Upgrading a 2005 laptop: IDE SSD Upgrade, Lubuntu 18.04 32-bit OS (HP Pavilion) 

CORRECTION: The HP Pavilion originally had 512mb RAM (2 x 256mb sticks). So it's a relatively significant upgrade going into 2GB. 🥳 This old laptop wouldnt boot to USB so I had to install EasyBCD PLOP Boot Manager (the free non-commercial version) to the old Windows 7 so it could recognize the Lubuntu installer. Best option will be to install an ssd via using an adapter which swaps the dvd port. Also check for cpu model and see if cpu port is suitable for a newer chipset.

*NEVER* throw away old tech. While the companies themselves say it’s useless and to just buy a new one, but you can actually save a lot of money by fixing it up, reinstalling the OS, and getting new parts. Also old tech has always fascinated me so I may be wrong lol

Fact: old laptops like this have un-soldered CPU. It uses a socket like motherboards. You can upgrade it with a powerful processor

My ThinkPad R61 from 2007 runs Linux Mint, and it holds its own against newer basic laptops. I can watch RU-vid vids, edit on WordPress, browse Facebook, and download large files at fast speeds. That last one comes in handy when making bootable USBs, which I can do without looking for a 3rd party app. Along with reducing e-waste, old laptops are great tinkering projects.👍🏽

I bought an old office pc with an i5 3470S, 4GB RAM and a 256gb SSD. I installed Linux Mint on it and the pc runs great. It's perfectly adequate for browsing, RU-vid, social media, Netflix, Libre Office and simple image editing with Gimp. And that's all I do with it. And all for less than €50

On old laptops and PCs with 32-bit processor architecture we now put a debian-based distro (antiX, peppermint, or sparky, etc.) or even debian itself and then choose some lightweight desktop environment (lxde for example) . Ubuntu stopped providing 32-bit systems from 18.04 onwards. 18.04 stopped being supported in 2021, so it doesn't get security and software updates and practically it's very difficult to install new apps on it since the software repositories of version 18.04 are dead and software developers no longer provide software that supports this version ...

I agree, giving a second life to old tech is the way to have less landfill tech trash, also it seems to be good for a (elementary school) kid to do homework (use it as some kimd of "desktop" ) or a grandma to browse facebook and IG. The point is: Great job!

I have a 2009 Toshiba Satellite with max ram (2 sticks of 4gb DDR2), a 500gb ssd, a 16gb sd card with readyboost enabled, but I feel like I could swap the motherboard and cooler with the stuff from another model or solder a new core in to bolster performace even more. I want to make it work, it's such a beautiful laptop, and it's just like the one I used as a kid lol.

Keep it. Sometimes, on newer hardware, applications on that computer will refuse to work or will run badly.

I don't know why some folks hate on older laps. They're perfect for the hobbyist looking to fix up old tech or for the broke student just needing something to write papers on. The old lap is not necessarily your go-to laptop but can be a great secondary machine when you don't want to use your newer, main machine. I don't know why more folks don't keep at least one old lap around.

I had a 2009 Panasonic laptop and I installed lubuntu and I extended the life of the old laptop which my mom uses as her social media and youtube daily driver. She only uses linux and social media.

As long as the latest linux can be installed, it's always a good server option. Most modems and routers only needs 2 cores.

Ubuntu might've been too reaource intensive. Im sure a lighter distro like puppy linux would've been a breeze even for 2005 hardware.

SSDs make a world of difference. I'm currently rocking a Thinkpad T420 and it does so well with even the basic and mundane SSD I put inside of it. SSDs alone change the game.

You can use arch on it to really boost it to current

I got a Dell XPS m1210 and installed Vista on it. Works like a charm. Also put XP media center on it.

I had that exact laptop back in the day. It ran blazing fast with ubuntu 10.04 back when that was current. Debian still has 32 bit support so it might be a better fit than lubuntu.

These laptops with the Harman Kardon speakers are fantastic for a dedicated music player

I feel like Becuase Linux is more lightweight you can still use that ide hard drive and it will work good enough, plus no money wasted and reusing potential e-waste, or is it just a horrible mess of stuttering

I use a 2006 Core 2 Duo laptop nearly every day as a second PC, using Linux and an SSD. It runs great with HD RU-vid videos. On eBay, you can easily find old laptops like this for less than $20...I even got an HP Elitebook with a Sandy Bridge i5 for $17.50.

I am also using Lubuntu 22.04 on my Lenovo laptop (2010 model, 2.5GHz CPU, 2GB Ram).

If it has an intel chipset there’s a possibility that you can run free bsd on it. Another option would be to run MX Linux on it (with either of the following desktop environments: xfce, lxqt, enlightenment or any other lightweight DE). Congrats by the way! Nice thinking for that SSD alternative!

If you still have it try installing antiX Linux 32 bit. Firefox run as if it was in any modern machine so anything you can do in firefox these days you can do in that old machine

I actually use a 15 year old pc for alot, i just changed the dying hdd to a samsung ssd, and it works perfectly! While it cant play newer games because of the processor and integrated graphics, its good for web browsing, watching movies and alot more, it also has alot of card slots like sd, micro sd, CF, ms pro and a few more

You made a huge mistake by slapping Linux on it. It seems perfectly new enough to run Windows 7, which you can still update to the latest update Microsoft has to offer, and then you can use a browser like supermium. Nobody is willing to figure out Linux especially if the computer lands in the hands of an older person who doesn't want to adapt to Linux.

The problems with old hardware like smartphones or laptops is that software evolve to the point where you system become unusable to meet modern applications requirements. Unlike gaming consoles, the software was made to run on that specific machine with a specific requirement so it will never slow down even if it is a 30-years old hardware as the machine only accept the specific version of software (game applications) to run on it.

There are even more lightweight Linux distros like bodhi Linux, or puppy Linux that require just 512mb of Ram and are better resource efficient as compared to lubuntu

I recommend installing tiny10 or tiny11, they are both supported by windows but reduced to bone so no bloatware or high requirements!

My current laptop that I still use to this day is 13 years old and back then this laptop was a flagship laptop and currently runs win10 runs games loads everything perfectly and I’m probably still gonna use it for another 13 years

I strongly ecommend you Loc-OS Linux distro... It's based on Debian but it's much more lightweight than Lubuntu and it also has 32-bit support.

Old computers should be upgradable to avoid electronic waste and help the environment. Apple and Microsoft only support security for a period of time making old computers obsolete, but Linux still make them useful.

Collect these items, keep them in a good condition, and one day they became ancient artifacts that cost a lot of money. Just look at prices for really old machines from 80-s and early 90-s

I asked my mom to give me her old laptop and it it a HP 15 db from 2019. Some keyboard keys didn't work and the battery was almost dead to the 10% of his capacity. I put the laptop EndevourOS and it's very quick because it has an SSD. I spent approximately $86 dollars fixing the laptop.

If I had that old beast, I'd use it exactly as it was meant to be, an absolute retro Windows XP-based gaming monster! Sure we could use emulators and patches on modern PCs, but playing old PC games on real hardware just feels better. Especially if said machine has a 4:3 screen, which this unit appears to have a 16:10 which is okay as well.

SSD is sold as well for USB usage starting from 10$ to 50$ is averagw SSD price on Aliexpress shop, well personally I was Wiped Disk by Parted Magic Linux and it runs agains in same time Ubuntu prefers install they Linux creating place for Windows in same time if Linux is installed first, Aliexpress provides with USB video cards as well USB RAM 64GB for some 30$.

i have a aspire 2930z which is manufactured year 2009 when my aunt gave me this laptop its very slow and its running on a windows 7 os i upgraded it to windows 10 and quite good but when i downgraded it into 8.1 everything is fast! start up boot and such so i recommend you guys dont upgrade it into win 10 os if u have a laptop like mine INTEL PENTIUM(R) DUAL CORE CPU T4200 4GB OF RAM

But how do you make that thing boot from a usb to install the system? I have 2 old laptops,one compaq presario 1500 from 2001 and a packard bell easynote R9020 from 2004 and none want to boot from usb(made with rufus)

on my old 2005 Acer Aspire 1690, I use Debian Bookworm with the Cinnamon desktop. 32 Bit Lubuntu doesn't even exist anymore...

With 2Gb ram you could even try Tiny10. With proper optimization it MIGHT run in an acceptable way. I know Linux is better for these cases, but some people need Microsoft-only software

I think you can Install Tiny 11 on the laptop (Tiny 11 is Windows 11 but without system requirements)

old laptops are totally good. i got a rare hp pavilion tx2000 for free and i just need to replace the keyboard and install windows and i can use it as a media center pc

I don't know if it's possible, but if you could upgrade that ram even further, you could probably do much more. My work PC was this 2nd generation Intel processor, no GPU and 2gb of ram, painfully slow. IT put an SSD to make it usable, but it didn't change much, so I begged than for weeks to upgrade the RAM, and they finally did it from 2gb to 12gb, and it went from water to wine.

If this were a core2duo 64bit, with a few ram upgrades, ssd, it could potentially be *usefull* on windows 11. My vostro 1400 core2duo runs usably windows 11

Meron akong lumang dell laptop from 2008 idk kung ano ung model nya with windows xp installed pero i reused my old laptop by replacing old hdd to 128gigs ssd and installing lite version of windows 7 and gumana talaga xia like new. Ganyan kasi ako mag alaga ng mga lumang gadgets.
