Located on Woods Point Rd, between Warburton and McMahon's Creek this 11km circuit hike gives glimpses to Australia's 19th century gold-mining past.
Stand-out mentions to Big Peninsula Tunnel, doubling up with a great swimming hole on the exit side of tunnel. The tunnel was blown open by sticks of gelignite, from the smoking cigars of pick-welding gold diggers. A narrow point where the Yarra river "dog legs" back on itself was chosen so as to lower the water level in the now dry hairpin loop and provide practical conditions to sluice the soil for gold nuggets. Well nuggets is extravagant, probably more like pebbles or even grains.
The walk has moderate inclines toward Big Peninsula tunnel and then again on approach to the ranges surrounding this, where water races designed for gold-mining purposes can be found winding through ferny glades. Lyrebirds are a distinct feature of the walk and if you don't see one then you'll definitely sense their presence through scratchings and a rolodex of sing-song.
A pretty walk whose only complaint would be a few long stretches along water and fire trail escarpments where the only thought is, "when do I turn off this bloody thing?"
