I will never forget my years studying with Phil Wilson at Berklee in the early eighties - what a great guy and player. I will always carry those memories fondly. As for Urbie, he came to our high school in 1978 for our Jazz Tracs series and we did a duet on a tune called Blue Monk. I can remember being in awe. What an incredibly melodic and fluid player.

Attended a Phil Wilson ITA workshop in the late 1970's and as someone dragged a chair into the over flowing room, Phil matched the screeching sound perfectly with his trombone. Besides impressing, it was a great workshop.

Love the interviews with Phil! I studied with him in the late 80's/early 90's. He is the reason I moved to Boston.

Urbie is a GREAT soloist. I think Urbie, to me, is the second most transcribed (by me) soloist after Rosolino. Phil and Paul have it right - the guy was a giant. His choice of notes, and his sound are his great asset. Urbie also projects a great self assurance in his sound, that few trombone players manage to project. If you overlook Urbie Green in your studies of trombone jazz, I think you are making a big mistake. Listen to his solo in "Rain (Chuva)" on Walter Wanderly's "Rainforest" recording. It's brilliant, demonstrates fabulous note choice concept, and even uses some of Phil Wilson's own incredible "buzz slur" type effects (very briefly, and subtly, as Urbie always does). Rain could be perplexing to many soloists because it's medium tempo, very mellow, and yet Bossa. It demands some double time, yet really lends itself to sheer beauty of sound quality. Urbie does not disappoint on this one. Now, I will not stop until I find that "Blue Flame" jazz solo that Phil is talking about. That tune was Woody's theme for many years, and is a great bluesy vehicle for the band and the trombone. Often it features plunger work for bone.

I'd love to get Phill's thoughts and a story or two about my father's (Billy Byers) playing. Loving these Phill Wilson sequences. He's a hero!

Your dad was one of the true giants of jazz trombone playing. I listened to one of his solos and was knocked out by his conception and exectution and everthing about his playing. My reaction was "No wonder this guy was an in demand jazz trombone player in New York. He was incredible".

I understand Billy Byers was one of the most prolific yet unknown arrangers in LA history. People like Quincy would let BB do the job and pay him for it, and then put their own names on it. This beside all the arrangements that actually has his name on it.

There was an album that came out decades ago made by a band of former Herman players. Pretty sure it was Erbie on the awesome bone solo on Blue Flame.

Lots of old recordings of Woody and Blue Flame on YT, but I think this is the one he is referring to: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PEuSDtz7Jag.html
