Tea has become an integral part of Indian life, despite its commercial cultivation in the country starting only in the early 19th century. According to Chinese tradition, India is believed to be the birthplace of tea. Today, India is the second-largest producer of tea in the world, after China, with an output of 1.2 million tonnes. The tea-growing area in India, spanning 564,000 hectares , is the second largest globally.
From being primarily consumed by hill communities 150 years ago, tea has now become the national drink of India. However, on average, an Indian consumes approximately one cup of tea for every six cups consumed by an English person.
