You might not completely notice it while playing, but you ARE getting much better! Each of three "mid game" levels quietly teaches you about sand and stone blocks, and also the ability to cancel out of a shovel drop (by attacking midair) -- without which you couldn't possibly have survived the volcano block puzzles. Good game/level design tends to feel invisible.
