However, a great song works better in some tunings more than others. Not that it's necessarily bad, but if for example you were to play Gojira's Ocean Planet in B the magic of it would be lost.

+Luxorcist not 100% true tho, lower tunings does help with heaviness, but the groove is MUCH more important
@metalfreekz13
@metalfreekz13 7 лет назад
Gabrol Depends on your definition of heavy. For me, fast is heavy, so songs like this that are fast, thrashy, and riff-oriented sound great in Standard Tuning. To some people, Djenty and groovy stuff is what they find heaviest, and it sounds best with lower tunings. So realistically, any tuning is heavy if the song is written well.

Dude for real. My Ibanez is baritone and it only sounds good in distortion, I couldn't in a million years play clean shit with it. I'm even .12 strings. The only way to make things like drop a and b sound audible is to have a 30 inch scale guitar. I miss having my Ibanez in standard so I'm going to tune it back up with some .10s and buy me a schecter omen
@jb_uwu
@jb_uwu 8 лет назад
+Nathan Rixmann I have a 25.5" scale Ibanez 7 string tuned to drop A all the time, and it sounds just as good clean as my 6 string tuned to E standard using .11's. I don't know what you are doing with your guitar but that doesn't seem right.
@jb_uwu
@jb_uwu 8 лет назад
+Jeroen de Bie I use .10 to .59 on the 7 string
@nathanrixmann3016
@nathanrixmann3016 8 лет назад
Mines not a 7. The 6th string on my Ibanez is a .52. It is barely audible in clean. Mine is 25.5 as well, but the size of the string changes everything
@jb_uwu
@jb_uwu 8 лет назад
+Nathan Rixmann Yeah, downtuning doesn't work without going up on gauges or getting a longer scale length. but 25.5 isn't baritone as far as I know. and you can obviously put thicker strings on your ibanez.

Heaviness comes from syncopation and the rhythm. Not from tuning 9 strings down 5 tones.
@runaklem4428

Heaviness comes from a large number of factors. Rhythm is only one of many.
@jonathanpennheim4752
@jonathanpennheim4752 8 лет назад
+David Oakes Heavy comes from weight. How large you are. How many pounds/kilos your guitars weigh. A Les Paul is heavier than a SG. Seventeen stampboxes are heavier than five. If you put all of those into one bag, you can barely lift it from the ground. Now that is heavy.

Lower tuning doesn't make you heavier. It's just the creativity put into the riffs and solos. Your technique also affects how heavy you sound. Playing with bad technique makes it less tight and heavy. Playing with a good technique gives a very tight and heavy sound nearly every metal guitarist loves. So, great job! You rock!

Beautiful definition in the tone when it is a bit more up-tuned. I think it does your guitar a bit more justice than tuning down to A. Both have it's place in the music cannon, though.

@Vortexafternoon
@Vortexafternoon 8 лет назад
Well, look at what Billy Gibbons gets out of thin strings, hey! Also, with the kind of intricate playing you have, the definition you're getting in the tone assists in the transmission of melody. Some metalcore guys are beautiful players, but their tone actually hides their playing. Keep doing this stuff. It rocks.
@haraldeavtraches1598
@haraldeavtraches1598 8 лет назад
+Vortex Afternoon Music I've been saying the same thing for years. I love down-tuning, but it feels like a lot of guitarists now can't quite find how low to tune for their particular style. It's a shame, because there are some truly great players in the 'djent' bands that have been coming out, but a lot of them tune so low, it's hard to even hear what they're playing half the time. This up-tuning, though, I'd like to hear more of this. I'm trying to imagine up-tuned DEP, since Weinman plays in standard already. Might try it myself later on.

up tuning metal may be new trend in future. what string gauge did you use for this tuning?
@peteplaysmusic

+Artur Liping 7 gauge Reverend Willy's by Dunlop :)

I can only think of one band right now that uptunes, instead of down tuning, and that is Vektor. Quite frankly there is no better arguement for uptuning. That band is astounding.

I'll be honest I saw you in one of Leo's (Frog Leap Studios) videos, and thought that your guitar solo kicked @ss. Are you guys friends? Is this maybe why you were in the "Hello" video? Your reaction to the spray had me fuckin' rollin' man.

I find the thing that makes guitar players sound "heavy" is a combination of the aggressiveness in the picking, position of Palm muting, and the way overdrive is set up. Anyways, great video Pete!

Nice, Pete! That sounded amazing. Got a Maiden vibe from that. And I have to agree: one can indeed be heavy in standard E, and this up-tuning proves it.

We up-tune. It's the bass and drums that make it heavy. Guitars should be mid-range.

This song is everything I want out of metal. Awesome. Purely awesome. ...Even tuned like a eunich. Do you think it would change significantly if you transposed it back to your normal tuning?
@peteplaysmusic
@peteplaysmusic 8 лет назад
+Ross whitby Not significantly, I'd bend the last note of the solo instead though. Thanks for watching :)
@FunkywimHD
@FunkywimHD 8 лет назад
+Ross whitby It would sound a bit phatter. When people say low tunings don't make you sound heavier, they're technically right. Lower tunings do mean more bass, and more bass (can possibly, depending on mixing) sound alot phatter and louder, which some people would classify as heavier.

I am just learning the drop tuning and up tuning thing because of having issues that prohibited me from playing. But now the surgeries are done I am getting into rehabilitating my arms and hands again. I want to get a 7 string or 8 one day. I love that you share your knowledge and tabs to the song. You impress me man!!!
