After experiencing the low coolant issues in our 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric 38kWh (see • Refill coolant message... ), it went into the Hyundai dealer for the coolant recall. This video is an update following that recall where the cooling system was flushed and coolant replaced.
Hyundai have a recall currently ongoing to replace the coolant in Ioniq 38kWh vehicles. These use an "electric vehicle battery coolant" called BSC-1. It's basically a low conductivity coolant. Hyundai are now replacing this with a BSC-2 coolant following many owners experiencing a drop in coolant level which has been found to be caused by the BSC-1 crystallising up within the battery pack.

I just brought my 2020 into my local Hyundai dealership and they were very helpful once I told them what to do as a result of the information provided on your Channel. It's taking three days though because they didn't have enough coolant to flush it out in stock. It was actually your channel that helped me decide to buy 2 Hyundai ioniqs. Thank you so much for making these videos!

I brought my 2021 Ioniq in to the dealership for the coolant recall (which they didn’t even advise me of and I only knew about it from your channel). They said it would take about two hours to complete and they offered to drop me off at home and pick me up when it’s done. Turns out it took the whole day because they claimed the flushing machine was giving them trouble. So after calling a couple times during the day they ended up offering me a loaner vehicle for the evening and said it would be ready the next morning. I picked it up and the work seems fine. Thanks to watching your other videos I wasn’t so worried about the presence of coolant splashes or drops in the general area as I knew to expect that this would happen while removing hoses, filling coolant, etc. Thanks again for your informative videos and love from Ontario, Canada!

Update: during the evening after I picked up the car, the “add coolant” light came on again! I turned off the car and started it up again, and it’s gone. I wonder if there’s a faulty sensor or something 😮
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 5 месяцев назад
Apparently (so I'm told), there aren't any sensors. It's all done by measuring the water pump. But let it settle down and see if it continues throwing the error. It sounds like they may have not done the flushing well enough.

My 2020 ionic limited just popped this code. I'll be bringing it in today to have the job performed. I obviously panicked at first as I was 120 miles from home when it showed, but your video, combined with a diagnostic run clip showing this issue does not cause battery overheating, I was confident to drive it home. Charges fine, drives fine, discharge/recharge rates unchanged. Just this stupid annoying warning notification that you can't clear from the wonderful display these vehicles have. I absolutely love the car and I hope this issue doesn't force me to make the decision to trade it in.

Don't be...great car in my opinion. All this was a recall so no charge for you if need doing. If you want travel faster on longer journeys than have a look at the 28kwh, Tesla Bjorn here on RU-vid did a 1000km challenge with both and the 28 did it about 2 hours faster because it can charge fast, and doesn't coldgate...once or twice a year I can put up with the slower charge speed (need to stop because of my boys anyways) solid car with a good quality drivetrain👍

Hello Matt, thanks for the update..I think part of the problem is lack of heat in the battery so the coolant never gets pumped around, especially if only charged on 7kw. My car had the same problem, now fixed by Hyundai and no issues since (about 5weeks). I think once a month rapid charge (maybe more often in the winter) to get that coolant moving is the way to go. I really don't get why Hyundai put liquid cooling on this car with only 50kw (if you lucky) charging speed, it doesn't make sense, especially because the 28 could charge a lot faster but was only air cooled, what was Hyundai thinking? Great videos by the way, new subscriber😉👍
@judebrown4103
@judebrown4103 Год назад
Interesting theory...though mine is only ever charged on a rapid charger. If you can call it that think the highest charge rate I've seen is about 38kW but then I usually drive the mile or so straight from home so it's rarely warm, might see forty something after a bit longer on the road. I'm getting the refill coolant warning nonetheless. Haven't managed to pop the bonnet yet or got round to ringing the Hyundai garage either due to ill-health, my own and elderly m-i-l so I hope it holds up until I do.

Nissan Leaf had many cooling issues because of passive cooling (i.e. none). Cooling has a little to do with charging, but most importantly with day-to-day use in hot climates. Without water cooled battery packs, one could expect battery life to be severely affected in hot climates.

Thanks for the update, my dealer used some green coolant, they insisted that they are using what Hyundai told them, and on the way they have destroyed the plastic threading's of the reservoir, so I'm waiting on that part as well. After their job the notification popped a couple of times, but now for about two weeks it disappeared completely and my level did dropped form Max to the middle or less, guess there were some air bubbles in the system.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos Год назад
The dealer's workshop technicians clearly aren't following the TSB then, as that is the wrong coolant and the reservoir bottle is left hand thread, so they must have forced it off the wrong way and broke it. I showed this in my previous video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CUs-YoGTMlw.html The low conductivity coolant the Ioniq with wet battery cooling should be the BSC-1 or now the BSC-2 coolant, which are both blue.

Had mine done last month. Exactly the same thing happened and within a week of driving it the coolant level dropped so much that there was barely anything in the expansion tank. Even the Refill Coolant warning came back on. Took it back to the dealer and they topped it up, been fine since so probably just air bubbles working themselves through the circuit.

I like your effort so let me help you out mate. The contamination is coming from the radiator due to residual overspray from the controlled atmospheric brazing process. Hyundai needs to flush the cores before installation with a hot water then let the cores dry out by oven baking them so that the oxide layer is properly regenerated. Changing the coolant won't solve anything until that radiator core is hot water flushed.

We had a flush and replacement done a couple of months ago. This was due to re-call. We'd had no problems at all prior to this. Checked level last week and had haf dropped to just above min. Took the car back to the dealer. They said they were happy with this snd wouldn't top it up. They said if there was a problem, that the level was more likey to rise? Sounds odd to me, but for now well just have to keep watching it.

It's not hard to imagine that after an extensive flush and refill, an air bubble worked its way up to the top. What concerns me a more is that the later coolant type of the same colour doesn't seem to be marked as such on the reservoir.
@TH3G4M3SM4N
@TH3G4M3SM4N Год назад
Hi Matt, have you DC charged the car since the flush? Is it possible that the battery pack coolant loop is closed by default and it opens to get coolant in only when battery overheats (while rapid charging for example), thus the coolant level appears to drop ? The new liquid seems darker in color. I read that BSC-2 concentration is 60% whereas BSC-1 concentration is 50% which may explain the darker color.

Thanks for this Matt. Are you confident that the flush through was done properly as you demonstrated in a previous video? Also if the light continues to come on after they've done it is it still covered by warranty, do you know?

@GoGreenAutos Год назад
No. I have very little confidence in main dealer workshops. The stuff I see and hear that is (or often is not) carried out at main dealerships is scary! Yes, you should have no problems with any future coolant issues being under warranty as it will be the same issue and the fact that they have an recall in place for it should resolve in conflict.

After changing the coolant with the new procedure the error was already still active. My bodyshop told my there is a third water pump in the service drawings but is has as a part number only a note. It was a hard job to find out the correct part and with a big help from our Hyundai general importer the right part was found. 😀 Now after two week no issues any more 👍 Time to fix error: 1 and 1/2 year

I have same coolant recall next week. The last two summer's when it is hot the 7kw charger has cut to 3.4kw and sometime stopped. Hope this fixes this. Will make sure that they use bsc2. Thanks for info. Hyundai have been very slow at solving problems like 12 volt battery up-date. The dealer kept telling me nothing wrong but update after 2.5 year fixed problem.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos Год назад
I have a feeling that this recall to replace the sludging/crystallising coolant is only going to be effective if they properly flush the residue out of the battery pack and cooling system. If the 3-way valves aren't removed (which I'm pretty sure they aren't) then a complete flushing out cannot be completed. I've done another video on the channel about a coolant flush on the 28kWh Ioniq and Hyundai's TSB isn't thorough enough. I have my suspicion that this problem will continue.
@AdrianColes
@AdrianColes Год назад
Surely they’ll have kit/a button to press on their fancy OBD2 machine to actuate the valves as part of the procedure. Whether the dealer follows this correctly or not is another matter.

A recurrent coolant refill warning seems preferable to coolant leaks that may cause a (potentially fatal) loss of power while driving due to conductive liquid entering the power control unit or some other critical component.

I did not know about this problem. Recently had a 4 year service with the dealer. One week after the service (the coolant was changed on warranty) the "refill coolant" message popped up. The coolant level is right at the max mark. After driving for about 50 km the message disappeared. Does anyone know why that might have happened ?

I took my 2020 Ioniq EV to the local dealer 6 months ago as part of the recall to have the coolant flushed out and refilled. Also the low coolant warning had come on. I now noticed that the coolant level had dropped to below the minimum mark. I do very low mileage and only trickle charge. I took it back to the dealer who has topped it up and confirmed there are no coolant leaks. I am not sure which coolant was used but I am pretty resigned to the fact that it is not fixed and I will be going back to the dealers in another 6 months.
@GoGreenAutos

I've come to the conclusion some dealers probably aren't doing the flushing thoroughly enough which could result in debris/crystallisation being left within the battery pack.

Had mine done 2 weeks ago and its still on max as of today. I originally took it in for a rader fault that kept knocking the cruise control off and they did the flush under a recall. As for the radar, after a day of having it they diagnosed the radar unit as faulty and I am waiting for the part to come in. If anyone has trouble with theirs get it done before warranty runs out as I was told the part is extremely expensive and takes over4hrs to fit and test

@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 7 месяцев назад
Both our Ioniqs had the coolant flush/recall done and both have been fine since. They must use BSC-2 coolant. The repeated issues are most likely due to the garage not properly flushing the system and getting the sludge out. Seems some garages are doing this job too fast which indicates not enough flushing was done. Its a 2-3 hour job. If you get your car back in an hour, I would expect further repeats.

@@GoGreenAutos That's great, thank you very much for your help. It's booked in as an all day job so I won't know how long they spend but I'll ask about it at least twice when I arrive (phoned yesterday and asked about which coolant they use and the lady I spoke to just said "it's the one that is recommended for your car, it's why it has been recalled") so they know I'll be a pain in the neck if they don't do a good enough job. At least I know now that it is a recall and they're not just doing it because the light came on. Fingers crossed!

@GoGreenAutos 11 месяцев назад
No, its not anything to do with charging. Its the coolant they used. Is the dealer definitely refilling with the new BSC-2 coolant? If so, then the issue could be.... 1. they've not flushed out all the solids from the battery pack (some dealers clearly aren't doing the flushing correctly due to the speed they do this job) 2. you need a new water pump, as its the speed of the water pump that triggers the warning message
