Awesome. I just started working in a SNF and found most of the residents can also be on hiprex and vitamin C for recurrent UTI.

Nice input! Some little input, majority of the Nitrite Positive (qualitatively) are UTI due to bacteria; bacteria that are capable of fermenting/converting Nitrate to Nitrites like E.coli etc Am glad
@mohammadalbahri4633
@mohammadalbahri4633 2 года назад
You are so right. I was about to comment on the same thing. The presence of nitrite makes u suspect E.coli or other enterococus bacteria.

Love your videos. I am to start in May in a SNF...could u make a video or either answer below what type of acute issues you see most often...and what do u usually get on calls for ? I am having a bit if anxiety about the acute aspect of the job as I don't feel we were trained for this....thanks!
@fromcnatonp
@fromcnatonp 3 года назад
Congratulations on your new role, a bit of anxiety is ok. You get calls for every and anything, pt fall in middle of the night, pt confused, pt not eating, weight loss all of it. Most acute stuff is change in mental status and this can be the result of many different things that you have to do work up for. UTI, PNA, dehydration. Best of luck to you

Good explanation. I wanted to ask if the UTI always show positive for both leukocyte and nitrite. Do you need one of them positive to say that it might be UTI?
@fromcnatonp
@fromcnatonp Год назад
Positive nitrates is definitely UTI, with elevated levels of leukocytes I still treat the pt and send the urine for culture. You would also culture if the nitrate is positive to make sure the antibiotics that was given will treat the bacteria

what if the protein was trace is it a bad sign or normal
@jessalaisaac.a2599
@jessalaisaac.a2599 Год назад
Not all bacteria change nitrate to nitrite in urine, it's some of enterobactreciae(GNR) which change that in urine and make detection of nitrite in urine biochemical(dipstick) Analytes which indicates uti are Protein + (where caused by presence of epithelial cells in urine) Nitrite (which converted as i said first) Leu where typically it is leucocytes esterase it is an enzyme produced by cellular membrane of granulocytes (wbc's -netrophils, eosinophils and basophils) where in urine indicates infection Urinalysis it is a wide study which interpretation of results need interconection of each results

Leukocytes seem to be measured as “ca cells/ul” (as noted on the dip stick keys). What does the “ca” stand for? Cancer??? Can these decrease without having cancer?
