Hearing interpreter here. The BIG thing we learn in ITP programs is that you do NOT accept work if you have any doubts that you can do it. I respect that deaf interpreters might be wanted by the deaf community, but I've interpreted a lot of concerts by well known artists/musicians. We're usually given a general set list perhaps as much as a month or so ahead. HOWEVER, with experience, any interpreter knows that the set list can change only days or hours before the performance. This is why interpreters who do concerts will not only prep the songs on the set list, but we also scour fan videos on social media to see what other songs the artists have sung in concerts recently, plus practice any other popular songs they have, even old classics! I was interpreting at a large music festival one time when one of my friends was on the interpreter platform interpreting for a well known group. They had the set list, practiced it as well as all other songs by that group, thank goodness. Because they started singing the first song on the set list, stopped half way through and said to the audience: "We're gonna just have fun and take requests from the audience for tonight!" You should have seen the looks on our faces (all the interpreters working this event), especially the one terp on stage!! But... because we're hearing, we were able to go with the flow and sign those songs even if they were songs we'd never heard before (a few were) but most were their older hits that we'd practiced, thank goodness, even though they weren't on the set list! If they insist on using Deaf performers for the halftime show, they need to have hearing interpreters to feed them in case it comes to this so that the Deaf community isn't left hanging. I. Don't mean to insult deaf interpreters or deaf performers by any means, but there's a reason we hearing interpreters exist-- to allow for equal access, which is the whole point of providing someone doing an ASL interpretation, is it not? I hope Shaheem will understand his limits and not accept work of this nature again, and hopefully NAD will set a standard to ensure this doesnt happen again, and that they have learned from this. Justina's performance can be found easily on RU-vid, but I've not found Shaheems. Perhaps the reason is that NAD realizes it was a disaster? I also hope they will advocate for doing PIP for next years performances. Ok, I've typed a book. Id better go and see if there are petitions i can sign!
Thanks for the updates. It helps me seeing different perspectives. I won’t buy any ILY stuff from that business. ILY belongs to everyone around the world!! She needs to be stripped away from the business.
Sounds like he’s shown his true colors more than once now. Asking a deaf artist for a copy of her audiogram after he’s already in hot water for the SB controversy? His attitude was about to blow up again in this interview defending his song-signing skills. He just can’t seem to restrain himself. He said he couldn’t do it in two days and took the job anyway instead of recommending or deferring to someone else who might have been better-suited and prepared for the job due to better skills and experience.
ha shaheem said it is impossbile for a deaf person to learning all that just two days before the super bowl. i think that is funny because look at Justina Miles lol. SHE DID IT! also, he said other things. that seem he haven't changed yet. i feel bad for him. unfortunately
I think the only issue here was talking the job of an interpreter without being an interpreter. Logically speaking, one would never step in for a specialist with out having specialized training first. Food for thought.
I understand he hasn't time for 2 days before Super Bowl, but still not talent asl music. Also, dont bring your friend as 'interpreter' who has no certificate interpreter. NAD is still the same apologies old time, and they dont really change to anything...
Im a hearing person learning ASL. Personally, Shaheen should have had hire a PR and taught him when you did something wrong and trying to apologize the interview should be calm and regretfully. His body language in this interview is screaming im not wrong im just pretending or say im sorry for what I did, so they can leave me alone. He added fuel to the fire. I see why the Deaf community won't accept his apology.
Ain't going to accept nad apology until we see big improvement by get full action with NFL and other tv company also NFL and TV company should give people ASL sign language a time to memory the words and performance im advance than end up short time zone or last minute also CEO of nad should take full responsibility to apologize than make other staffs to apologize for CEO's mistake or error that is CEO responsibility to do also NFL owe us a apologize too since Shaheen try to follow what book tell him to what say and sing and dances make it feel alive and interesting in my opinion
Thanks for the clarifications. I appreciated with Shaheem and his transparency and got me better understood him. I forgive him and move on. Let us continue to support Shaheem and his arts including dance, music and performance.
I did comment here. But Other things I want to say… shaheem said he isn’t only a dancer. He can do asl music too. Everybody can do dancer or asl music. Alex was talking about asl performer. Shaheem know better. Actually he haven’t say a word is apology in the video at all
Is that petition still up for me so sign, as well? As an HOH who inderstands having hearing loss, I'd like to sign it. I wpuld also like to sign it in advocacy for other HOH people and for d/Deaf people. If yes, please respond to my comment with the link to it.
Did President Jenny watch Super Bowl? Why she apologize? I wonder Super Bowl have huge TV outside so deaf performers can see themselves to let deaf people watch at home. Next year where Super Bowl 59 be, check the TV stations to prepare for deaf performers as early months but I know difficult, have them practice early.
NAD’s public apology video’s totally weak also it’s “we got your message and now shut the f__ up”, no remorseful, no understanding at all. to me she seem to be forced to do it by NAD / CEO! Please do better than that! As for shaheem, he kinda ‘bullsh*tting” with Alex in the interview, he got greedy by fame and $$ in his eyes and think he didn’t expect that he will get caught because he think he’s untouchable but got trapped by deaf community and trying to slime his way out of “accountability”, again: no remorse, no understanding, nothing at all! (With his CBS news interview: he said he always do sign song with Usher’s songs for years but he failed to deliver it which it conflicts with his statement that he need more time to learn the song?) #Hawkeyes (it shown that he didn’t learnt after the interview by accusing jay re: audiogram evidence, which it said it al about his character - narcissistic!) ILY: she should rip the trademark up and make a huge donation to deaf communities to make it official apology and allow deaf artists to use “ILY” logo as it’s belong to all of us as it’s OUR LANGUAGE! Please reconsider your position in deaf world as I am from UK and feel embarrassed of your selfish action, some deaf organisations in UK are gobsmacked of your lawsuits against deaf artists! If no action taken, it will happens again, again, again… Hope you all will sort it out as soon as possible and let the wounds heal by unity to support each other in deaf communities around in USA and rise the sign language up again (oralism are winning for long time cos we fight against each other instead fight against them) #WakeUpPeeps
It's sad to see how toxic the deaf community is. When someone tries to become a better version of themselves they are judged and dragged down again and then stepped on. Hope you Shaheem don't let them stop you! Pursue your passion! 🤟
Alex, you didn't ask Shaheem about flinching on video? Feels bad on Deaf people who has still bullied without find happiness if he performs like that. :(
Shaheem sançhez talking nonsense he should not offended to deaf communities .. alexis kasher shouldnt be selfish for her own jewelry business. She cant insulting other deaf business to take it down ...
For the business, love sign asl, she has started to limit interactions in her instragram comment section, allowing no discussion or room for feedback. I posted a comment calling out her behavior and lack of proper advocacy as a civil rights lawyer and she deleted it!! Wow..
