Days after Google announced laying off 12,000 employees in January this year, some employees off the company went on a rally to protest in New York. The protesters said that they felt betrayed and now don't know what the future holds.

Not all of them are braggers. My daughter doesn’t like it when I mention she works there because it could hurt the feelings of her friends who couldn’t get hired there. She doesn’t tell people where she grew up or went to school or the fact that she had 4 degrees including her masters and Google job by age 23. I’m her father however so I don’t have to listen to her. She has told me I’m “a little too proud of her” and I plead guilty.

They're just sad that they won't get anymore of those free big paychecks. I've worked for one of them big companies during pandemic - not contributing anything to the company and having almost an entire day as a break. I got depressed and quit the job for good. That job made me lose my self worth, I doubt myself now and don't attend any interviews. I clinged on to that job as long as I could, for the money but my health and my confidence took a hit big time. I'm glad that i didn't stick around for the lay offs.

Be about profit is one thing - be dishonest about plans is a entirely different animal. Such things should not come as "surprise" - it is a result of parasitic business practices to keep employees in the dark about possibilities as long as possible.

I look at it like this google owner is doing what he can to take care of what he has created. Anyone in his shoes would do the very same thing to save its profit. You don't understand these layoffs are not solely to cut costs and the economic situation. All the tech companies are preparing for the future because of the developments in AI they will be needing much less employees in near future. They are just getting ready. There will be much to come.

AI still doesn't know when, where and how to apply any logic. And it's almost impossible. Like AI can't test complete s/w and h/w. Now it will develop a program with real world scenarios.

In 2023 these tech kids are just experiencing what our parents or grandparents generation dealt with in the 70's & 80's, the mass layoffs in the manufacturing industry. They survived it by going to a trade school & learning a new skill like electrician, plumbing, car mechanic, construction, landscaping...don't be picky or lazy you should do the same.

While I partly agree with your comment, I think the difference is that now we don't have so many options. Most of the manufacturing and trades jobs are automated. Where does one go after tech? Also, everyone can't be a tradesman or woman as it usually takes time to learn the craft and the courses are not free. People have bills to pay and don't always have the time and other support systems. I honestly think that a large sector of society (besides the super rich) is into some shady schemes and that's how they're surviving, which makes it easy for them to tell others what to do. Like, of course, if you're a thief, life will be easier for you.

@@ra.8519 I have a friend who does not have any trade certification, but he worked full-time at two different jobs from Monday to Friday - 14hrs a day. Those jobs are in retail and hospitality and he makes $90,000 a year. He then studies on the weekend so that he can find a better job in the future. He might not have a life, but he sure knows how to grind on.

When I lost my job in 2008, I started my own business. Btw, I worked in a hospital! When employees complain about being laid off, start your own business and watch how fast you are counting every penny! Never make the assumption about a company's worth...you may be surprised!

@@SuperPhunThyme100 It hard. I did it many years ago after getting laid off. I was single at the time and my brother let me move into his basement rent free. I went to work for free for a builder and sat in his models and sold house on a commission only basis. After 3 years started my own construction company and I’m a multimillionaire today. That said it was tough during economic downturns which is why I advised my daughter not to quit her high paying Google job.

Just because it has lot of money 🤑💰- will they pay same salary to other centers outside US! for same headcounts?! I don't think so.
