I live 45 minutes from the statue and no one knew anything about it or what it meant before this and they still don"t it doesn't represent violence or slavery it represents history.

The use of the Confederate flag as a racist symbol is a fraction of a percent of the history behind the Confederate flags and the statues that stand today that represent the Confederate States of America. Not saying you don't know the history. I don't know what you know period. But it seems like you may have never really looked no more then a few pages deep into this book tho. My family came here in the late 1700s. My family were farmers. We settled in North Florida and made a Plantation. I have several ancestors buried in Confederate graveyards. The Confederate flag, or may I say Flags because there's more than just the one that everyone knows of. means a lot more too true Southerners then what everyone thinks it's does. Its not about racism. racism is stupid just like you stated. we are all the same skinned. but it's the is the history the fight the turmoil that our ancestors went through to fight for what we thought was right and frankly why we would do anything to keep them from going extinct. The war between the states was never about slavery. It was about the north taxing the southern States to the point where we could not make a decent profit selling our Goods to Europe. It was about politics the South had more people more voting age men than the North did that's why the South had a chant one-man-one-vote. the ending of slavery was never about what the Union truly thought was good for slaves. it was about getting slaves away from the southern states so they could not vote. The Confederate flag and the statues of my ancestors represent to me what we call today the American dream. poor Scottish immigrants coming to America getting land making a farm raising cattle having a family and getting away from corrupt European government that's what my Confederate flag means to me. There's not a racist bone in my body. And I fly the Confederate flag proud.

Man I had to hit that subscribe button after your rant about hate and all that. It was real talk and all facts and most if not every person that isn't ignorant would agree. The whole point of history and learning about it is to prevent history from repeating itself. If we don't know about anything that has happened in the past, good or bad, then we can't learn from it and improve our lives and move forward and adapt to make our live better for everyone and not just a single person or group. But to better everyone as a whole. Keep up the great reactions man.

I often wonder if the ones making the most noise about the statues are people who don’t even live near them. Outsiders trying to start stuff, because they don’t like it. I don’t like the snow, so I avoid the east coast, and anywhere that I will freeze my butt off. I certainly don’t try to make the east coast abolish their weather. Thanks for asking this question. I feel like if we took half the time we spend being divided, to unite, or at least be kind to each other, we could get back to trying to work together to make things better.

Georgia boy here. I can’t speak for everyone, but those in my circles view such things as reminders of the past. I get how others wouldn’t be comfortable seeing these things. But for real, 99.9999% of people who are proud of their southern culture don’t look at these things and say “woohoo! Racism!” We look at them as irreplaceable artifacts of our southern heritage, and simultaneously condemn wholeheartedly the mistakes made here in the past. Imagine tearing down the Statue of Liberty or the liberty bell because someone decided that America is in itself a symbol of oppression, and you start to get the picture.

Ya know what bothers me about the civil war flag, statues, and the monuments being destroyed? There was black soldiers who fought for the South.. And several of there descendants were at several protest over the rebel flag and statues and they were called all kinds of disgusting names because they are proud of there family, proud of there family's sacrifice, and proud of The South.. I mean it is part of this countrys history.. It was American against American.. It was people of both skin color fighting on both sides. I for one can not disrespect anyone who stands up for there beliefs weather i agree with them or not.. And i can not see tearing down history of anyone. I'm not quite an adult yet so y all might not take anything I say seriously but I was born and raised in Gadsden Alabama, being from the south we rep the revel flag, it's our flag, our home flag, just like Cali reps the Cali flag with the bear, and now I live in Arizona and round here they rep the Arizona flag. Also to us southerners racism is for the most part stupid (not speaking for every southerner just all the ones I've known thru out my life) and the civil war wasntbaboyt slavery, it was about state rights, yes we wanted to "keep" slaves but that's very loose... after leaving the u.s we southern state wrote the constitution of confederation which in 2 years would ban all buying, selling, and trading slaves, and in 20 years slavery would be banned completely, we just couldn't risk the blow of complete elimination, we knew it was wrong but it was survival, and after we lost the civil war and slavery was completely banned a lot of families died from loss of money... a lot of my family died off, none were slave owners tho, they were partners with these farms, and all the farms got taken over by Yankees who built factories, so we lost money, children starved, disease struck, so no slavery was never good. We knew that in the south, but it was our to leave the u.s.a and we fought for our right and lost, so to this day we fly our flag and keep memorials to remind us of a time where we banned together to fight for our rights, where not just a group of people but several states found common ground to believe, and to resemble that everyone makjes mistakes but were still proud of where were from... I fly my flag to remember all my family who died in that war, and there friends, and families who's fathers never returned...

And me myself I don't believe the statue represented slavery, did the confederacy own slaves yes but so did the other side in the war and if we're getting technical the war wasn't even over slavery it started over taxes , I believe the statue represented the same thing as the Lincoln monument... Would love for people to give me their opinion. I live in Richmond Virginia (Capital of the CSU) and we have 5 statues to Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and others. Are we allowed in your mind to keep them up being a place of extreme importance in the story

I love your view on the staues i wish people could get the difference between two. Leaning from history or people glorifying reacist acts. The difference is very significant. People need to continue to educate themselves all the time. If you try and erase the past for the wrong reasons, will no doubt be bound to someday repeat the past. We as Americans need to work together as one. Not allowing skin deep views to continue to diversify us as people. That is when we we are weak and powerless. The true heroism of figures like Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, MLK, Emmett Till (Mamie Till), etc. wouldn't have the same impact if people didn't learn all sides of our historical equation. Good, bad or otherwise...it's all part of our history & trying to "erase" any & all physical remnants, connections and/or representations to history in general (because this generation is suddenly "offended" by EVERYTHING), doesn't mean those atrocities didn't still occur. We need to educate ourselves & understand our history (the good, the bad & the ugly)...to ensure mistakes of the past are never again repeated (on any level or in any capacity)! HUMAN LIVES MATTER...& WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS. There's enough anger & hate in this world, we need to stop encouraging more & definitely stop promoting divisions & separations between us. We should be unified as a country...not divided by turmoil. (UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL) And I certainly agree that racism is ridiculously ignorant...shade of skin pigment is only determined by the part of the world from which our ancestors originated...beyond that, it means absolutely nothing. It's simply nature & adaptation to the elements for survival (like brown bears, black bears & polar bears...they're all bears, just different colored fur, depending on where they're from). The Confederate flag is a BATTLE FLAG period that southerners fought under. Including whites, blacks, indians etc. Its a symbol of heritage, not hate. Some use ut for the wrong reasons. But they have used the american flag as well. Its all history the progressed from. Its history, nothing more.

We all are American's, and it's your history as much as it's mine. As bad as it was, slavery was only a portion of the civil war. And the only reason it was part of it at all, is the north was placing tariff's and heavy taxes on the already dirt poor south. And at that time we didn't have machinery and technology to supplement the work force consisting of slaves. And it was just the way life was then. The north was starving the all the south out "slaves included" it's not like they had any racial justices at that time that would allow them to just jump into the work force after slavery was gone. It was terrible and dark times for all involved. Brother's going to war with brother's all in the name of getting past the hardships, and get to where we need to be. And like it or hate it.... it is what has made us the leader's of the free world. To erase our history is to erase the lesson's learned and the achievement's we made to country and the world. That shit is long behind us, don't let the politics and media take us backwards. They just playing on the heart's of the extremist's, because they know the extremist's always gotta have the loudest voice in the room to push their agenda's. Racism is an ember of what it was, and it will only have life as long as we give it a breath. All minorities have had bigger hills to climb, but they was never alone - blacks, native American's, irish, muslims, jews, the list would include all races and religions if you rewind it back far enough. #proudAmerican and lover of all people, hater of all hate

I actually really loved this reaction to this song/video and I will have to agree with ol boy of we are all the same when you take the skin off. I love my black and Hispanic and what not brother's and sisters. We are all cut from the same cloth no matter our skin color or belief system. The rebel flag and Confederate monuments that stand today are a reason and thought of the do not repeat thing. The Confederate battle flag that we know of today as the rebel flag. And at the time was the battle flag not the actual Confederate flag like the dumbasse's in the media like to portray it as. I don't remember what you said exactly and I don't feel like going back to quote you but you basically said something along the lines of if something bothers or if you hate it or something like that, don't pay attention to it and it shouldn't bother you, so you don't know why people have hate in them. So if the statue bothers you, for any reason whatsoever, shouldn't you just not pay attention to it so it don't bother you? Not saying I don't agree with you because I agree with you 100%.
