Femke Bol is a dutch athlete making history with almost every race that she runs. In 2023 she's already broken 2 world records. First it was the 500 meters, and now it's the 400 meter dash.
What will she do for the remainder of 2023?

Fan-tas-tic WR! A perfect prelude to her outdoor hurdling. She says she’ll stick to the 400H even if that means being second forever, but I think Femke will probably be much closer to Sydney on the 400H this year: Femke didn’t break her PB in 2022 on the hurdles because the 15 strikes combined with her increasing flatspeed were slowing her down (made her take too small steps). Not natural and she came too close on the hurdles. Now, however, she’s been training on 14 strikes since December, which suits her height of 1.84 m. much better. With the longer, natural strikes her flatspeed has already improved spectacular. A year before her WR of 49.26 indoor her PB was 50.63, so she took off 1.37 sec. I think that, due to the adjusted training, the progress on Femkes hurdling will be even bigger (the 400 hurdles gap between Sidney’s WR and Femke’s PB btw is 1.35 sec). I think Sydney needs another WR to stay ahead of Femke (which is not impossible). There’s no saying where this will lead to. I hope Sydney is going for the hurdles in Budapest WC. Femke for sure is. We’re in for a treat. (Lucky me: I got tickets for Budapest day 1, 4 and 6 to see Femke in mixed 4x400 and hurdling (and Sifan Hassan I hope).

Nice video! And nice overview and analysis too. The kneejerk reaction is very often “oh Femke ran this time, so Sydney will run 1,4 seconds faster” , but that never takes intoaccount the difference in their situation. On top of being a bit younger Femke could also well be at a different point in her development curve. When Sydney was already at the Olympics, Femke was probably doing a very limited training program as the system for Track and Field in NL is just not all that and she also did not have the Ingebritsen style father. The first time she jumped a hurdle was three years later, but if you look back that was just running a 400 flat en doing a little jump whenever she came across a hurdle. She is getting stronger, faster and her hurdling technique also has plenty of room for improvement, unlike Sydney’s who already does not even seem to notice that the hurdles are there. I would still expect Sydney to just come out on top in the end, but the idea that she will stroll to a Paris Olympics 400 plus 400 hurdles double with no competitions not right.

This is the best news we've had in awhile, thanks for posting. There are two reasons why this record is so significant: the tarnished competition of the past and the disgraceful unfair competition of the present. When Jarmila Kratochvílová set the world record in 1983 she was taking steroids so in reality that record should be taken away. To this day Jarmila refuses to admit she was a Doper like all the Soviet Russia & Soviet Satellite nations athletes and says it was rigorous training and high doses of vitamin B12 that account for her records, a claim treated with skepticism by several anti-doping campaigners. On Feb 19, 2023 Femke Bol broke the record CLEANLY which shows how much better she is than any of the Soviet or Soviet Satellite athletes with their drug-assisted records. Secondly, because of all the disgusting news lately in Scotland along with anywhere in the world of women's competitive sports, my first reaction to the title of this post was, "Oh no another male Trans-woman is dominating another women's sport. It is wonderful to see that she is a real woman and I will look for future coverage of her races. It's too bad that in North America where I live Track & Field sports are very poorly received and publicized.

@@yzfool6639 well i think they should just look at what races are going to be the most amazing and to be honest Bol and McLaughlin are capable of running world records while on the 100 and 200 meter i dont find the races that exciting with the current roster of women, so maybe they can just put the 100 and 200m closer together and that way create some space to make 400m and 400m hurdles possible. but im not sure if its even allowed to change the scedule like that. but it sure would be exciting. also the 400 meter runs are a lot more demanding for the body so there needs to be a lot of space between those 2 events so it is harder to scedule then a 100 and 200m ofcourse.

Wow! Wot a stunning performance!! It's great to see an untouchable women's record from the 1980's get laid to waste. After this, I can see the outdoor records going down too (via Bol or McLoughlin). But wot a run this was.......and she was so genuinely shocked herself! Great to do it at a national champs too - the Dutch should have a Bank Holiday after that!

The really tough one is going to be the outdoor 47.6s set by Marita Koch on 6th October 1985, the longest standing official track world record. Nobody has got within half a second of that in the era of modern drug testing.

Yeah, that is the main question here ! Those who dive deep and investigate carefully past era of 1980-1990, the we can definately say that all those records , at least 90% of them where under un fair doping influence ! So dreaming to beat them and say that all circumstances is 1 on 1 is unfair and there are no base for comparision !

Femke Bol is truly special. No end-zone dancing, taunting or strutting....just poise and elegance. Jarmila, on the other hand, was a fearsome person ( even for the age of juicing) that looked like an NCAA wrestler. Sydney's 50.68 is unworldly and won't be easily broken in the next 10 years.

In December in the Dutch press I read a report about her doing special training in South Africa to bring her hurdles stride pattern down from 15 to 14, if her upward progress will take here to that level then we are in for some surprises.
@hermanmertens8383
@hermanmertens8383 Год назад
Yes, she trained this 5:23 since September, end of season 2022. Because 15 steps brought her too close to the hurdles and made her slightly slow down. Imagine what can happen if she gaines only one tenth of a second above each hurdle.
@crosslink1493
@crosslink1493 Год назад
She could also try getting comfortable hurdling with either leg forward. That's what Sydney did, improved her race immensely. She also looks like she 'jumps' over the hurdles a little too much rather than 'run' over them, and that could cut her times down too (maybe 1/2 second); look at the clips in this video from the Olympics and World Champs. With World Champs in 2023 and 2025, plus the Paris Olympics in 2024 it could be a really interesting 3 years if' these two compete head-to-head. We'll all might be saying 'Marita Koch who?' in 2025. 😉

The 400 is one of the hardest races to run. I was top ranked in my division for the 110m high hurdles and pole vault, my coach had me fill in on the 400 once, and I came in dead last and way behind. Really pitiful showing. I told my coach don't you ever do that to me again! I had never trained for that. I have a ton of respect for these athletes.
