Welcome to our new mini-series on US healthcare. Over the course of the next few videos we try to explain the US healthcare system and how it differs to the UK's NHS system.
This first video will cover some of the terms you need to be aware of and the initial differences between how we fund the NHS vs how medical insurance works in the US

What do all of these terms mean. The A & S Way tries to explain how the US medical healthcare system works.
The UK has the NHS, National Health Service. Often seen as free but it is not, it is free at the point of use. The NHS is funded via income taxes.
The NHS provides a minimum standard level of healthcare to all it's residents.
In the UK people are less aware there is an associated cost to medical care
The more you earn the more you pay.
In the US you are required to pay for your medical care via self funding or insurance funding.
We pay less for healthcare here in the US than we did in the UK.
We pay around $200 a month via our employer for our health insurance.
If you self insure this could be $500 per month with larger deductibles.
You need to be aware of the total cost of your healthcare plan:
Premium - usually subsidized by your employer
Deductibles
Out of pocket maximums
Co-pays
Co Insurances
Two plan options:
HMO - Health maintenance Organization plan
PPO- Preferred Provider Organization
According to 2019 statistics 10% of people in the US do not have medical insurance. Medicare and Medicaid are government/tax funded programs that aim to help with this.
