This video is about stick welding an uphill outside corner joint in 1/4" (6mm) thick hot rolled steel.
I initially intended to just show a single pass weld as compared to a 2 pass weld but I ran into a few wrinkles so I thought I would show all the good, bad, and yes ugly.

Hey Jody! Tig finger werks great! I wanted to wait for a while before I said something. I used it as a production welder for Frasier in Canada (Fracan) I don't recommend them. I didnt go to college for that! Anyway when you gotta pump out hundreds of pieces and they give you the odd piece that your stuck in a hot spot... It werks. All day!!

I've no doubt you could have kept going and perfected the technique and then shown only the perfected video, you chose to show us the warts and all progression, from which we learned a great deal more. Hats off to you sir, keep it up.

I love your cut and etch tests. It definitely allows for more insight to exactly how different techniques perform. Once again excellent videos! Clear, concise, and to the point.

Love that saw. It's amazing how nice a cut that leaves and how quickly it cuts through 1/4". Another great video. I think as long as I keep practicing and watching I will be competent on welding. Already learned a ton about stick and Mig. Once I get those two fairly squared away I'm going to start on Tig.

The cut & etch is definitely good stuff to expierement I stick weld every day & almost 100% of my welding out in the field is stick other than aluminum Tig jobs. Fit up is huge agreed, especially I get jobs where large plates are cut out before my arrival for heavy equipment & I always have a lot of fitup to do. Great job Jody I always enjoy to see what you have in store for us next. Love your Tig finger bro. Definitely has saved my 🥓 on my high amp aluminum jobs!

Jody I've been welding on heavy equitment for about 3 years and have watched your videos firm the start I'm a huge fan of your work anyway could you do a field repair video explaining some basic tools and tricks for out in the field and maybe so be basic 6011 and 7018 joints and passes. Most of my work is far away from the shop in the middle of a Hayfield or soybean field thanks -Nate

Jody, I wonder if a 6011 root pass would of provided the penetration all the way through or if it was just fitment gap? Would be an interesting follow-up test. Great test video!!

Love your videos! Amazing how metals move when heat is applied. You gotta add more tacks. Just be sure to thin them with cutting disc before the weld is burnt in. Any chance a peek at your etch recipe? Would love to check my beads too.

If my weld puddle is falling out what are the possible causes? Is it just too high an amp setting? I think I'm using just a bit of up tilt angle like you are. I last tried this with 1/8" 7018 rod. Thanks so much for these videos.

Hey there, My welding teacher told us to put 3 tacks on our work. You don't have a 'middle' tack - could that be the cause of your "fold" ? Just asking because I want to learn. Thank You for all the effort you put into your videos.

He has talked in the past about using a Stainless Steel passivization solution and Naval Jelly for etching. Based on how it looked I would guess the former for today's stuff. Just a guess though.

Would welding downhill make a difference?
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 6 лет назад
it would. downhill with 7018 is not recommended.
@EnsignRho
@EnsignRho 6 лет назад
Downhill 7018 causes lots of inclusions. The heavy flux gets in the way and pushes the metal into odd places. However, 7018 downhill with a really high heat is good for digging out some bad weld and metal if you can get in there with a grinder and get back down to all clean metal to build back up. It's sometimes faster than something like using a grinder or setting up an arc gouger. We typically use 1/8" to 5/32" 7018 on very high heat (1/8" around 150 amps, 5/32" up to even 200 amps). Carry a wide arc and pulse in and out a little bit and as you see drips forming, lead them along by making some quick down motions to encourage them to fall to the ground, then go back to where you were. A little practice, you'll get it. :-)
@stevo450ify
@stevo450ify 6 лет назад
Im also curious to know why... Knowing that weld causes shrinkage.... You didn't gap the material ( kinda like a root pass scenario )....
