"I love the expression on those children's faces! Even at their age they understand that what he's playing is extraordinary and unbelievable!"

Currently listening to the persuasive trombone of Urbie Green on vinyl, what a master of the trombone he was. It just takes you to another world :’)

Notes in triple-tongue flight are being oozed out of Urbie Green's t'bone with unparalleled finesse .

"he is just dubbing" Sadly, I come to the same conclusion. The audio is simply the cut from the album "21 Trombones, volume 2", which I have heard countless times (and you can see clearly playing on the phonograph in the shot). Yes, technically, he is doing the slide movements "live" along with the album, and he's the one who played on the album, but the fact that he is simply miming the actions to the album is probably why he looks so nonchalant. I wish there were a live video recording of him actually playing it for real, but any live video of Urbie from this long ago is, I'm sure quite rare. Even though this video clip isn't what I'd hoped for, there's no disputing that Urbie is one of the true legends of the trombone!

Urbie appeared live on at least one "Art Ford Jazz Party" in 1958. I'm certain there are other films, probably with Benny Goodman.

It appears to me that he’s actually playing along with his recording. He’s so on that it only sounds like one bone.

This song is actually called "The Green Bee" and can be found on Urbie's album "21 Trombones". Per some documentation in the album, this was written in the hope it would be the theme song for the TV series "The Green Hornet". Sadly enough, it wasn't selected.

he may be lip syncing here but i saw him do in live back in the late 60's when he was fronting a Tommy Dorsey ghost band. It was the real thing.

Urbie played with Woody Herman in the 1950's then he was out during one performance, and a little known trombonist at the time, Carl Fontana, replaced him... Herman was so impressed with Carl that he kept him on (secretly hoping that Urbie might retire...) stuff of folklore...

Urbie and Carl played together in Woody's band, circa 1952. There was a photo of the band in the Avalon Ballroom. Urbie was slight and slender and played a big bell horn, and Carl was tall and beefy and played a small bell!

If you look at the original video he explains this - he is playing along with his own recording as a demonstration in this masterclass - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nhnb9mM_Z-4.html
