Flight #: UPS(5X)2560
Route: SDF to MSP
Runway used for landing: 12R
Aircraft type: Boeing 747-8F
Registration #: N606UP
Location: Cargo Road(Aircraft Viewing Area)
Camera: Panasonic HC-VX870
Tripod: Me on a stepladder
DETAILS: The go around was caused by a gust of wind around the touchdown point. The gust resulted in excessive floating. By the time she eventually hit concrete, not enough runway was available to safely stop the aircraft so the go around was executed.

So let's do some simple math here: Gear down and locked at 0:22, over the threashold at 1:15. To begin with, the flight was stabilized not earlier than 650 feet AGL. Then, by the look of the nose position, they had quite of extra smash comming over the threashold, at least Vref + 15 if not +20 knots. All and all, ground effect has a way of returning that extra enegery at the worst moment...

If they chose to continue the landing, the plane might overshoot the runway.
@twincitiesaviator
@twincitiesaviator 4 года назад
Precisely. Even if it was light(which we think it was) with half the runway gone at touchdown they wouldn’t have been able to stop safely.

And if there's poor weather or wind conditions, the next plane should know and be prepared, reducing their need for a go-around, making less work for everybody.

What a beautiful airplane! Majestic! Wonderful job catching the go around. I used to work about 1000' west of the start of runway 17. In all my time there I was never privileged enough to catch sight of a 747. MD-11's, sure. Airbus A-340 (Air France), everyday. But a 747 has always eluded me. Almost got to see Air Force One but Secret Service made everyone stay inside. Thanks for the video. It was nice to see that plane on my home turf.

I used to read AAF (Army Air Force- precursor to the USAF) training manuals for kicks. Back then if you started the round out and flare and aborted the landing it was called a "balked landing". You can go around if you touchdown, even if the speed brakes/spoilers deploy, but once you deploy the thrust reversers you're committed to land. If the pilot didn't like it, it was the right call.
