Christian Williams departs Oahu singlehanded for Los Angeles after delay by gale trade winds. For daily noon position reports and breadcrumb trail, click here: www.olmsteadwilliams.com/chri... Full video in September.
My children watch with me often. They asked at dinner last night, “did Christian make it to Hawaii yet?”. Lol. You have a multigenerational fan club sir!
Hi Christian, I'm really enjoying the material you're sharing. In my younger years, I sailed with my cousins and my uncle around southern California and I hope to purchase my own boat and sail to Hawaii or further. Thanks for posting your adventures as I'm learning a lot. Cheers!
Hey Christian, enjoy watching your videos while tying fishing jigs (part time business), never been in a sailboat, I'm a power boater fisherman. The reason for my comment is loved your old 8mm footage. I'm 76 and have been fishing Raritan Bay, Sandy Hook since the 50's. I know that Light house at the arthur kill so well, belongs to the Keasby Outboard Motor Club for many year just up river. Just had a full knee replacement April 20 and I'm getting back out on my boat. Currently launch at the Rumson Muni Ramp mostly but have a pass to the Sayreville ramp up the Raritan river. Again the old footage is exactly the same growing up as you. Hoping we can still stay out on the water for years to come. I know I treasure every time i'm on the water because I know my time and tides are getting shorter. Will continue to enjoy your vids, especially loved the Philosophy of Sailing it just gives us a compass setting to follow in life. Fair skies and following wind ! .......Walt MIddlesex, NJ
Thanks so much for being you and for your sharing of a few of the marvelous things that includes. Looking forward to video of your sail to HI, best of luck on the ride home.
Following daily your noon position reports & breadcrumb trail -- thank you so much Tracy for allowing us to share in the progress! Sending you luck, a good wind slant, and my admiration!!
Not a big jazz fan, more of a blues guy, but I have been listening to his book on audio and I’m a big fan. This guy can write. Now I have have to purchase his other books. Nice going Christian .
Hey Mr. Williams, I think it’s so cool that my wife and I are in Hanalei bay about to make our crossing back to Oxnard Channel Islands harbor and you are in Oahu also about to head back. Yes the winds and seas have been big for several weeks now. Your videos and book have Inspired me to make this trip. This is my first big crossing. We will be heading out 8/13 we hear that the winds may die down a bit this weekend. SV_Rumbylowe
I thoroughly enjoy everything you post thank you for your words and knowledge I’ve never sailed but just listening to you explain the technical work and beauty of it is encouraging me to try it I’m afraid I’ll fall in love
update 28th of July: Steady 30 knots on tight beam reach under 200 square feet of jib alone. Seas moderate, which helps. Sky gray marine layer. Predominate is howl of wind in rigging and occasional bomb of wave crest bursting against windward hull. Cabin warm and I have indulged in set of dry clothes. Have read all the books and now rely on audiobooks, which move too slowly. There is a speed-up button but result is Minnie Mouse. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Set ship's clock ahead one hour.
I imagine those Martinis are as dry and congenial as your remarkable sense of humor. Your videos always improve my day. May your journeys be safe, the wind be at your back and may your adventures continue long into the future.
Your expression at the end of this vlog ‘Says it all’ …….we shall see? Best wishes for the voyage, you deserve to succeed.Thelonious ll looks in good shape.
Missed your departure and trip there, so it is a surprise to see you in O'ahu . Nothing to fear though, indeed the cerebral circuitry of RU-vid delivered you safely once again - here/there around about and back again to the gathering place, gathering what? Memories, fulfilled dreams, dreams of dreams we will find out soon enough, when you find that place that does not move and treat us to another missive. Good luck with that in California. Hope the trip back is memorable in a good way, and that the Hendricks gin and crab cakes were a fortuitous collaboration. Fair winds. Aloha
Make sure to hang on tight to the wheel as you leave. I have heard of boats losing the steering pedestal leaving Hawaii! Can't wait to see the full videos! Fair winds!
update 24th of August: Motored another 24 hours and this morning picked up a light wind from astern, so at the moment we roll prettily downwind with full sail spread both sides of the boat. Only 3 or 4 knots speed, but a respite from the diesel noise and preservation of fuel for the predicted light headwinds ahead. My tactical course plans fill a notebook of intention based on supposition, the defeat of calms by human will. There goes a fulmar overhead--I think he's grinning but I don't get the joke. Are we not the dominant species?
I vividly recall the occasional stormy blast and enormous swells on an LA-Hilo run after a sail down the coast from Vancouver. Twenty-nine days -- good times.
Update Aug 30: 24 Hour gale of 35 G40 appears abating. Vane steering sheared another eyebolt, hove to at dawn and made temp repair I think will hold. Anchor chocks on bow carried away result of continual plunging but not significant issue. Wave height 10-12 but not aggressively cresting. Sun is out at the moment giving a pretty glorious oceanscape in electric blue, and maybe it will dry us out a bit. -- Position: 36 14'09.07 N, 129 32'55.75 W Course: + 161.61, Speed: + 3
Noon position, Day 8, August 16, 2021 description Tacked east again at dawn after 24 hours NNW into 30 knots and 6 foot seas. We don't pound, a deafening slapping of the hull common to racier boats, but there is still the Slam. It comes from an 8-ton hull launching off a wave and falling into the trough ahead. Chichester said the explosive sound reminded him of the Blitz. For us it feels like being backed into by a dump truck. Bam! unpredictably a dozen times an hour. Predictions suggest relief tomorrow with an angle to take us north. -- Position: 29 50'17.56 N, 153 28'37.30 W Course: + 112.81, Speed: + 7
Sorry to see you leave the islands so soon. Yes, the trade winds have been harsh the last couple years, ever since it was announced global warmth was predicted to suppress them. It must be force 3 even inside my home, so I can sail toy boats in my bathtub.
Welcome home to Los Angeles Christian! I'm wondering how long does it take to get your balance back? I would go sailing for just a few hours and it took a day to recover. Thanks for sharing your journey, it's really inspiring.
The way you speak I swear you could read books on audio or be the narrator of a movie with a deep story... But I of course enjoy all the content and your knowledge. Thanks
Christian, thank you for your videos, I am also a So Cal sailor out of Marina del Rey and I have learned so much from you. I reviewed your videos regarding multi hull sailing / racing, they were great. I am curious why you seem to prefer mono hull vessels today. I currently sail a F-31 trimaran, I am not on your level and have no where near your experience, with only local day sailing and trips to Catalina. What are you thoughts on multis today? Dan
I give them a wide berth. Seriously, I don't need to go that fast, and although not heeling much is a real boon, monohulls fit in a slip. Today's high-speed cruising catamarans do everything well, and are not necessarily grotesque. In my opinion Lagoon has perfected grotesque, although they work well if you're on one, and don't have to look at it.
Happy sails to you...Until we meet again....An no l am not Roy Rogers...Most people don't know who he was or the song he always sang at the end of his show's
If sailing doesn't pan out, you do have a brilliant career in comedy ahead of you. You do owe me some tea though, quite a bit went flying thru my nose with the finishing grimmase you did.
