I think it's because they don't understand how bike geometry affects the way the bike feels and rides on the trails - and therefore how changing that intended geometry will not only not help, but will probably make the bike ride like trash. There are a lot of hardtail frames designed to have 160mm+ of travel in the front, but the angle of the headtube is much slacker than on the xc frames (which is normally 69-70 degrees).
"Did I miss anything." One thing - I watched this video before I bought my fork. Everything was on point of course. Unfortunately, the one thing missed is the change/upgrade in fork from a Rockshox to a Fox Fork and the lack of compatibility with the end hub caps. Of course, when I came upon this problem, it was your channel that immediately identified the problem and provided the solution. *The problem:* Rock Shox end hub cap, named "torque" end hub caps are 31mm in diameter. Fox Fork end hub caps, named "standard caps" are 21mm in diameter. *Solution:* Find a standard hub cap to fit my hub (my hub is a SRAM MTH 716, 15x110, Torque Cap, 32h). I have a 2001 kona stinky deluxe. Upgraded front and rear shock with fox shocks and rockshocks. Upgraded shifter kit, bars, breaks, hole drilled in swing arm to bring rear tire down an inch or 2, to bring the pedals off the ground. Upgraded 26" tires and rims. And yes, it shreds 🤙

Fox really kills it with their branding and designs. The fox suspensions on my 4runner look absolutely amazing in black and red and stand out over other similar companies. The fox bike suspensions look just as good with that orange with the gold color and design. Looks beautiful

My bike is from 1996 and it’s still fine with hydraulic brakes and a 1.1/8 steerer tube with a tapered headset adapter on it and the bike still feels great with 80% of original deore xtr parts still on it.
Some manufacturers are also offering damper upgrades. Fox for example sells the 36 Grip2 damper as a stand alone option to upgrade from Grip, Fit4, or RC2. You can send your fork in to Fox and have it done, or I'm sure many shops can perform the service as well. Also, changing the travel can be achieved very affordably by replacing the shaft in the airspring on most forks.
You are absolutely right! This video was more about when you replace the entire fork. But you are correct, there are tons of upgrades you can do to your existing fork by damper upgrade kits to air shafts etc.

can i fit rockshox on a shitty apollo phaze unisex 26in wheel 17in frame? i here there pritty good onlyreason i keep it was the heavy alloy frames strong for a ebike conversion i done but the front end will get me killed
I remember seeing my first suspension fork in like 91 or 92. Saw it at my at my LBS. Went straight home and pawned my Stratocaster guitar. It was a Rockshox Qaudra. Put it on my GT tequesta hardtail. With like 1" of travel from elastomer bumpstops. A real pos in hindsight, but I was the bomb at the time.
Went from 150mm Fox 32 to 160mm RS Yari on a Scott Genius 740 2016. What a differnce, Yari's feel solid and confidence inspiring. Also the extra 10mm slackened the geometery a bit
Recently i bought some new forks for my trek Roscoe 8 2019, I got some 150mm revelation's 27.5" don't go haywire at me for buying suspension 3cm bigger than the stock travel, the trek comes with a 29" Judy fork so you can run like up to a 3.2 or something, i decided to get a 27.5 fork and get much more travel, so axle to crown for the Judy's are 530mm whereas the the revelations are 542mm, so only a 1.2cm difference, but the forks usually sit at 140 because they are second hand and a bit dodgy. I personally think it has to have been the best upgrade for the bike. it's just a completely different animal, even the offset of 46mm vs 51 is a huge difference with caster steer. i am very happy for the way it has turned out. the total cost of the bike and the fork is $2000AU (grips tubeless, and the fork) the next upgrade will probably be the rear hub and brakes. then it'll be an awesome aggressive hardtail
Great video, I am needing to upgrade my Suntour XTC forks that came on my mtb. After painstakingly upgrading other parts on it, I have come to realize (the hard way) how difficult it can be without proper knowledge.
There's so much cool, shiny, expensive bike equipment these days, it's easy to spend more time obsessing over that stuff than riding the damned bike. 😍
Thanks for explaining all the options and specifications needed when trying to select a suspsension fork. Unfortunately, your website doesn't allow you to filter by wheel size, axle type, steer tube type, travel length etc. It would make the selection process much easier...

Running the stock X-Fusion Metric R 180mm tapered enduro fork up front. Love that thing. Got the sag dialed in perfect for my weight and it soaks everything up just like my yamaha dirtbike!
Good video 👍 I upgraded my 2016 stumpjumper xxl 29er 140mm non-boost 46’ offset 32mm revelation fork myself, I got a non-boost 150mm Yari 51’offset which is 35mm fork diameter, it’s a bit heavier but feels more stable & makes me feel more confident on rougher terrain, I don’t really notice the weight difference or difference in the offset from 46’ to 51’ it has made the wheelbase longer the head angle slacker due to the extra 10mm travel & different offset, a good upgrade for me being a heavy lad 240 pounds, also got some Spank Oozy 395+ wheels to go with my WT Minions, love the rock gardens more now 🏴😅

Iv upgraded from 100mm xcm coil fork to 120mm raidon air fork both sr suntour boost and it raised the bb almost half inch but decreased the head angle by a whole degree so now it feels more trail friendly🤘
How about upgrading the current fork you already have with improved dampers, extending air travel and token kits. I did all of this to my bone stock Reba RL and it made a big improvement plus saved me dough from buying a whole new fork. There must be some folks who also take this route.
schlooonginator you are totally right! Upgrading your Fork internals is a great route to go. Things like dampers, air springs etc. I should've mentioned that in this video. This was more about upgrade/replace and what to watch for.
Ive got an olllld KHS FXT trail, Grinder fork standard. Its stuuuuffed (old, been in the sun too long the stainless staunchions are not so stainless any more). Been toying with the idea of renovating it somewhat. Atleast making it rideable again anyway... Been pondering this question here.

Thank you for the kind words! It would be fun to do a video on Carbon wheels. However, I personally don't really like Carbon wheels and don't ride them myself. At this point, I just don't think the reliability is there and they are so darn expensive. To me it just doesn't make sense so I don't use them and therefore don't feel confident talking about all the different kinds. My aluminum rims are doing just dandy for now :)

Hi Jeff, I have a Rockhopper Specialized 2018 non tapered head tube. It has a SR Suntour XCM fork 100mm and I would like to do an upgrade in my fork. I have a Fox 32 step-cast tapered tube, but in the workshop where I take my bike they told me “NOT to install that fork” they want me to buy another bike, which is more expensive . . . It has a tapered frame (tapered fork - in the future I will make an upgrade to a full suspension but by the moment I will keep my bike). Because I don´t have much budget at the moment. So, do you recommend a Straight to tapered steer tube adapter? I appreciate any recommendation, thank you for your time guys !!
I was thinking of putting a better fork on my xc but I reckon just to but a fs bike or bye a more expensive hardtail I'm saving for a fs bike but I would say get better folks but then yet again the bike shop said not to but maby their just thristy for money but at the end of the day its your choice good luck.
I still run the stock fork on my Trek Marlin 5 I’ve got about 100 plus miles on it and I love it when I get the money I might upgrade to a fox fork oh and I have 75mm’s of travel.

I ordered a new bike; shop that's assembling it for me will have it ready tomorrow (hopefully); since then I've discovered the fork is kinda crap. I'm not too concerned because I don't plan on doing any trails ---at least yet, but I figure I'll probably be upgrading it at some point. Helpful vid as the bike I got has a tapered head and I thought that was going to be an issue :)
I wish your website could be sorted to view forks that will fit a certain application. Wheel size, travel and axle width are common on other websites...
Currently looking to upgrade my fork from the stock SR Suntour that it came with, to a decent air fork. Im thinking something like the Manitou Markhor or Machete, or RockShox 30 Gold or Reba. The most confusing thing for me to figure out was steerer tube type and axle width.
