Trust me.... I burned up three transmissions before going to John Wood. Nobody else builds that transmission better period. I believed other builders selling me a Stage 2 transmission with a billet input shaft and converter. Guess what, they all detonated within a year. I just towed a 34 foot trailer to havasu that weighed 18000 pounds loaded in 108 degree weather and my transmission never got over 160. It’s just bad ass period. My truck is turning 38’s on 4:88 gears. Bought the 4:88 when I had 40’s on it. I wouldn’t go any higher then 4:56 gears on your rig if you want to tow in OD. If you do you will drop below 2000 rpm and lug the hell out of the motor or take it out of OD and Be at 2800 rpm at 68mph. That 7.3 sweet spot is right around 2200-2300 rpm. So get a gear that gets you there in OD.
@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 4 года назад
Peter Adamo damn bud! That’s crazy. My truck is already almost done getting the new stage 2 put in, I hope it lasts 😬 I don’t tow at all though, so it should be alright. If not, I’ll go with John woods next. And yeah I was thinking 4.30s or 4.56s for sure. I feel like I’ll be happier with the 4.30s over the 4.56s on the hwy, but still be happy with the take-off gains around town compared to 3.73s I have now. Especially since I don’t tow, I’m not sure 4.56s are necessary...

You should drive it now that it’s cooled down and see if it gets hot again before you drop 5k on a trans
@Rockpil
@Rockpil 4 года назад
Good formula for gears to keep stock like acceleration is (new tire overall height/stock tire overall height) * stock gear ratio = optimum new ratio. So 40/31.7 * 3.73 = 4.70. Looks like 4.88's would be more ideal than 4.56 with a 40" tall tire. Just something I saw on an episode of Extreme Off-road. Take it with a grain of salt...
@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 4 года назад
Interesting! I’ve heard that formula as well, however I think it’s more accurate for someone that uses their truck or jeep for crawling or mudding or heavy towing. I know a few people with 40’s and 4.56s on their 7.3s and they say it’s pretty extreme for daily driving, especially on the hwy. but that could just be different based on different people’s opinions. Thank you for the info and that calculation!
@zachtaylor6785
@zachtaylor6785 4 года назад
Using online calculators backs up what he said^ you need a little taller than 4.56 to get back to same as stock. You said you do a good bit of city driving along with some highway driving so long as you ain’t trying to run 85 on the hwy then I vote 4.56 they will actually be a hair more hwy friendly than the stock set up

Save the coin on the mistimoto and just get a dorman 6.0 cooler no one will see it and it will help you put some $ to the gears. 5,000 for a built trans is a pretty good rate I paid 6,000 for an in and out build. Maybe go 4.56 so you can run a little bigger tire next time you get them. No offense to those 40’s look small with that lift kit

@80HD, save yourself some money on the trans cooler and get a 6.0l trans cooler either 26/31 row (not much of a difference from one to the other) if your going to get a new trans cooler there’s no need for him to do a “hot flush” so you might be able to save yourself some coin, Make sure the trans builder uses metal clips instead of plastic as they do from the factory and a triple disc billet inverter is key to helping these transmissions stay cool and not slip which causes excess heat.
@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 4 года назад
I’ll have to look up the cost of a 6.0 trans cooler and see if it’s better cuz a brand new mishimoto one is only $350. And I want him to do the hot flush because there could be blockage in the trans cooler that cause it to get so hot I. The first place. And I want to be able to drive the truck home in the meantime while I order the new trans cooler. Plus he isn’t charging me extra to do it. He includes it in installing the new built trans for me. And he explained everything he uses on the stage 2 built trans and EVERYTHING is upgraded🤘🏻🔥💯

Man I’m looking for a Pit right now, any leads on one?! Definitely don’t try the gears yourself, not an insult but put in a trans yourself before you do a job like gearing, tight tolerances w/those. I’d put some new greasable u-joints in whole you have the driveline out (if yours are unknown condition) and fresh Transfer case oil (easy job).

He’s actually a Dogo Argentino which is a type of mastiff. I like pit bulls but my girl wanted a bigger dog so that’s why we went with the Dogo Argentino. They look like Pitbulls but bigger. He should be about 100-110lbs when he’s full grown without even training him to be muscular. They can be even bigger if you work them out right. Anyways I don’t personally know anyone but when I was looking for a pit the best way I found, which is the same way I got my Dogo, was joining Facebook groups and asking around. There’s always tons on people on those pages. And as far as the gears I agree with you bro. I’ll play it safe and have a professional do it🤘🏻

I'm curious what your end goal is for the truck. I've been watching your build off and on for a while now and I haven't been able to figure out what the finished product is supposed to be. Now, please don't get me wrong. I'm not here trying to bust your chops. I've build a few rods over the years and I know everyone has a different idea of what they want. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just that I haven't been able to deduce what you're trying to build. Most of the mods I've seen you do appear to make the truck less usable and/or shorten the lifespan. For example, jacking the truck up and putting bigger tires on her puts extra strain on not just the transmission but entire driveline, not just gearing but bearings, bushings, u-joints, etc. It also sets the bed too high to be usable and raises the center of gravity making it less stable. If you're trying to build a mudder, there's plenty of other platforms that are cheaper and easier to work with like a Tacoma for example. And that bumper would offer little to no protection for any kind of off-road application. You don't tow which is good because, again, the lift would make towing not only impractical but also unsafe. Mishimoto makes some good products, but you can get nearly the same cooling with a 6.0 trans cooler. If a 31 will keep that 4R100 down under 210, probably closer to 180 on the freeway (and there's no reason it shouldn't given that you don't tow), do you really need a 37? Is this going to be a show truck? If so, is she also your daily driver? Generally speaking, those two goals are completely at odds with each other. Again, I'm not being critical or trying to bag on you in any way. I'm just not sure what you're trying to build. I'm an old fart and I'm not on the interwebs every day so I'm sure I missed something somewhere. It's just that without having a concept of what the end game is supposed to be makes it very difficult for me to suss out what needs to be done. That makes it hard for me to either learn something new or maybe offer advice on what could be done. It may be that it's obvious to some of the younger folks here. Again, old fart. Ol' timers disease. Whatever you're building, best of luck to you and be safe.
@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 4 года назад
I wouldn’t say I have a specific goal for it. Definitely don’t plan on making it a “show truck” or a “mudder”. It’s just been my dream truck since I was a teenager and now I’m just having fun building it, learning new things, constantly adding cool stuff, and building my RU-vid channel in the mean time. A big goal would be to make this channel huge and maybe get free parts and make good money. I already make a bit off the channel but not nearly enough to cover how much I spend on the truck, but hey I get some back. Maybe one day I’ll make more off my RU-vid channel then I spend on the truck, and hopefully even have other projects and builds for the channel.
