Your videos are so calming and make sailing super interesting. Not only have you helped me go through rough days where I felt like crap, but you have also made me sign up for a sailing course / license! Thank you so much for your inspiration and your videos, who sprout good energy wherever they end up! Bonne journée!
Just awesome what you are doing . I let someone turn me from this path when I was in my 20s but no more. I am 57 and this summer I start in the Pacific south west of Canada.
Glad you enjoyed Tradewinds as I am a member and really enjoy the crews and meeting the other members on the boats. Each crew member has a great story on "how they got to the sailing world" Be safe
Bonne "tronche" ton pote!....
The best sub of 2018; super chilled out channel in English, but in French it is amazingly cool!!! Currently the boss of solo sailing channels and possibly all sailing channels!!
Whats stopping you? His boat was less than $3000 I believe. He learnt to fix it up and get it ready himself. He probably spends less than $1500 month average since he left France. Start your saving, make a realistic goal/ plan. Stick to it and make your dream come true.
i fell in love with you channel because for 2 weeks every summer i go to summer camp and i sail a small sunfish there, and watching your channel has thought me a lot, and i am thankful. I have a new dream in mind, to sail the seas. Thank you!
swirl - I understand fears like this. I just don’t have one of water but I do for many other things. Sailing like this (if smart about it) is actually safer than that of a 40 hour work week with a commute. By quite a bit actually. One of my biggest fears is dying in a fiery car wreck so this would put me at ease! I am very interested as well.
Bonjour Hugo, this vid is really nice and for some reason very inspiring ) You are like maritime Saviour - finding good people and bringing them to your boat and to your channel, he-he ))) Greets to Henry and good luck with regata!!
I am now caught up! Great videos man. I sailed for a few years in high school on a little 4.20, some optis and lasers and this is making me want to pull my 1956 French "Zeff" 4.20m boat out :)
Thanks a lot. In case you need subtitles, you can turn them on by clicking on the CC button at the bottom right corner of the youtube player, and click on the small wheel to choose which language you want the subtitles. Hi Hugo I just discovered you last week but have binge watched your story with utmost envy and absolute respect. Congratulations on a safe crossing I bet you haven't been so close to your dad since you was a kid I'm sure that can be a challenge. Hope you stayed best . You seem to have quickly made great contacts and crewing in the regatta was a great way into the scene. How are you finding the costs in the Caribbean, I believe things can get pricey but I think your boat size an minimalist style must really help. My brother is about to relaunch down in Panama next week but still work to do before he leaves. Am now thinking asymmetric kite is the way to go but will need to devise a small bowsprit as you have. Be safe and watch out for the reefs.
it is awesome to see that your channel is growing and getting bigger. I love you and your videos so much. keep up living your dream! any chance you will visit one of the beautiful Dutch islands in the caribbean?
Thanks for the inspiration, you prove that to follow your dreams is the most fulfilling life. And I want your opinion on cat or mono which do you prefer
Hello there mister sailing frenchman, first of all thank you for the awsome video's you made. i have a question. What did you do with the garabage you collected when you were on the sea for weeks? "Ofcourse" human waste could be dumped into the sea but what did you do with the rest? Like the cans, plastic, paper etc. etc. I am just wondering. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Good question. On small passages I keep most of the garbage and throw it when I arrive on land. For longer passages, I throw overboard all what is organic, buy also steel cans (that will rust pretty quickly) as well as papers/carton that is not printed (paper is just wood fibers) and also glass bottles (glass is melted sand, it will become sand again). So this reduces the amount of garbage I have to store
Merci pour ta chaine. Elle respire de liberté. J'ai 1 petite question: Comment tu trouves tes jobs dans presque tous les ports ? Merci, et bon vent ...
As Special Guest said, I am working here and there as skipper on charter boats, sometimes on the docks as technician. And before this I had a more regular job and have been saving for a few years before being able to start this journey
Waking up every 15min, have a look at this episode where I give more tips about single handed passages ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z-X6qWJcPYQ.html
Thank you for another great video. Marine growth seems to be much much more intense in the warmer weather.... And I thought marine growth was bad in Norway...... I obviously need to find something else to complain about! How often do you need to scrape the bottom and how often do you apply New antifouling?
Yeah, the warmer the water, the fastest is the growth. I give a quick scrub every 2 weeks, and antifooling every 2 years is a maximum. I tried recently a new technique, with 2 layers of hard matrix antifooling and 1 layer of self peeling antifooling, really good results so far after 9months
@TheSailingFrenchman hey man i found your channel few days ago , i didn't even know sailing is huge thing on youtube. I really like it. Watched almost all of your vids saving few for next few days so i have something to look forward to. I want to ask you if you had any previous schooling in maritime life , did you graduate at some academy of sort or what was it? I'm asking this because i have no experience in sailing or sea life but these vids really got me and i'm thinking of learning some basic stuff on my own (although i'm coming from country which doesn't have sea exit) and maybe one day to come to the point when i can make plans on setting the sails. How does it work, what kind of education would you recommend and do you know any good books (preferably in English) which i can get to keep dream live and educate myself in basic things like navigation , winds , seas , rules of engagement and communication in open sea , entering harbor etc...something you do every day but i keep asking myself what would i do in that situation and i have no answer . Thank you and keep posting.
I have an economic background, so if you want to sail, go for it, no need of school for that. You can have a look to the Colregs (rules of the road for boats) but they are quite boring, maybe try to put your hands on some RYA or ASA books, for the theory. Then there is al the books from sailors, Moitessier, Sir Robert Knox Johnson, Le Toumelin, Les Damiens...etc. Then the next move is going to some sea side town with a big harbor and find a technical job on the docks, you will find most of what you need to know there
@@TheSailingFrenchman First of all thank you for answer , secondly i don't mind if it is "boring" but necessity for sailing experience , my thoughts are that 90% of time it is just regular life duties you need to do so everything can work as intended and once you master that you get fun time to really enjoy sea and freedom.I understand that you and many other youtubers etc, pick most interesting parts of your daily routine , it's normal. Gonna look for those books and other and who knows if i'm persistent enough maybe i'll sail one day too. Good luck and have fun in your adventure.
hey first off all i enjoy your video's so muc that i have been looking into to buy a boat and start sailing myself. but now i have a question do you need a license to cross the ocean and if so what is the name of it?
It depends on the countries, but normally you don't need a license to sail a sailing boat, no matter where you go, as long a you sail for yourself (meaning not commercially, being paid to take ppl on charter for example)
Keep going !
Yeah, I thought about it a lot, the thing is that a wind wane takes all the space at the back, and in small boat like mine, the rear platform is a huge plus, adds another room to the boat. So it was a hard choice in between the platform and the windvane, but the platform won
Yeah i know what you mean, its always a trade off on small boats ( i have a 22 ft Westerly Cirrus). Ive just heard that the windvanes are great for consuming power and relatively reliable. I hope to do a transatlantnic one day later and being solo but for now will purchase an electric for cruising the baltic sea. Plan on having a backup system like you did. Thank you for your cool and inspring videos, look forward to more. Fair winds mate!
Thanks for posting your videos. I really enjoy them. I have a question: When you travel solo overnight, do you sleep in short bursts? or not at all? Or get a full night's sleep. I've read different approaches using radar and AIS alarms, but I think your boat isn't equiped with this.
I sometimes do passages of more than a week, so have to sleep at some points. I sleep in periods of 15 minutes. I don't have any AIS or radar, but those can help. Have a look at episode #16 fore more details : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z-X6qWJcPYQ.html
How dose you non Electric self-steering system work? I‘m a Student from Germany so i don‘t have the money to buy an electrical one, but still planed a nice Tour this year. It‘s good to see your videos when your boat isn‘t in the water.
You just need an ajustable system on the windward side, and a bungee on the other side. But this will only work on a fine reach to closed hauled. You should google "self steering windvane" with a bit of time and some tools, it's possible to build your own windvane and it's just as good if not better as an electric autopilot
Wow I would not have eaten before you left if your friend has never been sailing before, poor thing. I think he might get addicted to sailing and come stay forever. : ) peace
Salut a toi mon sailing man.
We watched your channel every Friday. we are from two different countries Colombia and Sweden and we did not understand French It would be nice if you translate the french part in English so we feel part and understand what your friend is talking about.
Hey Injoylife, there should be subtitles for that, have you tried to turn on the subtitles? You can click on the CC button at the bottom right corner of the youtube player, and click on the small wheel to choose which language you want the subtitles. This link also explains the process pretty well : www.wikihow.com/Turn-On-RU-vid-Subtitles
Question supplémentaire...
@@mirror452 in previous episodes he provided subtitles in english it appeared without need to enable captions as these were part of the video. Wonder what changed now anyway it's his choice.
Vebjørn Sandvik I am editing subtitles in close caption in English and French (also getting some help in Russian and Spanish on some episodes), just turn them on when its speaking in a language you are not comfortable with
Hey mate, might be some french an spanish speaking in the next few episodes, if you need to turn on the subtitles, you can click on the CC button at the bottom right corner of the youtube player, and click on the small wheel to choose which language you want the subtitles. This link also explains the process pretty well : www.wikihow.com/Turn-On-RU-vid-Subtitles
Hugo, next time when the autopilot stops working there is the best old school method for thousands zero energy consumption n.miles .THE STORM JIB SYSTEM.
You mean the system where you rig a storm jib on the baby forestay and tie lines from the clew to the tiller? I've tried that and I'm not too convinced, probably works better on a long keel...
MY French is not good but it sounded like your friend Henri said he tried to work on the computer router but couln't fix it so he drank a bottle of champagne......
Something like that. But if you want you can also turn on subtitles by clicking on the CC button at the bottom right corner of the youtube player. You can choose the language of the subtitles clicking on the snall wheel looking like button which is next to the CC button. Enjoy :)
My boat is called Ann Alé, it means "let's go" in creole. It's an Ecume de Mer, 26ft quarter tonner from the Mallard shipyard, a french built form the 70's, have a look at episode #24 for more details about the boat: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nk8K1GF2fB0.html
Absolutely, sail on others people's boats. Look on Google for "crew finder". Lots of ppl are looking for extra hands to go sailing on weekends. It's a great way to learn sailing at a minimal cost
