UPDATE : Van Staal VR50 Spinning Reel | J&H Tackle 

I bought one of these after running through my old pen slammers, quantum caabo, old penn 4500ss, and various other reels beach fishing here in SW Florida. Which I do a lot. The spool c clip holding the bail to the main shaft rusted and fused the spool onto the shaft causing the shaft to snap within a year. I read this is a common problem covered under warranty due to the fact the C clip isn't SS. Unfortunately Zebco sold Van Staal at the time and I was unable figure out exactly where to send the reel to to be worked on, and the warranty expired that month. I bought a Penn Slammer 3 to replace it. I liked the VR very much, until it broke, and I didn't. Despite the gears wearing and feeling sloppy/developing noise, the rinkydink cast aluminum bails bending out of whack, and the plastic cheapo drag clickers breaking and failing on both spools within weeks. I absolutely love the Slammer 3 and feel the Slammer 3 is a superior reel for half the price. It's more durable, better craftsmanship, and it's smoother. The VR did have more line capacity and I landed countless 30-38" snook on 1 oz lures with the VR50, but I paid the 500+ bucks for the VR50 for a surf reel that would not break. And it did. Within a year. I heard countless horror stories about the VR from others who's reels were getting repaired after very little use, always surprised my VR had no issues yet. I loved the thought of the VR being waterproof. Unfortunately this turned out to be not the case. A steel C-Clip holding the bail on that rusts out and causes failure? Come on Zebco. Classic purchase a brandname, pimp it out, and dump it Zebco move. Might have better luck with the $800 VS models, not sure. If I take up skishing one day, purchase and break every single other sealed reel on the market, I might give the VS a try.

Im about to buy a VR50 but do you think it will pair up good with a 9ft Bass Pro Ocean Master? Its Medium 15-30 lbs. 1 - 3 oz. I have read the vr50 have alot of problems also with bail.

Size comparison? Which one is bigger? The VR50 or the VS100?

Hi Josh, being fully sealed how smooth is it. I fish for Snook and Redfish on the flats in Florida using a SUP, would this be a great reel for that application. I love my Stradics but they get dunked once in awhile. Your recommendation would be appreciated.
