Welcome back to Fietsstad! In this episode, we build the canal surrounding the city using the Dutch Canal and Network River assets from the workshop. Then, we build a neighborhood in the city center which borders the "green" side of the canal, featuring some old mansions, rowhouses, and beautiful foliage. Hope you enjoy!
SERIES INFO
If you're new, The Netherlands is a Cities: Skylines series where I'm making a small city inspired by Groningen in, you guessed it, The Netherlands. The city I'm building in this series is called "Fietsstad," which translates to "bike city." I'll be focusing on features such as an old town center, a canal system, planned post-war development, farms, rural villages, and, of course, tons of cycling infrastructure.

The cube houses are actually quite realistic for the Netherlands(I don’t know if it is realistic for Groningen). They were built by rich merchants.

Great job again! A small note on the apartment block next to the bicycle bridge: I would turn that 45 degrees so the balconies look out over the canal. That would be way more realistic.

You should have a small section of the canal that zig-zags like in Gronigen and many other Dutch cities as a remnant of the old battlements' structure there

Referring to the question at 14:00, I think it would be easier to play CSL while having a job than having school. Because when you have a job you go to your job at day and come back home, its done. But it's not like that with school, school continues even after you finish your lectures that day, you still need to study.

Yes the Netherlands is back! Love the new additions immediately! I don't think it is a problem if you work on some newer areas outside the canal ring before finishing the old town within the canal ring entirely. This might give you some more variation while working on Fietsstad but more importantly working on things outside the canal ring might better inform your understanding of how to fill in/finish and detail the inner city. E.g. your placement of a district or a train station might influence how you would like a high street or tram line to run. While it is true that the old town came first before the rest of the city grew outwards, the developments outside the old city defenses have had an effect on the old town through the years.

Random Groningen-Fact of today: The old townhall still bears the scars of WW2, with the walls of the building still having visible chunks and holes from where bullets and tank-shells hit the building when the Germans were using it as a last defense against the Canadians during the Battle of Groningen. The building has multiple monuments built into its outside wall, one of which is a cast metal plate that is meant to highlight a specific deep impact of a shell. Another monument is a large statue of a crystal and a mural dedicated to the Canadians that liberated the city. The text on the mural is: Then rose from War and Fire The Clear Crystal of Peace In commemoration of the liberation of Groningen by Canadian Armed Forces. 1945 13-16 April

Amazing series really!! A suggestion would be to take into account this housing law that was introduced in 1901, because many conditions in the city centre and neighbourhoods close to the centre were in a worse condition due to the high population density. To combat things such as multiple families living in a small home (think of basement or attic homes with whole families in them), the government passed a law that not only combated high population density, but also made the facilities a lot better for the people. Since then, all homes needed to have, for example, at least one bathroom and stairs that were not too steep. This resulted in more uniform buildings, as it was easier to plan whole streets or neighbourhouds like this, because wall heights and window heights also had certain rules from then on. You could take a look at De Pijp in Amsterdam, or Zeeheldenkwartier in The Hague. Both areas are close to the city centre, and you can see these houses are rather more planned than the city centre itself due to the higher degree of uniformity. Maybe someone already told you this, but I thought it would be a useful suggestion! Keep up the great work!!

awesome video, but i think you need to move the university a block or two out, it's not very realistic to have this huuuge building almost in the middle of the old town. From my experience, as a European it should be near the canal, or on the other side of the canal, so it would be outside the city walls. Inside them, so in the core of the city you tend to find only small to medium building, of course unless there was a large section of destroyed structures during the war, but then the building that was constructed in that place later, would be modern, not like yours. So, the most realistic place for that building in that city would be immediatly near the canal if it's in the old town or just near it if it's outside of it. Apart from that, great city. keep it up!

Hey Pres, small point of criticism. I think that the university building is too large for the size of the city. If the city has a building of this size it wouldn't be in the old centre. It is too large in relation to the area inside the canal. It should either be smaller or better yet, outside the centre. I went to the Univerity of Amsterdam myself, which is actually in the historical centre, but its buildings are spread out all over the centre.
