Few things in life are more satisfying than striking the sweet spot on a Persimmon driver. If you know, you know.
Ahead of this week's Charles Schwab Challenge, golf course architect and co-founder of the Fried Egg Golf, Andy Johnson, tees it up at historic Dallas Golf Club with his pristine Louisville Golf hickory clubs, presented by Charles Schwab.
Highlighting golf's fun, human, and humorous side. Golf is no longer just the stuffy world of middle-aged country club members. Skratch brings you golf content for a new generation.
From getting the most exotic tee times on Earth (see: Adventures in Golf) to digging into the game's interesting personalities (see: Skratching the Surface, Finding the Fairway), Skratch showcases a side of golf many would never get to see.

I love how golf is turning/is hipster and trendy. Matter of time, the older the clubs and gear/clothing you play with the cooler you are.

Very few hipsters, despite some very successful gents in attendance, at the hickory tournament this year or last. lots of fellows astonished that we'd go to such trouble to make golf more difficult. But then this is middle America.

I just got my set from Louisville and love them. I think I have the same setup you got. Definitely get a lot of looks and questions when I'm on the course. Thanks for the video and I hope more people try out Hickories 'cause it's a blast.

I have a Louisville Niblick Series 5 wood and it is one of my favorite clubs. I know modern clubs are supposed to be more forgiving and easier to hit but this Niblick series 5wood begs to differ.

Just back from my second hickory tournament. It's a blast--but few of us play all new hickory replicas as featured here (nothing wrong with that, just terribly expensive/exclusive). Most of us playing in these hickory events have a mixed bag antiques and replica hickories. Many of us make our own club repairs. Leather grips do not slip on, cracked shafts get glued and bound-or replaced with new wood. Snapping a head off in the course of competition is not that unusual. We play by the old rules too. No club limit, no groove limits, if it was legal/extant in the old days then it's fine now. I have a mashie niblick with a face like a waffle iron--a "BAKSPIN" model. It's as much more about collecting/preserving the clubs and traditions and having a good time on the course as it is winning and being all too serious about our game. Most are fair strikers of the ball, but our events are handicapped for all to enjoy. The MId-South Hickory Classic 2024 (The Course at Sewanee -renovated by Gil Hanse in 2013) in is the books-the hickory books that is. Go hickory when you get tired of the techno-grind. Swing the club, watch the ball fly, feel the joy-make that putt. Geezers with old clubs and snappy outfits everywhere swear by it. It's fun for younger folks too. It's golf.

Glad you do collect and preserve. I personally play persimmons and blades, and would like to get a hickory set at some point. I get more enjoyment playing my own game, and hope it's the same for you. Would love to see some of the reactions when you stymie each other.

@@wadepatton2433 haha... I like how you put the emphasis on "yet." I can almost detect a sinister grin you were having at the thought of that rule being included. My best wishes to you sir, and again thank you.

Been hickorying it for 10 years now. Play mostly louisville clubs. Great clubs. I have some woods they no longer make, like the baffy. If you can find one grab it. One of the best they ever made. Ball goes high and spins. I got tired of modern golf distance mania. It is a whole other world and not the same game. I don't go the clothing route. When i can get away with it just a t shirt, shorts and tennis shoes.. And once you adapt you score just as well as any other ,modern clubs.

Wilson Duo's are soft enough to use with old clubs. For my persimmons I've been playing a Titleist TruFeel. If you want authentic balls used during the Era those clubs would have been used in, you would be looking for Gutta-percha, or gutty, balls.

The problem with hickorys is getting someone else to buy a set and play rounds with you

I've played seven hickory rounds. Four of those were in a hickory tournament, two in practice for the tournament. I own exactly two replica hickories (they are expensive) and about two bags worth of old hickories. YOU find a hickory player who plays old stuff, and he/she will likely have enough spares and extras to set you up for playing. I'm about to that point now only two years in. Old hickories need maintenance so be ready for that. Repin/reglue, shaft straightening, leather gripping, etc. New hickories are great for those who can afford such, I am not he. The second replica hickory I own was a prize for winning the chipping contest this year. The first one I bought second-hand last year. Every other club I use is 1935 or before, many of which have been reshafted at some point.

@@wadepatton2433Do you know know what the weight of hickory shafts are like? I’ve moved to graphite and lighter shafts. So, I’m wondering if hickory is more in the 70-80g range for irons or closer to the 100+ I came from.

I see a few Andy is a 'hipster' comments. This will not stand! Andy is too whiny to be a hipster. He's also not 'hipster' ironic/sarcastic, he's just cynical and sour. If anything Andy is a beatnik who has to tolerate Brendan's hipster/hippy-ness.
