A couple of days ago, I put out a video on how to update ETHOS. It appears though I may have been going too fast for people who aren't computer literate. So here is a slower version, explaining all that you need to know to complete this process. I hope you will find this process easier with this video.

** Update **
The naming of the SD card and FLASH drive contents is changing. From version 1.0.11 onwards, if you are using a Tandem transmitter (currently X20 and X20S) you should download the TANDEM_FLASH and TANDEM_SD files.
Between 1.0.6 and 1.0.10 they had been named X20_SD and X20_FLASH, which caused confusion. People thought it was just for that transmitter, and not for the X20S also.

** Update ** The naming of the SD card and FLASH drive contents is changing. From version 1.0.11 onwards, if you are using a Tandem transmitter (currently X20 and X20S) you should download the TANDEM_FLASH and TANDEM_SD files. Between 1.0.6 and 1.0.10 they had been named X20_SD and X20_FLASH, which caused confusion. People thought it was just for that transmitter, and not for the X20S also.

Yeah this caught me out, until someone on FB mentioned downloading the TANDEM files, then it clicked for me. No issues on the radio display if you forget though, but safer to update the SD and FLASH files anyway. On a side note, I noticed that the firmware.bin firmware file that is downloaded on the SD card, disappears from the SD card once the radio uploads it. No issues, actually good so older firmwares don’t get confused with the current one.

The file names have literally just changed with this latest version (1.0.11). It’s my fault too as I was hearing about the old names confusing people. So suggested they make this change. Yes, once the firmware update takes place, the firmware.bin file is deleted.

Hi MrD, I just bought the Twin X Lite which doesn't come with an SD card. I put a new one in but it seems it doesn't work properly. I can't find how to format the sd card so the folders and radio.bin file appears properly - please help =) Best Mat

Thank you so much! I thought I was ok on a PC but was struggling. Also your update regarding the flash and SD card name changes was a huge help. I think these small changes here and there and all the instructions being a little different as they evolve makes it tough. With this latest video, I went right thru the update!

I generally manage to bumble through when I have to, but it would not be possible without help from people like yourself. I’m looking into a new radio at the moment, and am looking hard at the X20S. great response to a comment … even though I am not involved , have not got it and might buy one Chrismas this year or next year just to give it a chance - even though I still would prefer to see a phone holder in that spot instead of a cheap display. Phone displays are usually better. But time will tell till I get one in my hands.

Thanks Wolf. At the end of the day, I want to help people. So if I can do better, I will. Personally, I prefer the transmitter screen over my phone. Better aspect ratio to use with the transmitter features. It works well in all light conditions too.

This is pretty old now. You should check out ETHOS Suite. It makes updates much easier.

Great video! Very thorough and very informative. I have been looking at the X20S but even though I am computer savvy, updating firmware is always a bit nerve racking, especially with a lack of direction from the product manual. This video makes me feel more comfy making the jump to FrSky. Thanks for the part 2 video 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍

You're welcome Chris. I'm glad it was helpful. It isn't a difficult process. Though I'm hoping that in the future a PC companion application will appear, to make things like the firmware updates and backing up and restoring models much simpler.

Unfortunately not Chris. What's worse is I'm sure I've seen it somewhere in the past. I would guess the minimum would be 60, as that is the minimum with OpenTX. Most limits in OpenTX have doubled in ETHOS (number of channels and logic etc), so I can't see them allowing any less than that.

Mr. D, I just want to say...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! I finally got the Tandem to update you explain everything perfectly for me to understand! One thing I notice on downloading X20S-FCC, the files came up with the OpenTX logo which really confused me because I`m not using OpenTX, and the firmware folder looked different from the video, however, somehow I was able to get the Tandem to update to Release 1.0.7, good job my friend keep up the good work, please make a video on programming an Airplane, rates, weights, etc! That’s great Bobby, I’m glad the video helped. Though that is strange about the OpenTX logo, that would have confused me as well 😄 I have some extra folders on the SD card of my X20S for things like audio and firmware updates. So that may be why it looked different. The video that’s out on Friday will have expo, rates, throttle cut, and differential covered.

The actual file locations on the transmitter and process will be the same. But you’ll be using finder I guess to do all the file transfers. Unfortunately I don’t have a Mac, so don’t know the details involved. The key will be working out which is the flash drive and which is the SD card.

If your module isn’t on the latest version. It is worth updating. There are some important fixes in 2.1.8. of the RF module.

This will be my first update, seems pretty simple. Quick question, I’ve never had to do updates before coming from Futaba so this is all new to me. When I update software on the transmitter, do you also have to update your receivers? Hope this is not a stupid question. Also does this have the potential to wipe out all the models you already have programmed on your radio?

Hi Jonny. Questions like that are never stupid. No, the RF firmware is separate to ETHOS. At the moment, ETHOS Suite does not update the RF firmware; though this may change in the future. You can check the version of your RF firmware in the System -> Info screen on your transmitter. You need to have the internal RF module enabled. Then it will show you the FW version of the module. If you have any ACCESS or TANDEM receivers active. It will also show the firmware version of those receivers. If you look up your transmitter on www.frsky-rc.com/ and go to the downloads page for your transmitter. The latest version of the RF firmware will be found there in the "RF FIRMWARE - TD Module" section. If you update this, you should also update your receivers. There is always a risk that something can go wrong in an update. No matter how rare. It is always worth taking a backup of the models on your transmitter before updating. I've only had a problem once, on a much older firmware update. Backing up your models is now really easy with ETHOS Suite. Daren Nice work man! I have a request. Could you please make a follow up video on flashing the x20s Ethos Tx using the SD card method? It just seems like a good alternative. Some of us zone out when we hear “bootloader.

I can’t find any reference to this method. As far as I know, you can only flash ETHOS by putting the firmware.bin file in the root of the MicroSD card. Or are you simply meaning removing the MicroSD card, putting that in the computer, and copying the files across that way? The bootloader mode is nothing to fear. For small changes, it’s much quicker than pulling the MicroSD card.

Yes, leave it in there. The only time I would take it out is for transferring larger or lots of files. Only because it’s faster.

This is also my first experience with Frsky coming from JR. Is the Frsky receivers the only ones I can use with this transmitter? I'll also search for your transmitter firmware update video. Seems like I saw that when looking for help on the transmitter.

With the X20, you’re best off sticking with FrSky receivers. There may be lite JR bay multi-protocol modules available. But I don’t believe you’d be able to use them with ETHOS. The multi-protocol modules may not support JR receivers either.

I noticed that when you moved the downloaded files from the desktop to the Flash and SD drives they in the .zip format - - so do they get unzipped automatically when the files are moved over to the two Tx drives...joe

Hi Joe. I open the zip files and drag the contents of the zip files over. When Windows transfers the files, it unzips them before storing them on the X20 drives However, if you were to not open the zip file. Window would just copy the zip file. The key is to open the archive and copy the contents over.

Hi Marchand. You can upgrade to the latest version. However, the process is a little different. I will be making a video on how to perform the update soon. My current video is only for up to the 1.1.14 version. The 1.2 version need a little more work for the first update.

If the file isn’t there in that version, you’d need to look in the older version. But, these days your should only need to use ETHOS Suite to perform the updates. It is much easier.

Have you tried to copy files onto a Sandisc in your pic then place it into the sd slot of your transmitter and update files that way?

Hi Darren, Excellent tutorials thanks, you have really helped me. However, with the release of version 1.1.1 I am now confused. I have an X20S and there are 5 relevant .zip files in this release. I know that you told us that after Vers. 1.0111 the files would be named TANDEM FLASH.zip & TANDEM_SD.zip, but as well as those, there are also; X20S-EU.zip, X20S-FLEX.zip and X20S-IL.zip. What should we do with the X20-FLEX.zip & X20S IL.zip and do we need to download the X20S-EU as well as the TANDEM FLASH.zip & TANDEM_SD.zip??? - Thanks in advance for your support.

Hi Geoff, the X20-FLEX and -IL files are for different modes of the RF module. FLEX enables the flex features of R9, which allows the pilot to select the power and frequency to. I believe IL file is for Israel. With 1.1.x you also need to download the audio zip file. I have a video out on Sunday for updating to 1.1.x which may help too.

How much do you charge to fly the US and put the updates on my x20? :) I don't even have the radio yet and I'm a little worried it could be above my computer abilities

That would depend on how cheap the flights are and the cost of an average hotel for a few days 🤣 If you take your time, I’m sure you’ll be fine. Check out the video description, as the zip file names have changed. Good luck 👍🏻

Is it possible to change an X20 EU transmitter to an FCC transmitter by selecting the correct firmware?

Yes. But you would also need to run an external 915MHz antenna, or replace the handle with the FCC version to use the internal antenna. 868MHz and 915MHz have different antenna lengths.

I've got a X20S with 1.0.17 EU version. I don't know through which version I have to go to get the latest update, or if I can go straight away from 1.0.17 to the latest. I found the 1.2.11 version Thanks for your help Frederic

Hi Frederic. I would take a backup and update to version 1.1.4, After that you can follow my video to install version 1.2. At this point in time, I would recommend updating to 1.2.10 as the latest version. There have been a few issues found in 1.2.11 which will be fixed in 1.2.12.

@@fredericgrob384 As you are just going to install 1.2.10, I wouldn’t worry about those files. Just get 1.1.4 installed so that the bootloader can be updated to 1.2.10. Then install everything for 1.2.10, which will be SD Card, Flash, and the audio files. But ETHOS suite should take care of those for you.

@@MrD Hi, thanks for your quick feedback. My transmiter is now in 1.1.4 version as you suggested it to me. I'm trying to upgrade it to 1.2.10 as you proposed to me. But in the file list of 1.2.10 I can't find the Tandem SD & flash files. Where should I download it ?

Hi there, Ive just been through the update procedure as shown above. However now my screen on the X20s does not show any of the bottom line logos! System, Configure, Models and the model choice are all blank. The time is still showing and correct. Any suggestions how to recover this? Tell me where I went wrong! Please anyone, feel free to chip in with genuine suggestions and hopefully a walkthrough. Cause I am obviously not a natural at this computing lark. Firmware is now 1.2,6, EU 7c0ba7bs Internal module is HW:1.4.0 FW:2.2.1 (EU-LBT)

Hi Ron. I've not yet got up to speed with 1.2, as for a while it has been in a flux state. Now it is officially a stable release, I will look in to the upgrade process and make some videos on this. I can only imagine that some of the image files are missing. I would check the X20_FLASH.zip file contents were copied on to the flash drive. I have a feeling that may be the problem.

@@MrD with help from another of your videos, I’ve sorted out the correct place to put my Amber sounds now. My error was dumping a “folder” rather than all Amber sounds, to the root of the audio folder. I had the right directory, just the error of putting a folder in there …. Oops. Still interested in an audio video though.

Just let ETHOS Suite do the work. That will get you updated. It would be worth taking a backup first. Just in case.

I just went through updating the firmware on my X20S for the second time. Idk about you but why is it so complicated? Every other radio I've done this on, you go to (the actual manufacturer's) website, download one (ONE) file, then drag and drop it into the radio and boom, you're done.

Hello, I did the update of the x20 firmware and it was great, what I can't do, is that it functions the special functions since it does not find the wav files when I assign the switches, could you help me

You probably have them in the wrong folder. Check out my 5 differences between OpenTX and ETHOS video. That shows where the sound files should go.

If the files are just in the /audio/ folder, it could be that they are not in the correct format. I’ll get the details soon, when I’m at my computer.

The wav files need to be at 32000Hz and exported as 16bit files. The will also have a filename character limit, which I've not tested in ETHOS. OpenTX was limited to 6 characters, and that is also fine in ETHOS. Basically, and WAV file that worked in OpenTX should also work in ETHOS.

Hi John. If it doesn't show up, the first thing that I would try is a different USB C data cable. The cable that comes with the transmitter is not the best. Mine did not connect sometimes.

I made a first update of my station from version 1.0.4 to 1.0.11 with success, but now that I try to update to new versions 1.0.19 for example, once I disconnect the usb cable the update does not load, and bootloader appears . In all honesty, don’t worry about that version. In the video description, there is a link for a more recent video to update to version 1.2. Follow that video, but install the bootloader from version 1.2.11, then use ETHOS Suite to update to 1.3.2.

@@MrD Greetings Mr. D. I have tried as you indicated, to install the bootloader, but from the station I do not have the option to flash bootloader, it only appears in the bootloader.frsk folder (installed from PC as you indicated) copy-move-delete. Thanks again.

@@domingodiazgonzalezdiax8924 you need to update to 1.1.4 at least to get the bootloader update option. That is shown in the video.
