Thanks! I'll never forget during "solid shield '87" we had a Hawk missile battery borrow our back lot at MLB Station Ocracoke inlet. One day I was on watch and one of the "referees" (a USMC Colonel) was standing there looking at our pictures on our wall in the front entry shaking his head. I asked him if there was a problem, he pointed at the photos and said "are these pictures of the inlet here?" I replied Yes Sir, and pointed out the boat number and pointed at our boat, then directed his attention to the newest picture (which was one I had taken around a year beforehand) and he said "I thought Marines were crazy, but you guys a F--king crazy!"

This is training, out on the Outer banks you train in mild to moderate seas, it's too dangerous to train in severe weather out here! When the Coast Guard was looking for places to put the National Motor Life Boat School, the finalists were Columbia River bar, and the Outer Banks of NC (3 inlets that could serve as training sites depending on which direction the swell was coming from) - they picked Ilwaco based on two factors 1) frequency of large surf and 2) safety of said surf (large waves far enough apart for instructors to correct errors made by trainees) - The Outer Banks of NC was found to have large enough surf for training as frequently as Cape Disappointment, but not in conditions that were suitable for training. In other words, when Cape Hatteras gets surf, it's frequently too dangerous for training. With Ilwaco you'd get 12-14 ft surf with a 25 second interval between waves, at Cape Hatteras you get 12-14 foot seas with a 12 - 13 second wave period.

I think it's Oregon Inlet on the North Carolina Outer Banks. This video was shot back when they were replacing the Bonner Bridge on Highway 12.

Incorrect. The USCG (as well as the RNLI, and many other nations Life saving services) Motor Life Boats are designed to handle hurricane conditions at sea safely. I personally have been alongside a USN frigate in close to hurricane conditions and our 44' MLB handled it better than the 370+ foot long frigate did. When they'd plow through a wave we'd go happily bobbing over the top. Mother nature's rollercoaster 😂

Bet you were in deeper water and didn’t have to worry about grounding, this inlet is shallow and shifting continuously. They go out in seas much greater than this to rescue people because of their stupidity and get in trouble risking their lives to save them!🎉

Women may have a slight advantage in the Cape May coast guard training pool. But at something like a 20' plus drop (maybe 30'?) and having a Mae west rig strapped to your crotch - it really does not matter if you have male appendages or not - when you hit the water doing an abandoned ship drill - the Mae west rig stays way more buoyant than your body. Try it someday! (Do not think it makes much difference having CG pool attendants ready to assist - they are mostly there to make sure recruits complete the long distance rescue swim - hint - the boat hook each one has is not really to help you out of the pool - quite the opposite.)
