Ursa Mini Pro G2 owner FRUSTRATED after sending in for repair (or replacement) for a third time...

The Ursa Mini Pro G2 is undoubtedly an outstanding value proposition. 120fps, 4.6k, fast read speed, great color, great dynamic range, intuitive UI, decent onboard audio and industry leading codecs. But after leaving the RED ecosystem for Blackmagic Design, although our BMPCC 6k has been faultless - we’ve just sent our (previously replaced) Ursa Mini Pro G2 back for a third time.
The first time it bricked on us on a commercial shoot, that was repaired. It came back faulty (and the fault got worse) with the screen going either pink or blank and the front SDI port sometimes working or not.
Following that issue and sending the camera in a second time it was actually replaced with a new one. Yay! Then I had this experience (front SDI port died) and we’ve sent our Ursa in for a third time.
What would you do if you were in our position? Would you move to another system? Would you stay the course? I love BRAW and I’m behind Blackmagic Designs mission but I’m frustrated and impatient and although I love the Ursa G2, I don’t trust it anymore...

My ursa got replaced 3 times. It worked flawlessly since then. I love the camera but it is true that my experience with all products from BM has been difficult. Hopefully the company will learn form their mistakes and eventually get their products right. They are a young camera company after all

I agree, reliability is the most important feature of a camera. Repairability is second. Blackmagic really has to get their shit together! I sent my URSA to the UK because of a flickering LCD and after 5 weeks I got it back with the LCD fully dead. They are a service/build quality nightmare and they really have to be careful not to scare off all the professional users.

100% we’re on canon and Alexa now. Sold our Ursa but kept our bmpcc 6k pro… which interestingly has been flawless for us. The 12k may have been more tempting had we not experienced the reliability issues we had

That’s terrible, sorry to hear that, we just picked up a g2 now a bit concerned. We really needed a work horse outside of the Bmpcc6k. We rent a ton but having one camera on deck is a huge value. Quality control seems to be an issue. Hope this isn’t the case.

Oh mate! I can 100% sympathise with you. I bought a G2 6 weeks ago and out of the box the EVF was faulty (then replaced), then had audio problems creep in about two weeks in, then had a mic fried by turning on phantom power... the body was replaced and instantly I had the same audio problems and fried another mic... oh and timecode sync wouldn’t work on either body, despite troubleshooting with blackmagic. I 100% agree with you with regards to loving the camera, loving the workflow and loving what blackmagic are trying to do, but I just couldn’t trust it and went about getting a refund to go another way. I’ve not decided yet, but think I’m heading in the C300mkiii direction. If I were you I’d be looking for something else, you’ve gotta be able to trust your gear.

@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions 3 года назад
@@DriftwoodProject Oh spewing... yeah one of our audio dials has just fallen off. That's a tough set of cards you've been dealt! I'm fingers crossed hoping things stabilise now and the now repaired camera works well for us for at least the next 2 years. It's under warranty until I think September next year. Too late to return I would think, and when its firing - it's sensational. 4.6k 120fps + braw make it a great camera for sometime. But it has me thinking twice about buying another BMD camera (although our 6k pocket hasn't skipped a beat!)... Providing our G2 remains in working order we wont look for anything else just yet. I like to get 3 years out of an A camera purchase and feel, if I can - every second gen is really worth the leap (generally speaking). There's always something new around the corner. But right now if I were to move on it'd likely be the c300mkiii... Will see where I'm at late 2021. For now more likely purchases are some upgrades in the sound department and 3080 cards for the two editing/grading PC's. (I'm on a 1080ti)

Go with C300mk III - it’s a beautiful and reliable camera! It’s better in color fidelity and in DR compared to URSA G2, much more reliable and robust, lighter, also built in ND’s. And I’m speaking it being a Red Scarlet MX owner. I’ve shot both G2 and C300 and, while, G2 was never more appealing to me over Epic/Scarlet MX - the C300 is. Autofocus is brilliant for smaller gigs, the log profile can be easily transformed into Alexa Log space and give a really good starting point for a good color grade. It’s just so much better than G2 in color, even better than Epic MX. It’s quite in the Gemini range in terms of DR and color rendition

If you can contact BMD and let them know, I think that would be the best way. It sucks that since I relocated to Taipei the customer service here is quite terrible. I've emailed the BMD customer service via their website, but I only got a response after my 5th or 6th email. My G2 knob broke the week I got the camera. It took me forever to finally got someone from Singapore to helped me. In the end I had to pay for US$45 to have the knob shipped to me. They wouldn't take credit card payment or pay pal. I had to do bank transfer that cost me extra $25 plus the DHL shipping they charged me. Thankfully the knobs were free. I don't get it. I'm a big fan of their products, but I'm also thinking of jumping to the SONY ship now that they have FX9 and FX6. It's a bit frustrating. I've only had the camera since February, I just found out my G2 can't get any info from the lens. I normally use cine lens, so I never needed the lens control until recently when I need to use cheaper canon lenses. I don't know what I should do now. I'm hoping it's just the firmware malfunctioning.
@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions 3 года назад
I'm not sure about the lenses as I mostly use Zeiss ZF (duclos modded) and sigma zooms. They do communicate for push button autofocus/iris... I also find the fx9 and fx6 very enticing. Now braw though... hoping to have some time with an FX9 (+c300mkiii) soon

I thought about these same thing before getting the BMPCC 6K and ordering the 12K. For me, in the end, it came down to the ecosystem. I think that BRAW offers an advantage and that makes the potential issues worth it. I also feel that it's on me to make sure I have backup's of all essential equipment and I view that as a cost of doing business. And honestly when I started building out my new production company I looked at both Arri and Red cameras but honestly could not justify the ROI. I'll have 2 6K's and only 1 12K to start with, but plan on getting a second 12K in about 6 months to cover myself. So, it's not a perfect world and I do feel that the quality on BlackMagic cameras could be better, and I worry about things like this all the time. But the end result for the price makes it worth it. Sorry
@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions 3 года назад
I totally understand and get you. Braw is AMAZING! And we could almost have two g2's for the price of a c300mkiii. Certainly something to think about. Part of my worry is also what happens when warranty is up... what would the costs of repair be and how likely would I be to have issues a fourth time...
@Whaever_1981
@Whaever_1981 3 года назад
Since you feel so tied to the Blackmagic post-production pipeline I'd say hold on to the G2, get yourself an A7SIII and wait for the G2 successor. The A7SIII is not too expensive, will pack small and it'll always come out handy to have such a tiny full featured camera on you, even after the "G3" comes out. I'd also experiment with seeing how the Sony A7SIII in PRORES RAW works for you and matches with the G2. The 12 Bit Log RAW of the Sony should have noticeably improved DR data information than its in-built 4-2-2 codecs (and maybe be better than the Pocket 6K DR too? No one has done extensive testing of this alas). Really hoping the URSA Mini G3 will have an RF mount!!

Thanks for the advice. Will have the Ursa coming back from repair and will keep for now (I think) but will try both cams (fx9 and c300mkiii) in the coming couple months. Then see what we want to do after testing them. It'll be a matter of staying with Ursa till end of warranty (as Acam)... selling and purchasing one of those or an as yet unannounced camera... or keeping ursa plus getting something new... we'll see. @@AlucinorProductions I've met Red owner in person and lot of them on YT reporting having to send their camera multiple time. My personal experience is mostly a waste of time with issue with boot time, calibrating taking hours when moving from hot / cold location, noisy fan, and just last weekend, weird video issue where part of the video is out of sync (This could be only on SDI output, they just rebooted the camera and it seem to be fined after that). It also super annoying, for example, when you switch to monitor false color, it change the video output, so your monitors will lose connections and try to resync(A bit like BM when switching from Recording to Playback). Location of the Timecode and SDI port suck (require more addons to make it a bit better). Require expensive Media, expensive monitor... But I just hate Red as well because of their previous CEO, and unless they apologized with screwing their customers on their gear and specially media card (which are super cheap card internally and they do fail (Lot of video about this online)). For me, for the price, I must say the Sony FX9 is the camera that would interest me outside of BM and Alexa. For BM, I must say, I'm disappointed with the performance of the 12k from the video I saw... It look to be noisy, beta OS issues to handle that new sensor (different bitrate and sensor resolution), moiré issues (Mostly when scaled down, so I'm not sure if it a software issue instead...). I would personally would like more a 6k full frame with good sensitivity and DR rather than the 12k Super35 ! Improve the body a little bit more and I would pay the 10k$ of the 12k for that !

@@mochouinard thanks for taking the time to fully respond! Appreciate it. Man I hear you. I would love a 6k FF Ursa. I havent checked out a lot of 12k footage yet since the first batch came out.
