Episode 5 - Sammy's Last Stand.
At Orrell the New Year brings the toughest fixtures of the 1991-2 rugby union season: a cup quarter-final and a series of league games which they must win to stay at the top of the table. The pressure is on Sammy Southern, who wants to end his last year as captain with a trophy to his name, but it goes to the final kick of the last match.

This brings back some memories - I was playing for Orrell in the juniors at the time. It's criminal what happened to that club.

Sorry, posting from the misses account. I was playing for the exeter colts U16s and you guys came down our way for a friendly in 1992, you also brought down a colts side aswell. I remember you guys pumping us 60ish - 0. Back then you had one of the best youth teams in england. We may have played against each other. But agreed, bloody criminal in regards to what happened with your club.

@@MartaLarkowska I'd left Orrell for Chorley at the beginning of the 1992/1993 season, everyone else had caught me up size-wise and I wasn't quick / skilful enough to make the team any more. That 16s team would have been the lads I played with though, and there were some cracking players. There was a lad called Graeme Smith who I believe played a few games for Scotland A, I don't think anyone else went on to be a "name". I smile at any misfortune that comes to Dave Whelan though...

Did sammy southern ever play for England??,sounds to me he should of represented them on leadership alone,different era tbf,if he'd of played from '97 onwards he would probably of been a player of some significance,never even had a 10er for a couple of pints!!!,you wouldn't see a player in the Gallagher Premiership nowadays with that predicament,wow

Love the Broncos top but why did top flight club Rugby Union play on a Saturday afternoon when local clubs play at the same time as it doesn't make sense as play on a Sunday you get more fans in the turnstiles from local clubs ?

The reality was they were all part of the same league/division structure so they all played at the same time.

@@samuelspoons3553 Hard to say. The demographic which follows RU now is different to the 90s. I'd have thought spectators would just be locals with some sort of connection to the sport having either played previously, including the old cultural attachment to RU from certain schools. Probably ex players, family, friends, sponsors. I'd add that RU has a strong historic connection to the old posh private schools with matches played on Saturday afternoons (and definitely not Sundays!) A number of the original (mid/late 19th century) RU clubs in the south were old boys clubs from the posh schools so they would have just carried on their old traditions.

I always found it strange that clubs would still play on old 5 Nations Saturdays and the only chance if you played back then was to watch highlights on Rugby Sunday.

@@samuelspoons3553 Indeed so. It changed a bit when Sky got involved as they had to fit football and the international rugby they covered and the kick off times changed. And it became the same for all broadcasters after that.
