UPDATE! These Brush Nibs Have Me Stumped! NEW Everblend Ultra BRUSH Markers Review & Comparison

Shortly after filming my comparison video of the original Arteza Everblend markers and the new Everblend Ultra markers I received the Everblend Ultra Brush markers to try out. The new Arteza Everblend Ultra Brush marker have a brush tip on one end and a slightly smaller chisel tip on the other (vs the bullet/chisel on the classic Everblends) You can see all of the ever blend sets on the Arteza Website shrsl.com/2z9lm (affiliate links)
Some sets available on Amazon: amzn.to/3yzgtkm
Pros:
Brush tip and chisel tip
*Replaceable nibs (Brush nibs will be released in September)
Ink blends well
Matches Everblend Ultra set colors (currently there are 36 colors available in the brush format, but they are unsure when they will release more colors)
Caps are easy to remove
Color names printed on marker barrel
The packaging is sturdy storage so you won't need to buy an organization system.
Cons:
Currently only 36 colors (as of 6/1/21)
They are pricier than other budget-friendly markers but if the nibs are rubber that would justify it.
One other concern to note, maybe? I suspected the nib is a compressed fiber as opposed to a foam rubber (like copic) however the Arteza websites says they are a rubber brush nib. I compared these brush nibs with the other foam rubber style nib markers I own and they are stiffer than the other brands, most similar to Art-n-Fly. It is a bit more flexible than Ohuhu (fiber nib) but not as flexible as Copic (rubber nib) for reference. The reason I suspected that these might be fiber nibs is the stiffness of the nib and how it feels dryer and the tip gets lighter after some coloring. I have not experienced any fraying and the markers may become more flexible with use given that I compared them with markers I have been using for a while. Another nit I am going to pick is the fact that in the description on Arteza it says replacement nibs are included (mine did not have extra nibs) but the photos on the website say "additional nibs not included" so I think it was probably a case of copy and pasting info from their acrylic markers which did come with additional nibs. I think it is a mistake. But if that mistake was made I wonder if they also might have made a mistake calling the nibs rubber knowing that artists prefer that kind of nib.
Bottom Line: These really blend nicely and you get a nice variety of colors in the tropical set. They have smaller 12 packs if you want to try them out with less of an investment as well. Keep in mind, if the sets run like the classic Everblend Ultras you will have duplicated in the smaller packs so you might want to wait for the large 144 sets to be released if you want to have all of the colors. If you are used the Everblend Ultra color system and you want to add a brush marker to it I highly recommend them. Plus I love that you can just combine all of the inserts from the storage box to make a sturdy wall of markers if you like.

I was curious as to why it is cooler colours are harder to blend (true for all alcohol markers) but it’s not the case with waterbased dye media, so I googled a bit. I thought maybe the dye chemistry would reveal it but *apparently* it’s to do with how when you go over a dark or dark-to-medium blend with your lighter colour, those blue-toned dyes tend to separate out of the mixture and become blotchy which you see as a poor blend. Kind of makes some sense as all the blue alcohol-soluble dyes used have a common feature and that would impact their partitioning (back to that in a moment) and of course your cool reds are really “‘midtone red plus varying amounts of blue” in dye-based media. That partitioning I mention is simply how much a dye molecule likes iso-propanol versus paper (and will vary with specialist papers) and dyes that prefer iso-propanol will come off of the paper when gone over with a lighter colour, go back into solution and dry blotchy/patchy/streaky. The ones like prefer the paper don’t budge when gone over with a lighter colour unless you really work them.

Really interesting stuff. Another thing I notice is a color shift from wet to dry in pink-purple tones with them trying cooler in temperature. It's strange but happens across all brands.

@@thefrugalcrafter Same principal - the partition constants that put numbers on affinity for X vs Y (solvent vs stationary phase I.e. paper) change in relation to temperature, atmospheric pressure and whilst not relevant in art, pH.

Thank you for such thorough reviews. Foam rubber comes in different densities. It is highly possible these nibs are just more dense, and that makes them have a stiffer feel.

After seeing you compare the Arteza brush nib to Art and Fly nib I remembered seeing on the Art and Fly web site that their nibs were felt. Went to check and it says "made in Japan brush nibs made of double layered top grade felt." The Arteza sets are on lightning deal on Amazon today working out to around $1.30 a piece so wondering if they are worth it even if the nib is not the same type as some higher end markers.

Thank you for the review! Markers are not for me, I prefer media that are easier to mix colors with and that allow you to produce full-color images with a limited palette. You can make a watercolor painting to look like a marker illustration for a lower price, less storage room, AND it will be lightfast. So I’d rather look at other people using markers than do it myself;)

I purchased the entire set of brush markers. Very satisfied with the quality but disappointed in my experience so far. Started working on a decently sized piece (11x14), and during coloring the markers started leaking. I stopped immediately and waited for the juiciness to stop and go back. Started to color again, and same thing. Not sure if it's the markers I have are a bad bunch or that happens regularly. I have Winsor and Newton pro brushmarkers and they've never done that along with the two sets of Copic Ciao I have. Is it my luck?

Could I ask for a ranking (or a scale 1-10) of foam brush nib firmness across brands? I've bought copic brush nibs to replace the old fiber nibs in my old style spectrum noirs but found them too soft for my heavy-handed style. I liked the Blick brush nibs better but if these are even firmer (and potentially cheaper) than Blick, they might be a better option for me once the replacement nibs are available. Thank you for all your reviews, Lindsay!

Always love a marker video! I have a question and I'm not sure anyone will know the answer, but I recently picked up some cheapo markers (Soho Studio) on sale at Ross of all places, and based on the names and numbers I was SURE they were on the ShinHan touch color system and that I'd be able to refill them. But swatched out and compared to ShinHan and the few Art-n-Fly I have, they're CLOSE or at least always in the same color family but not true matches. Do you think this is because of a quality control issue maybe mixing inks in the cheaper markers' manufacturing? Or are ShinHan inks just not as consistent as Copic? It's a bummer because I actually like the Soho colors a lot!

If they are darker some if the alcohol might have evaporated or their could be inconstant quality.

Love your review. I am currently debating between the fine nib and brush nib. Which of the two do you actually prefer? The brush nib, I never thought it was a foam nib and stiffer (?). I thought the brush nib would be softer and easier to blend thinking they were soft BRUSHES. I AM New on alcohol markers. Which of the two would create a smoother transition (no marker marks). Thank you in advance for your prompt response. What paper would u highly recommend for alcohol based markers?thanks for this review. Very informative.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 года назад
I use both kinds but prefer a brush nib and for beginners a brush nib is easier to learn with. Alcohol brush nibs can be felt like or foam rubber like but not bristles like water based markers can offer due to the nature of the ink.

Though it’s a foam like brush which is still easier to blend and good for beginners like me, I will lean to that person your advise. Thank you. Glad to hear it has gone down, but when using them I was wondering when the ink you got seemed to be the same as cheaper colors, etc. But what you said made sense. I got a set to review the other day that was 6 brush markers from Japan for around $40. I have been doing my usual tests and can't figure out why they are considered so good.
