I bought a 1500 estate new in 1978, same colour as yours. I always felt the car could be upgraded a lot. I ordered mine with a revcounter and factory fog lights. I would have had the quad headlights. Some roof rails might suit it too. I did fit a high level brake light. A properly fitted carpet would be an improvement. Seats out of a later BL car with headrests would be good to. The car had no duel economy but pulled OK. It ate wheel bearings every 4,000 miles. Top speed was pathetic at about 80. 30 mpg. Always felt there was potential. Oh yeah I fitted an automatic ariel too.

I worked with a work colleague who purchased an allegro new, it was so sad to see this English made car returned to the dealer with many problems, oil and water leaks, suspension problems the list seemed to go on. Then after the second year of ownership the car started to rust I persuaded him to part exchange it for a different make and was shocked at the trade in offer. The allegro was valued at less than thirty percent of the purchase price. The allegro had the ingredients to make a fine car but was let down by build issues. Ultimately this led to British leyland’s demise, so many well known makes go to the wall. Your example is the exception, I can only advise to keep it dry this will not help the leaky suspension and other day to day bugs that plagued BL cars. Ford has come a long way their small models they are reliable and run well, but remember these cars have a finite life. German cars seem to last longer. I purchased a small German car in the mid eighties and have not looked back. Good video, not sure why you would want those driving lights, They will be the first to go in a shunt, or perhaps for local club rallies in that case the Allegro will let you down.

Many thanks for your comments. I think that most of the problems you highlight,were bought about by poor build issuues,which led to British Leylands problems. I have been lucky with my car since I owned it ,which is from 2019.I have had none of the problems your colleague had..I am lucky that I am a ex motor Mechanic working through the seventies/eighties.I worked for a Main Vauxhall dealer, Vauxhall also had a bad problem with rust. I can remember on a number of times getting a new car form the showroom and having to put rusting problems right before the handover to customers. Thanks for watching and it will be takeing part in local club rallies,hopefully it wont let me down, Cheers John.

Splendid. Back in 1989 I was driving a V-reg Allegro (mk3) 1.3L four door. I loved it. Very comfortable. Wheel bearings, n driveshaft CV joints n boots would wear out. I couldn't find front wing spares in the scrap-yards.

Hi David thanks for your comments , I was lucky that I bought it with most drive train parts replaced .I also find it comfortable and the 1750 engine helps to keep up with todays traffic.

Fabulous car. Advanced ideas. Years ahead in terms of design. Much maligned by ignorant bigots. Fords, Rootes and Vauxhalls of the same era had rust and reliability issues as well as BL. I had a 1750 Maxi. Awesome machine- interior space, roadholding, made Cortinas look ancient.

I agree with all you say, I find the 1750 keeps up well with current traffic, cruises at 70 with ease,and does make the fords look ancient . Thanks for Watching

They are a good engine, not the fastest or most economical but generally lasted well,the estate is a very practical vehicle.

Hi simon nice to hear from you again .I agree with you ,I had the same thoughts about twin SU conversion as I dont wont to change the engine ,also I am going to regrind the ports on the head, I think the engine has more BHP to give . If I see the carbs will buy them .Rev counter /oil I mean to get, Cheers John Stay safe

Much much better as an estate than the saloon.. I see it was supplied by Silcox in Pembroke Dock too where I came from. The old Silcox dealership is now an Aldi !

Silcox ran buses out of Pembroke Dock up until a few years ago, I think that they run a self drive van hire fleet now , I have got a Morris Oxford with a Pembrokeshire de plate that always lived in Pembroke Dock.

It is a lot better to have the car on the road with a non-standard rear box than sitting around deteriorating while you try to find a standard rear box. I bet the 1750 conversion made the car a lot better for towing...
@johncottonclassics
@johncottonclassics 3 года назад
I have not tried towing anything yet, but will try it out shortly. Main thing I find is the low down Torque you get .I can pull Quickly from 30mph in Fith gear without changing down gear.The manual Box makes it a nice driving car that keeps up with modern traffic. Thanks for watching , Cheers John

I had 3 Allegros, 2 x 1100 and a 1500 estate, I thought they were great wee cars n dunno why they were nicknamed the Allagro!
@johncottonclassics
@johncottonclassics 3 года назад
I have had it for about 18 months and done about 2000 miles in it with no problems. The Media /Press tried to kill the Allegro in the 70s/80s. I would always have a Allegro over a Escort or viva any day. Thanks for your interest in my channel

These cars were 5hit even when they were brand new in 1981 The word "Classic" is overused...It is a 5hit car from 1981 that somehow has managed to avoid the scrapyard. But if you like/love it then that is all good. That is all that matters I suppose.
